Both Modern Horizons sets were real headaches, but the fact the wotc is banning stuff before MH3 releases in a few months makes it seem like they're worried that Modern is too powerful for the new cards to see any play!

wizards banned Violent Outburst because they're going to print a 1 or 2 mana cascade spell in MH3 and needed to make sure it wouldn't break the meta too hard.

It certainly appears that way! Yawgmoth really struggled against Footfalls, so with outburst banned, Yawgmoth does seem really threatening!

I like that every deck that leans into the Evoke Elementals is just tagged as a "scam" deck. Thank you, WotC, for printing more free spells to "fix" a format that wasn't broken to begin with.

I've been playing Dimir scam for a while now and I truly appreciate when other people do too! My list is a little bit more on the controlling side with Tishana's Tidebinders but the real kicker is a set of Essence Flux. You essentialy have a way of scamming your evoke elementals that dodges graveyard hate! The Lazav tech is super spicy though

Etrata does seem really cool for an Assassin deck! Etrata, Deadly Fugitive {1}{U}{B} Legendary Creature - Vampire Assassin Deathtouch Face-down creatures you control have “{2}{U}{B}: Turn this creature face up. If you can’t, exile it, then you may cast the exiled card without paying its mana cost.” Whenever an Assassin you control deals combat damage to an opponent, cloak the top card of that player’s library. 1/4

Damnation could work! Although, it does hit our creatures as well. But in the go wide matchups, being able to wipe like mama showed me how would be fabuloso! Damnation {2}{B}{B} Sorcery Destroy all creatures. They can’t be regenerated.

Yo! Got a deck idea for you. New set has a card called Hell to Pay, which is basically Disintegrate but gives you tapped treasure tokens if you deal excess damage. Amulet of Vigor would let you use them immediately, Imodane the Pyrohammer lets you do that same damage to each opponent, and Contraband Kingpin gives you lots of scry triggers. You'd ramp by zapping your own creatures and digging for more value and snowball. Also your channel is big enough to have the Community tab on YT - you can make threads and such over there if you really wanted to

Urza also comes to mind, in which case you could do Amulet and abuse ETB triggers to get large amounts of mana and combo off, or just have a lot of mana rocks after the fact. The other builds seems to be ETB/sac abuse... other miscellaneous cards like Exuberant Fuseling are also interesting, but you have a better sense of what works and what doesnt.

I wonder if rhinos wouldn't be better off playing leyline of anticipation over ardent plea as a replacement for violent outburst. It would lack second cascade spell, but it would enable instant speed play again

I feel like if you're committing to Lazav, you might want a few Trolls in the mana base. Tapped lands seem pretty rough though, so maybe that's just not viable.

Troll of Khazad-dûm would be pretty sick!! {5}{B} Creature - Troll Troll of Khazad-dûm can’t be blocked except by three or more creatures.

Reasonable Doube could be interesting! Although, our suspected creature would not be able to block! Reasonable Doubt {1}{U} Instant Counter target spell unless its controller pays {2}. Suspect up to one target creature. (A suspected creature has menace and can’t block.)

@ForeverLaxx I don't disagree, but there is some merit to testing it. It could allow you to push that last bit of damage through.

@@JuanWonOne In a heavy creature deck, that could make some bit of sense, but if you're running counterspells and need those counters to hit, a Pay 3 is more reliable than a Pay 2. Since he's running Grief and Thoughtseize, I'd almost use Remand over either of those though. It replaces itself and he can just discard the returned spell if he needs to.

Psychic Frog will certainly be an interesting card when MH3 comes out this summer! Psychic Frog {U}{B} Creature - Frog Whenever Psychic Frog deals combat damage to a player or planeswalker, draw a card. Discard a card: Put a +1/+1 counter on Psychic Frog. Exile three cards from your graveyard: Psychic Frog gains flying until end of turn.

Good question! We need both double blue and double black by turn 2 for Dauthi and Counterspell, and having to shock on both turn 1 and 2 would be a major blow to our life total!

The ban only killed Living end. Didn't do shit to the Temur version of Footfalls, which is still not the reason why modern is shit presently. Free spells are the reason why. Specifically the incarnations.

Modern was a lot nicer before MH2 free spell mucked everything up! We'll have to wait and see about rhinos! It's winrate before the ban was a bit iffy, about 48% at the last big Modern event!

Decks that can run a lot of wrath effects seem really good right now, considering the dominance of these ultra greedy creature strategies

I dunno that the conventional strategy of wraths and counterspells is even good anymore. Most creatures nowadays just give you a whole card of advantage on etb, so board wipes get worse 😢 Gone are the days of needing to get to your next turn for your 2/3-drop to have an impact.
