Sometimes I wonder what would’ve happened to the magical girl genre post 2011 had Madoka Magica never come out. Tokyo Mew Mew New was more viewed more and received better (I’m pretty sure) than this, so hopefully we can go back to more lighthearted series soon, because I feel like the series inspired by it have only gotten worse which time.

Yeah like Mermaid Melody! That was a cute anime too with fun songs, action and interresting villains. It's one of my favorite magical girl with Card captor Sakura and Tokyo mew mew. Thoses classics are unforgivable and so enjoyable 🥰

Thank you friend. I mostly wanted to see if I was just going crazy because I kept seeing people talk about it like it's the coolest thing ever and I had dropped it after like, two and a half episodes before forcing myself through it.

Since the creator is a punk, he is pretty much saying that capitalism is choking holding people from being their true selves or their best potentials. I am also pretty sure he's neurodivergent and since older Japanese culture still does not view "otaku" as normal people, even if it is more out in the open, that's the point he's getting at. Overall, I enjoyed the surrealism of the story but it did feel like a first draft script and not a finalized thought out plot.

I remember when I heard about it. It is said to be multimedia project. And even saw a mobile game with them. I don't remember clearly. But I played or saw the gameplay of that mobile game too. And ughh... The graphics are mid. The worst are the areas and despite you can pick gender for your empty otaku leader. It's just about girls fighting while you stay in the back. Probably an IDLE game. Which I hate. I was curious about the series but wasn't hyped because being edgy. Also... The otaku thing being in the front than the MG aspect. And as you reviewed it with your pure rage. If I watched it I think I would feel the same. I'm so freaking tired of sexualization of women. It definitely shows there's no shoujo anime nowadays much. Mostly just having ecchi shots, beach episodes, harem and all just about men. And despite romance being a thing. I don't like that genre.

I did see some things about a mobile game while looking things up for this, but didn't look too much into it. It was kind of cool looking but I mean. After the show I wasn't really gonna get my hopes up.

After rewatching this review again, a lot of what people said about Magical Destroyers feels identical to what people are saying now about Gushing Over Magical Girls, right down to it being the first “real magical girl anime since Madoka came out”. Honestly, I’d love to see your thoughts on it since I’ve honestly seen very little criticism on the characters and writing, but tons of people saying the writing is decent, or even good for an ecchi, that it’s actually a love letter to the magical girl genre, and that it’s a brilliant exploration of sexuality. It’d be cool to see your thoughts on it.

Anyone who says MahoAko is "the first real magical girl since Madoka" is just willfully ignorant holy shit. I would actually fight someone over that IRL hand to hand. I do have my thoughts on MahoAko and I do want to share them some day. I'm just not good at putting anything out in a timely manner xOx But my opinion boils down to it's a stupid horny series that is, UNFORTUNATELY, very funny on occasion with strangely charming characters. It doesn't need to be the all star magical girl series or whatever. It really isn't. But it's also fine to just let it exist. Is the sexualization weird as fuck? Absolutely and that should be pointed out. But it is a guilty pleasure of mine, and there are some enjoyable aspects to it if you're able to stomach. The rest of it. Unfortunately, most of the people talking about it are so internet poisoned that they honestly think it's a good example of a magical girl series.

@@CakeoftheMews Personally, without any interaction to any other anime fans, I wouldn’t like the series, but I wouldn’t hate it that much. I’d just see it as yet another big, controversial ecchi series like Redo of Healer and Interspecies Reviewers were when they came out and move on. But it’s the general reaction from the anime community that kind of pushes it over the edge and makes me despise this series. I’ve heard a bunch of horrible takes like the aforementioned “it’s a love letter to the magical girl genre” and “it’s the first real magical girl anime since Madoka” and that Utena’s just a silly little misunderstood bean who has done nothing wrong, and that Tres Magia actually deserves everything that’s happened to them. As well as treating Utena as the strongest magical girl ever and saying that she could assault every other magical girl if she ever fought them and looking too deep into the writing to say that it’s actually supposed to be some sort of metaphor for sexual liberation vs conformity and other outrageous things like that.
