Welcome to my introduction to Raymond E Feist's Riftwar Saga.
This is a pitch for this series to help you decide if you want to read it. It is a bit of a stereotypical fantasy, but it's a whole lot of fun.
I explain where all the 30 books fit it regards to each other. Which are the best books, and which you could possibly...skip?

Thank you so much for the kind shoutout! ❤ Wow, I had no idea there wer that many books in this series, and it’s impressive that Feist could vary his plot so well. Hooray for no gatekeeping!

I always get so happy when I see another upload from you! You have such infectious enthusiasm, it always makes me super excited to read. I was wondering if you might ever do some videos on stand-alone fantasies? As much as I love series, it’s nice to have a one and done story sometimes. Love from Canada !!

Thank you! I'm happy to hear my enthusiasm is infectious, that is literally my goal! :D I'll keep the stand-alone books in mind for videos. It's a good suggestion! I just do series cause I have so many books I want to cover, and this helps me be different to other youtubers and stand out that way. But there are some fantastic stand alones that don't quite fit my current format! It's worth considering.

Regarding fantasy and "D&D" tropes, Midkemia was actually the homebrew D&D world that Feist and his friends built while playing TTRPGs in college, and at a time when there really weren't any published, fully-fleshed-out game worlds to begin with. So yeah, there was no real way this wasn't going to happen. But considering that Magician came out when I was in 7th grade and absolutely obsessed with D&D, it was exactly what I wanted at the time and still holds a special place in my heart all these years later.

I reread the first book recently, having been quite impressed with it when I was younger. Wasn't quite so taken with it now but it is pretty fun and I could see myself reading more of it. Probably not 29 books more, though.

The Empire Trilogy is a must read! I believe it is all Wurts in Feist’s created world. I tell people to read Daughter of the Empire first, then the Magician then continue Empire. Silverthorn was ok and I thought Sethanon was a hot mess, to be skipped as it will sour you not to read on. Check out Kit’s World review of Empire, it is so funny and delightful.

Am 5 times round reading all 30....6 times on Audible. Midkemia is soooooo my safe space. and Jimmy the Hand is such a great character that clearly he couldnt let him go - i am happy about this. But Jimmy's son Arutha was at least not a chip off the old block! And i cry every time Jimmy dies, Nakor dies (even though i know he is coming backish) Tomas dies. I think i am just way too invested

As a Feist fan I have read all the books multiple times and still enjoy them. You did leave off a couple of books, there is the stand alone Faerie Tale which is a supernatural thriller set in America, and the new Firemane trilogy which introduces a whole a new world (and has another female lead character).

I was 14 when The Serpentwar books ended, definitely perfect for teen boys. I didn’t follow through much past that era, moving on to other authors. The simplicity and the tropes really give a good baseline for appreciating other authors and series. When I returned for a re-read in my thirties to finish the series, I did find some enjoyable gems. Talon is a great spin on a Count of Monte Christo type story, but with magic. Overall super fun.

I love the riftwar cycle. It was the first fantasy series I read that I truly loved. I agree with a lot of the criticisms too, but I can’t help but have a soft spot for the series. Side note, after reading a ton of Sanderson last year, I had a yearning for some classic fantasy. I narrowed it down to a re-read of feist or a first time read of Shannara books by Terry Brooks. I had seen the Shannara books on many a shelf in my youth but I was too busy with feist. In the end I chose Shannara and found a lot of similarities between the series. I’d say that if anybody like Feist they should really take a look at Brooks as well and vice versa.

Brooks and Feist were the first two fantasy authors I ever read as a Jr high school student. Reading them again during the pandemic lockdowns, I definitely feel like Brooks borrowed so heavily from Tolkien that some points feel like a rip off but I still enjoyed them for the most part. I liked rereading the early Feist novels a bit more, especially A Darkness At Sethanon and The King's Buccaneer.

Honestly, I love the tropes of this series. It's refreshing to have something that isn't just plot twists or overly complicated characters for no reason other than to be different. I love the traditional male and female roles. You can have loads of other book series that are progressive in their ideas, but it's quite refreshing to have a baseline fantasy series. Even though there is a strong female character who has an entire trilogy about her, it's not enough for some, which is why progressives always go too far with moving the goalposts. Raymond is a legend for creating a very tropey, massive high fantasy world that others will enjoy for the rest of time since he actually finished it.

I still feel burned from those last 3-4 books to be honest. It just felt like he either stopped caring or had gotten a ghostwriter in, and the 'big final twist' was literally staring them in the face several books earlier in a piece of 'foreshadowing' so bad it just made them all look incredibly stupid for not figuring it out earlier. I read this series over about 20 years, and because of how poorly I felt the ending had been handled, I haven't even felt tempted to go back and reread my favourites sections even once since.

I remember as a young kid, I stumbled upon the Exile's return by accident in a family member's book shop in Sicily. Got hooked on the book but unfortunately they never translated all the books in italian. My dad is also a huge fan of the conclave of shadows trilogy which was translated but is sad that the rest of the books aren't. It would be cool if they started translating the whole saga but alas it's probably never going to happen. I will be finishing the entire series though and then narrating it to him, god willing hahah

There is a book before Magician. Its called Magician Apprentice. Unless of course in a later edition they combined them. I read this first "trilogy" ( it was originally 4 books) as he wrote them. I met him while he was writing Darkness at Sethanon

The best was the Empire series hands down. Also the part when our guy builds up his business is pretty good not to mention it’s used in a good way. Not everything has to be restricted to weapons. Money is important (in reality). If this series would keep the level of the empire part? Feist would be now really on the level of Martin and others.

I read these books starting in middle school and ending whenever the last one came out. I would say that everything from Magician to the end of the Demonwar Saga was pretty good, although looking back, a lot of the cooler moments in those novels seem somewhat cliched now.

Have you read any Juliet Marrilier? She writes beautiful epic fantasy that span decades. The world building is so good and the magic system is unique imo. I really enjoyed the SevenWaters series and have a soft spot for it as it’s the first book of this author I picked up so it’ll always have a special place in my heart. The books remind me of the Fools Apprentice books, so give it a go if you haven’t already. Thanks for introducing me to new fantasy reads 🙏❤️

I agree that the Empire series is the best part, although I'll admit I never read many of the "3rd era" series. Actually for me, Empire is one of the best fantasy series out there, I absolutely loved it. I think most Feist/Wurts fans will agree that Empire is right up there in rankings.

These days, everyone wants to subvert expectations. Sometimes, it's nice to actually have the clichés. I like stories about wizards doing wizard shit, and Feist delivers in that regard. That being said, I read the final books out of a sense of obligation and a desire for closure more than actual enjoyment and was ultimately left somewhat disappointed when I got to the end and realised that it hadn't actually been building to anything.

Read Magician a few years back and found it charming enough to continue on with the next few books in the series. However, after ADaS I became seriously disillusioned, and summarily 'jumped off the bus' so to speak. I recently acquired the Empire trilogy and will give it a go based on all the positive reviews and my experience with having read some of The Wars of Light and Shadow series by Janny Wurts. (Janny is an incredible writer btw, and unfortunately very much under the radar for many modern readers of fantasy. Something that most certainly should be rectified.)

This series was pitched to me on a bus ride home from college years ago and for the life of me i couldn't remember what the series was called or who the author was and now I'm 99% certain this is the series. Depending on how i feel about Wurts' work (cuz i already have 5 of her solo books) i might check out her collaboration with Feist and decide from there in regards to RiftWar. I recently started Wurts' To Ride Hell's Chasm and omg the prose is lovely. Futurama ❤ While The Golden Age of The Simpsons is magnificent, as a show I've always preferred Futurama. Plus, i don't remember the Simpsons making me cry. Multiple times.

Weird question but do you by chance know the band Cymbiance? My dad is in a metal band by that name (haha that sounds childish - im a grown man now😂) here in the states that started around 20ish years ago and picked up a big following in Australia. They split for a while but got back together a couple of years ago and are releasing a new album soon. Like I said, weird but you strike me as someone who listens to metal. In my head: Metal+Australia=Cymbiance 😂

Started these in highbschool when Magician came out as one book and made it to Conclave as the books dis start becoming repetitive. The only author Inhave probably read more of is Piers Anthony as youbvan read a Xanth in a week. I want to reread the first few just because sometimes I don't want to think too much. Unfortunately some wandered off. Am in Mistress of the Empire now. Inhad similar issues in Servant. If you want to go way back gaming, Kelewan is based on MAR Barker's Tekumel in the Empire of the Petal Throne game and Man of Gold - which is a lot less feudal Japan. I did read Amber a long time ago but had to buy that omnibus edition to read at some point

Great question! Magician was written as one book. However it was split it into two parts for the US markets. Everywhere else in the world, it's released as one book. I think it's important to consider it as one book because the story is VERY unresolved by the end of 'apprentice'.

I highly disagree that 5 and 6 are important. I feel like trauma was moreso the norm in the middle ages which this appears to be based so each trauma would have a lessen effect than if we went through it a secondly I don't think it would make a good read. A good example of this is lockear losing gemli or whatever her name is he actually goes through some depression because he is young and not as use to loss so feist shows this to show they are not free from emotions. He does not go hard into Thomas "ashensugar" gaining emotions either because it is not that important to analyze emotion, it's important the nature of this valharu is changing. This being said 4 and 5 are almost the same criticism Where this book might have sexism within the pages, I don't think that makes an author sexist. It like the previous topic would be a norm in the middle ages, so makes sense for it to be included in the book, that's when they met up with guy at amorgana everybody was surprised that a woman could be a leader cause that's the age this was based in, it relates it to our history. I'm not a fan of stories based in the future, because it feels way more separate from reality, as I picture this as a medieval time period it makes sense for these things to happen, at least in the human world. I feel like the destruction of talon of the silver hawk's village and surrounding villages is just as racist as these are sexist (in terms to the writer not the actions of the characters), which is none it is just the time period. Like when everybody was talking about Rowling undertones in books I thought it was ridiculous, throught the story her main characters maybe not ron were moral on these fronts. Just like I feel like feust main characters are moral, there are some times not such the character being young, for the greater good (let's take guy and athura the later being willing to kill martin and recognizing this character flaw, just like Dumbledore understands he is using a child for the greater good). And to expand on this the story is made more believable by using fantasy tropes for things that are already unbelievable. So 1,5,6 and not good points, and fuck it I sure as shit don't care how well it's written, as you can probably tell from all my English mistakes
