Thanks David, a diamond mine of an upload literally littered with Gems. "Propless Mentalism" is possibly the highest road our passion for "Magic" can take. It ain't easy but it is spectacularly rewarding. Passion, perseverance and real-world practice are essential. Never forget the Master has failed gracefully more times than the Pupil has tried. And if it ever got easy, everybody would be doing it. Love and respect.

Great recommendations to get a SOLID base for your magic library in regards to propless mentalism. I whole heartedly agree with you in saying that just because there are no props doesn’t mean that propless mentalism will be easy. There are a host of things that can and do make this avenue of magic much more difficult, but also much more rewarding. Thank you!

Jermay's Mind DVD has a deep dive on 'touching on Hoy' and an entire DVD devoted just to cold (and hot) reading. It is brilliant brilliant stuff. A beautiful propless pulse stop is available in Docc Hilford's 'the vault' DVD set. He adds a cut and healing of his finger, but that can be omitted. Luke Jermay also has some work on this idea that he released in a lecture DVD, though it is not as clear and concise as some other teachings / explanations. But he does take it to a ballsy extreme that makes it very much his own. Marc Spelmann put out the DVD 'what am I thinking' which is about impromptu- if not all propless- mentalism. 9 effects And Jon Thompson's 'naked mentalism' has some real gems in it too.

4:37 in and he still hasn’t started. And propless is not hard it’s actually fun. But I started as a stage hypnotist and been a child stage actor where we did a lot of adlib and in my work as a consultant (special effects, visual effects, engineering), I am called in to do something nobody has before and you have to sell the illusions as if you can solve their problem; fake it till you make it. Playing with equivoque’s is great fun. But also cold reading is great fun. And if you have a pen and paper, you can do things like draw me a tree. Oh and indeed unlocking a cell phone - I don’t consider it propless. I do this with colleagues in IT, I talk about how certificates and keys and public keys work. And I explain the easiest way with a shared key, that both the sender and receiver know. Which is highly secure when you managed to physically hand over the key and store it properly. And basically what it does is take your valuable info, like… oh hang on let me demonstrate. Give me your phone and open the calculator app. Now type a random digit. Imagine this is the shared key. Now multiply that with your Lock Screen key. Okay and show that to me…. Right! That’s now encoded. Clear the number on the calculator and hand it to me. Oh can you lock it please? Now I saw that big number, and I know your cipher was a simple addition. So in order to know the Lock Screen I’d need to subtract it! The maths is basically done in reverse and ciphers don’t use multiplication as such but but shift left and divide is shift right and xor. So I don’t know with what to divide it right. Because you didn’t give me the shared key. What was the shared key…. You forgot… didn’t I tell to remember? I’d they do remember I play it as a polymath trick and do quick division. And either way I unlock their phone. And I explain that you need to guard your shared key with your life. Because I can eavesdrop into your device, I can have cameras recording it or snoop your emails or texts. And I did this lecture for the bank 3 times and it blows people away. And the whole method is trivial. I just press the = on the calculator and with many calculators you’ll get the last entered digit. The Apple calculator does that.

FWIW, I seem to remember the Kickstarter for How to Control Minds as indicating it was suitable for beginners. I sort of doubted that, but I backed it anyway because I was interested in learning more about how this worked. I figured that even if I could do the effects, I'd learn some interesting stuff about how people think and such. I haven't watched much of the content yet, but from what I did see, I think I'm with you that the effects aren't as beginner-friendly as they may have advertised.

Great review and perfect timing as I've been researching propless effects in the past couple of months. While I was looking into Tequila Hustler on Michael Murray's website I came across The Trojan Project by Manos Kartsakis and Michael Murray. Propless in the sense that you can borrow the bill, the coin and the key - and it's a great expansion of the "Which Hand" effect. You can even try the pseudo-effect on yourself before the method is explained. I love Which Hand effects, and I think it's good to have two or three completely different methods so if you are asked to repeat, even if it's days later, you have another option or two in your arsenal to keep things fresh.

One of my favorites is he shares a method on how to guess a name by having your spectator think of three important people in their life. And you instruct them to imagine each of them standing in front of them you then have them choose which person whether it be on their left middle right etc and focus on that person and their relationship first. Like if this is a friend or a relative etc would you then reveal their relationship and then the name. Pretty awesome stuff. That's in state of mind the gray area I love his take on a liar to tell a routine and using that method to do a witch hand. And he ends it with a three person three different objects and you're able to deduce which person is holding which object super clean super direct no logic puzzles or gimmicks or anything like that.

@@magicorthodoxy Oh, cool. I guess that part kinda flew by me. Something I think about w/ propless Mentalism, something I kinda see as a issue, is that a lot of propless material puts a lot of responsibility in the hands of the spectator. If a person has to spell a word in their head, do math (groan 😒) or follow too many instructions, they could easily ruin it. And we, as the mentalist, can’t blame them for it. We have to own it or fall back on something else. Also, I just thought about Pulse Stops. There’s a couple great ones out there AND they would be great mentalism for deaf spectators.

The other brothers put out a which hand effect where you ask them questions and then depending on the answer they switch hands. They show it with an actual coin but you can also do this conpleatly propless and ask them to imagine it. Hopefully they're a truthful person lol

The problem with most mentalism is that performers drag it out far too long. Spectators are enjoying it and as it continues they lose interest and just want it to be over

For propless mentalism only? Or in general? Propless mentalism probably requires both “detective” work and keeping them entertained at the same time. It’s probably harder than it looks.
