When you are shooting, the bullets are gonna fly both ways. If you plan on shooting thousands of bullets, dont expect to survive it. Avoid combat at all costs. Do you really expect to kill hundreds of people with your thousands of rounds? You expect to outwit and outmaneuver that many people? Huh.
@graywind43263 жыл бұрын
A combat load out x3. Plus some for training. Put all the ammo in magazines for the rifle if possible. You are not going to survive many firefights. Handguns 200. Shotguns 100. Good luck. You get hit during shtf your probably a deadman. The problem is SHTF can be anything. If your first getting tooled up now, your skill level is probably low. Keep it simple. Avoid confrontation. Fmj is fine for shtf.
@ETuss7133 жыл бұрын
Most people are better off getting a gym membership, food and water, and most importantly training. Avoid gunfights.
@caseyoleary20103 жыл бұрын
Simple answer: the 'absolute' bare minimum is whatever amount YOU can reasonably carry on YOUR person and still remain mobile/comfortable/effective in YOUR version of SHTF. Some people expect to get into prolonged close-range gun battles (these people watch too many movies). Some people expect to bug-in and lay low as long as possible, only needing to 'defend the castle'. While others may plan to become part of a wider pre-planned network of people and will fulfill a specific role within that network. Point is: plan for your own unique set of priorities/circumstances/abilities. Personally, I only carry 50 rounds (2-20 round mags and 1-10 round) for my already heavy M1A and 30 rounds (2-15 round mags) for my backup SIG 365XL. When factoring in the rest of my load-out such as: armor, first aid gear, comms./nav. equipment, food/water, basic survival gear, etc. it just starts to get too heavy. My SHTF scenario planning involves operating in more of a scout/recon capacity and never being more than an over-night hike away from my home. The key to this plan is having enough ammo on-hand at home to reload each of my mags at least twice.
@nathanlewis56823 жыл бұрын
I like the 7.62x51. It's bigger and heavier and it puts a bigger smack down compared to 5.56. I'm not dissing 5.56. It is accurate using a 20 inch barrel 1:8 twist and 62 grain freedom seeds.
@ryanwilson59363 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I remember when “Sons of Guns” was on tv years ago and shortly before the show was canceled they did a SHTF scenario. Two guys had full range of whatever they wanted to choose. One guy picked 5.56 and another chose .22lr. Other than range, the .22lr beat out the 5.56 in every challenge. Most challenges being storing, transporting, and ammo count/weight. I think the ammo ratio was something along the lines of 200-300 5.56 to the .22lrs thousands of rounds before weight became an issue. Personally, I would have chose .17hmr though.

By the time that I'd seen that, I had already exceeded that amount of ammo (January 2020). I'm still buying .308 because I just bought that new bolt-action rifle, but am set for 5.56, .22 LR, and 9mm.

Thanks for the great breakdown. I agree completely as a minimum. Couple of things. Like that you cleared the ak after dropping the mag. Good example of handling for newbies and a reminder to those of us who are experienced. Always adhere to safety. Also like that you mentioned mag count along with round count. 1000 rounds and 1 mag is not going to cut it. 300 rounds and 6 mags is better. I have the same philosophy regarding mags. Minimum 6. Buy a new tool and buy extra mags. Sometimes things break. For new people, that is great advice. Those of us that are more experienced hopefully are better set. My load out is very different than yours, but we have the same concept. My bug out setup is 500 pistol in the go bag with 5 extra mags. Also 15 extra mags, totaling out at 1000 rounds for the carbine. Gets into a weight management issue if you are a smaller person like my wife, but her load out does not duplicate some gear I have, so is lighter (trenching shovel, fire starting and cooking equipment, etc). While she gets the med kit extra, I get the shoulder mag bag extra. Her total load out minus pistol and rifle is 30lbs and mine is 48lbs. Plus firearms. That is for 2 pistol and 2 carbine for 2 people. And as you also said, practice with it. Again thank you for the comprehensive breakdown, even so far as platform and caliber.

My ammo numbers are pretty close to your “bare minimum.” I think it’s up to each individual how much ammo they store or the number of magazines they have. That being said, I remember reading a book by Bruce Clayton called “Life After Doomsday”....great book with lots of valuable information for today’s prepper’s. I read a statement in the book by a man named Will Brownell, I think, who said, (and I’m paraphrasing) that anyone who expects to survive long enough to use all the thousands of rounds of ammo they may have stored against a determined force of “invaders” or “predators” who want what you have, is either a fool or an eternal optimist! I think that is true, unless you happen to be part of a fairly large group of like preppers who are well armed and supplied. A lone prepper and/or a family realistically has no chance. I would rather store a reasonable amount of ammo and mags and be able to use all or most of it in the above scenario, than allow the bad guys to get their hands on what’s left of my thousands of rounds I stored and use that ammo against other Americans struggling to survive the SHTF situation. Just my thoughts...don’t mean to offend anyone with my comments. Good video Magic Prepper! Keep them coming! Thanks!

The minimum ammo and magazine amount should always get bigger as time goes on. With the way things are a good minimum set up should be a defensive pistol with 4-6 mags and a defensive rifle like an ar15 or ak with a standard load out of 6 mags plus one in the gun. Never let it fall below those numbers and always have ammo for those mags.

Eleventy-billion rounds!!! Actually you're highly unlikely to have the need for more than 20 or 30, even if things go full on mad max, the goal is to avoid firefights. And if ya get through 20 or 30 without dying then someone also "brought" you more guns and ammo when they brought the fight. That said 200 is a better place to be, 500 is probably better than that, 1000... You see where I'm going with this.

Those who avoid fighting, will starve. Those who fight, and are good at it, will get all the resources. Those who are too stationary, or whom are too aggressive will also perish. It will take a balance of stealth, ferociousness, and evasiveness to survive. Strike light lightning, move like a tornado, hide like the wind. Now, the good news: most people are ill-equipped, untrained and just straight no good for what's coming. This makes them relatively uncompetitive. If you have multiple barrels, many cans of ammo and lots of CQB and urban combat practice, you will likely steamroll anyone in your way, except maybe rogue military elements. There may be weeks of calm before the storm. Day 1 of empty shelves will probably not be day 1 of combat, just as it hasn't been for many other disasters, like the first in California. But, weeks of neglect will have changed people's attitudes and you will find that you can't hide. Starving people have an astounding sense of smell. If you've ever fasted, you'll know what I mean. All five senses become incredibly sharp.

Alternative Considerations: How prepared are you in all supply areas? Where are you located? This will have a tremendous bearing on the ammo requirement. If prepared with water, food, and other provisions, then ammo would basically be for defense. Would acquiring beasts from the squirrel to a large deer be one’s direction? Take into consideration the maturity, size, and capability of an individual. Would there be a possible barter situation… we must have sleep, someone to alternate the watch. And other reasons will have a bearing for the amount to “stack”.

SHTF: I dedicate one 30 cal ammo can for this purpose. In a SHTF event, the weapon platform I'd choose is my 9mm EDC pistol/carbine combination that use the same magazines, along with a shotgun w/ various loads. Plan is to carry a pistol (holstered), a carbine (slung/carried) and shotgun (slung to rucksack) and one fully stocked ammo can. My belt carry is two magazines and folding knife. This gives me four interchangeable magazines with a ammo can full of various rounds: FMJ / HPs / etc. Rucksack contains the rest of gear to survive in the field for a week.

I mentioned I had a shotgun and a 40 cal Glock. My wife asked how many rounds of ammo I had for the Glock. “I’ve got 150”. My wife had been hearing ever-increasing opinions on the number of rounds essential for the preservation of life and property except from this one career Full Bird Colonel Army Officer who had been mostly quiet during the oneupmanship. I know he had fought in the Battle of Mogadishu - probably in Delta Force. So when my wife asked me if we shouldn’t have more than 150 rounds of 40 SW and I told her I wouldn’t last 150 rounds the Colonel gave me a small grin and a nod. That said it all.

This is a great video to show new owners and new preppers that it's attainable to be able to prepare for SHTF without spending a ton or feeling entirely insane. SHTF isn't always a social unrest or zombie apocalypse. It can be as simple as some crackhead breaking into your house for drug money. Plus, if you're able to successfully use the first 100 rounds or so, I'd assume you'll probably be able to get your hands on someone else's ammo at that point. Depends on what S hits your fan, how long it hits, and what your looking for afterwards. For game getting in a rural area, at least 500rnds of 22, 200rnds of small shot for 20 or 12ga, and 50 rnds of big game rifle or slugs per year you plan to forage (plus fishing hooks, nets, rat traps, snare wire and air gun pellets). What I've been telling newbies is enough mags for 120 rounds per defensive rifle (200 is better), and for pistols least three mags or enough mags for 40 rounds whichever is greater (60 is better). Enough ammo to fill all of these three times (goal is five, but three works), plus 50 rounds to zero and familiarize, and try to get a second set of mags. It isnt enough to really train with, but you can dry fire and do stopage training with snap caps, and when it really gets bad you won't outlive that probably. Shotguns, get buckshot when you can find it, but I consider the defensive shotgun to be something you don't go past the mailbox with. I'm glad I was able to score 60 3.5" buckshot for my 535. Sure, 3+1, but with a imp mod choke tube and 54 pellets of #4 Buck, if anyone needs a second dose I screwed up.

Don't forget that there are some types/brands of magazines you need to stock up on. .......... Then, determine which ammo is best for the application. .......... What you have in your hand will be all you have in making the difference in your survival, so the best is your goal. .......... "If" you are lucky enough to survive a go around, you will need to depend on your own stockpile and not others. .......... Let's just say your choice is the "dreaded" black one. Authentic P-Mags tended to function well in some desert conditions or you may like good brand name metal with green followers in other applications. .......... Buy the correct ammo for the barrel and length. Maybe your best all around ammo would be Military M855 if correct barrel twist, hopefully still sealed in it's cans. .......... In the 7.62x51, if you could find the fabulous Hirtenberger from the past. .......... There is still popping up the 1970's 7.62x39 from Norinco although rare, plus I wouldn't want to be behind that target's solid wall. These mentioned would be what you want to horde away. .......... 33 Mags on hand and ready, but not carried all at once. That's 990 rounds ready to slam in, out of the other 2010 still stored in cans. .......... For target plinking and ammo blowing away, use the cheap Tula, Armscor and the likes to be wasted if it will feed good enough. .......... Sighting in your main battle rifle and keeping it in check from time to time alone, will take a fair amount of ammo. Add to that a very scant training at least every month which will burn up more. An actual fire fight should be avoided as much as possible in SHTF. It would be foolish to go looking for a fight unless you were in an actual declared war and needed to jump in a battle risking it all for the main cause. As we are closer to WoRoL the minimum is 7 Mags. That is one load out for any centerfire rifle cartridge. If you get in a gun fight, how long are you really going to last? If you win a gun fight you will become an owner of the other's gun, and present ammo. While someone like my old friend Yosi, who lived on a compound in the West Bank, bought a min of 10K rounds per weapon, he was expecting the hoards to come to him, and was not expecting incoming mortar rounds. How much can you carry? How much food then can you carry? Then how much water can you carry on top of that? What are the odds of you having to abandon your stash or seeing it set ablaze by the marauding hoards? All of these things have value, but what is unfortunate is all of the stored up 556223 ammo that people have for a round that is very limited in their new shorty AR, where a newer round will do far more in a far more compact package. If you have that stuff, change calibers on your dedicated, and practice away the stash. Think flexibility in plan. Think Overmatch in your equipment specification.

10,000 per rifle, 5000 per handgun, 10,000 per shotgun (5000 hunting and 5000 defense loads) that’s a very conservative estimate. Stashed at multiple locations. That way if one of my group shows up and needs ammo during SHTF, we can do some bartering. It helps when acquiring ammunition to pool your money together with friends, family or members of your group. You’ll get a lot more that way by splitting up the cost. It will add up eventually. Once that goal is reached keep track of the amount of each caliber/gauge and replenish when necessary to maintain the amount. Bare minimum SHTF combat load out depends on the situation, personal preference, physical condition (being able to carry heavy loads and still be effective) cause you won’t have an ammo dump during SHTF unless you make it. This isn’t for everyone, different strokes for different folks. This was based on pre pandemic ammo prices of course. Lmfao

Rookie. BARE minimum you need 1 Steel Barrel (50k rounds) per caliber, a 1000acre ranch, AND a backup mcNuke for shtf. Otherwise I wouldnt even bother. /s

10k rounds is conservative? You will shoot your barrel out before half your ammo is gone
@charleygreycat33523 жыл бұрын
There is no "magic" answer to that question. It is good practice to keep all your magazines loaded and put up for safe storage. You will also need ammo to train with. An old soldier once told me: "We shot thousands of rounds on the rifle and machinegun range, but rarely ran short of ammo in a fire-fight. When we did, we used our shovels, axes and e-tools in hand-to-hand combat." My rule of thumb is simple: Multiply the number of rounds of each caliber you shoot at the range per year X 3 for practice. Shoot your loaded mags first, then reload with fresh ammo. Be well.

Glad I stocked up before the crisis hit. Bought tons of it in 2017-2019. Things were going good and that is the best time to prepare.

Even back then we knew something was coming. The signs of a civilization collapse aren't subtle. People are just really dull and don't know something's coming, until it smacks them right on the nose, which, by then, it's too late.

My opinion 500 minimum but the goal should be at least 1K+ for personal and practice. Maybe enough to arm each family memeber or squad :D

5000 .22 300 shotgun Minimum 200 anything else. I have double that+. Ammo can be traded, the correct answer is always “more”. You can never be too young, too thin, too rich, or have too much ammo.

4 magazines per hand gun, 8 magazines per rifle + 1 or 2 high capacity magazines (73, 50, or 100) for home defense! There will also be ammo & magazines gleaned off the dead, that is assuming you are not the dead.

It depends on where you live. If you're in the city, you probably won't need much. You won't last very long. Suburbanites may need a little more, because they can hold out longer. Rural folks need more, because they will actually have something to defend. Lone defenders may not last very long, but groups and families will need enough to survive multiple attacks. We keep enough ammo for 8 people to encounter 8 firefights a month for 8 months, plus hunting ammo.
@johnnewbold46223 жыл бұрын
I agree with your sentiments but not necessarily for defense, for hunting game.
@billywalker92233 жыл бұрын
@@smokethirteen Most firefights don't last over ten minutes, or until one side figures out that it's a lost cause. If there is an imbalance in the number of adversaries, it could last longer. So figure 800 to 1000 rounds per group, or half a battle pack per person. If one person faces multiple perps, there is going to be some spray and pray, so a BP can go quickly. If people are in defensive positions and taking pot shots, they might not use a lot of ammo, but they should carry plenty. I hope we don't get to that point. Pray for peace, prepare for war.

@@johnnewbold4622 I'm just being theoretical. Of course I don't want ammo to be used for self defense, but nobody can rule it out in this day and age.
