Welcome to precise turntable speed! MagicQuartz is a microcontroller firmware for the accurate speed control of HiFi record players with AC motor. The highly configurable software can be used to implement a precision turntable speedbox or motor power supply.
This video is an introduction to the MagicQuartz project. We take a look at MagicQuartz' software features and an open source hardware implementation, the MagicQuartz TechDemo. We also look at some measurements and examine the causes of speed variations and speed drifts when playing vinyl records (mains frequency variations, needle friction, lubrication warm-up) and how MagicQuartz eliminates them. I also show you how to flash the firmware to a standard Arduino so you can start building your own MagicQuartz-based turntable motor controller right away.
MagicQuartz aims to perfect the playback speed of vinyl records. It is also a valuable tool for digitizing and archiving shellac records, since non-standard RPM speeds can be set easily.
