Welcome to precise turntable speed! MagicQuartz is a microcontroller firmware for the accurate speed control of HiFi record players with AC motor. The highly configurable software can be used to implement a precision turntable speedbox or motor power supply.
This video is an introduction to the MagicQuartz project. We take a look at MagicQuartz' software features and an open source hardware implementation, the MagicQuartz TechDemo. We also look at some measurements and examine the causes of speed variations and speed drifts when playing vinyl records (mains frequency variations, needle friction, lubrication warm-up) and how MagicQuartz eliminates them. I also show you how to flash the firmware to a standard Arduino so you can start building your own MagicQuartz-based turntable motor controller right away.
MagicQuartz aims to perfect the playback speed of vinyl records. It is also a valuable tool for digitizing and archiving shellac records, since non-standard RPM speeds can be set easily.

Very kööl!!! I am currently using SimpleFOC with excellent results and it's great to see more options for speed control of turntables! Well done and congrats.

Thanks, and thanks for mentioning SimpleFOC! That seems like a very nice option for direct drive turntables!

I watched your video today. I have a vintage Kenwood KP-9010 DD turntable with a dead control system and your MagicQuartz may save it!

Hi, this probably won't work as MagicQuartz only works with conventional AC motors, but your Kenwood uses a direct drive. I would definitely try to repair the original controller of the Kenwood, this beautiful device deserves it! Good luck!!!

Wow! New update after 13 years! If any hardware part is required, we'd love to sponsor related prototype services, covering custom PCBs, 3DP, CNC machining etc. (PCBWay zoey)

Great idea, especially to insulate the AC motor from a noisy VFD by a transformer. And a low power VFD too. But my association, vynil is something about oldstyle visual design. LED 7-segment voltmeter is offstyle, nixies freq meter is better. And LCD is like geek addition, can be covered while usage. Or even move to quality graphic OLED display to be universal. Mega2560 vs RP2040.

Absolutely right! But remember that this thing was designed to use readily available parts. Of course, everything can be replaced. An OLED display should work. The voltmeter could be replaced with an analog one, and maybe a tongue frequency meter would be fun too ... In a future version I would like to implement a completely "headless" automatic mode. Then you don't need a display at all. And yes, eventually the firmware will be migrated to another platform. The AVRs are already quite old and also getting more and more expensive ... Thanks for your feedback!

I am writing from Delhi, India. We have 230volts here. Is your product as shown in video is available for sale. If yes, please provide details. Thanks

Hi! It also works with 230V. Regarding availability: I do not sell anything at the moment. You'd have to build the device yourself. Everything is available and free. Please see my homepage for details (linked in the video description).

Hi!
