MagBox 24 Octa Pro Kit
This is the whole shebang for busy photographers. Get the maximum benefit out of your softbox with all three core MagBox system products plus one of each accessory and an awesome case that was custom-designed to keep it all organized.
Magmod MagBox Description:
- The MagBox 24 Octa Softbox -
The MagBox is a radically awesome softbox that does what traditional softboxes can't. Its innovative design, two unique diffusers and loads of smart features take all the hassle out of creating beautiful, soft light. Designed to work with speedlights or strobes, the MagBox offers the brightest light output on the market when combined with the FocusDiffuser, a unique grid/lens/diffuser all-in-one that's exclusive to the MagBox system.
Awesome. Because Magnets.
Magnets inside the base of the MagBox make attachment fast, strong and virtually silent. Even if you tilt your softbox at a deep angle or (for some reason) shoot inside a wind tunnel, the MagBox and the MagRing are staying put.
Want beautiful, soft light? Modify your softbox with the included Fabric Diffuser. For soft light plus control, add the optional MagBox 24 Octa FocusDiffuser, which acts like grid, diffuser and lens combined. Embedded magnets in both diffusers make attaching them to your MagBox fast and easy.
MagRing
The MagRing is a magnetic speedring that makes attaching larger modifiers like the MagBox to smaller hot-shoe flashes super simple. Attaching a speedlight or strobe to the MagRing takes literally 1 second-no special tools or locks required. off-camera in a jiff.
One Big, Happy System
We made the MagRing compatible with your existing MagMod modifiers. Throw on a MagGrid, MagGel or MagSphere without having to remove your flashes from the MagRing. Woo hoo!
A Dual Mount That Doesn't Suck
The MagRing makes it silly easy for you to mount two flashes at once, which is pretty dope for, say, overpowering the sun or doubling your flash recycle times. With two flashes in the MagRing, you've got double the power of a single flash-almost the same amount as a studio strobe-without actually having to lug one around.
Time-saving Convenience
The MagRing is so convenient that you're free to leave your mounted flash or flashes in it even when you don't need your softbox. No need to waste time ripping apart your whole set up just cause you wanna change locations and modifiers. Score!
Second Shooter Solution
Your assistant's flash can be in the same position as yours-no need for a second light stand junking up your limited workspace and slowing you down.
- MagShoe -
The MagShoe is a universal, ergonomic cold-shoe bracket you can operate with one hand. Just slide in your flash, turn the lock 90 degrees and you're good-to-go. It's a must-have for any photographer who wants to work faster, easier and awesome-er.
The MagShoe is literally everything you ever wanted from a coldshoe bracket. Engineered for security, speed, comfort and ease of use, the MagShoe solves all the issues you had with your old coldshoe.
Fast & Easy
Just slide in your flash and turn the lock 90 degrees. It's ready to go.
Adjust the angle of your light with one hand. Simply press the handy orange button to make quick, precise adjustments.
In one swift motion, the MagShoe's got your flash locked down tighter than Fort Knox. It won't come loose and it's not gonna wobble-even if you bump your stand. Bonus: ya know that crummy, obnoxious twisty lock on your flash? You'll never have to waste time with that thing ever again.
The MagShoe works with any flash, as long as you've got a MagGrip on it. (Yep, even the popular Godox AD200, thanks to the included 1/4-20 adapter). It's also the perfect tool for mounting LED light panels or even a microphone.
FocusDiffuser
The FocusDiffuser controls light like a grid, but also focuses it like a lens-all while keeping your light super soft. Use it to control soft light, limiting spill and increasing the effective output of your MagBox by up to 700%.
The FocusDiffuser is a multi-tasking, first-of-its kind innovation that actually increases the effective light output of your softbox-just like a Fresnel lens! It gives you the softness you'd expect with the control and precision of a grid, all while increasing the total light on your subject by up to 700% when compared to other competing softboxes.

May I suggest something? for those of us who use barebulb flashes like the AD200/Evolv 200 or monolights it would be really cool if there was a gel dome of some sort that could be attached to the gel holder of the MagBox :)

Really cool system! I just got the magmod professional kit it in to use on my Godox speedlight and AD200. I currently use a smaller glowpop softbox with a bowens mount and the barebulb of the ad200 and am very happy. A great and quick to set up system. I could easily see using this if I needed it but just don't need it. I'd be more interested in adding the round head to the AD200 you mentioned but have yet to get to your video on it. I will soon. I'm curious as to how it would change what I currently do.

I bought the MagBox during KickStarter but I didnt like the light coming from just using one AD200 with fresnel head. I then got Godox profoto adapter and using the bulb and Magmod's profoto adapter with MagBox. The light spill is much better now but I will be selling MagBox as I totally agree, it didnt improve on the speed of use.

The build quality is exceptional and for me it is faster since you don't need a separate grid. And yes it's more expensive -- not a great item for the budget shopper -- but you are getting what you're paying for. I totally understand the comment about not wanting to use this with a round head but there are speeding adapters, including one for Bowens, Profoto, etc. I haven't used any of these so can't comment on how well they work in general or with the gels in particular. I will point out one downside of the speedrings is that they accommodate one flash only, so you lose the ability to use two fresnel heads.

AD200 has a nice dual head option. You can the dual head ad200 ring, 2 36" softboxes for must less. Plus, a traditional softbox you can easily mount higher power pro strobes if you need to. Not sure who this appeals to. Its too expensive for hobbiest, too limiting for pros.

Great review! I don't understand how other manufacturers have not come up with a focus defuser material for their softboxes and reflectors like Magmod. That's the only reason I'm even considering Magmods expensive system. This could help with the power loss you get when using hss.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 5 жыл бұрын
Well, Magmod has been loud and proud regarding their advancements as well as their R&D / patent process, so it's possible they just got there first, and now anyone will have to pay up to utilize it (as they should). From what I gather, it's essentially micro-fresnel lenses, so it seems like one of those innovations that after it happens, you go "how did it take us so long to get here" (my favorite example of this being inverting the ketchup bottle). Magmod has a great track record of doing that. I'll always be a Magmod fan regardless of people's resistance to their pricing strictly because of how they are approaching gear with such a focus on disrupting the steps we take to control our lighting.

Thanks Robert, very insightful. Can you use two AD200's together with round heads? If not, I would think that with the popularity of the round head that Mag Mod is working on redesigning to accommodate it. Like the septic tank drop when discussing the case to carry all of your cr*p ;-)
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 5 жыл бұрын
Not in it's current fashion. The round head will be offset due to plastic that divides the two lights in the center of the magring. If that was gone, youd be able to mount one but I don't think two would fit across either, and even then the doors wouldn't close. Curious if they are attacking a single/double redesign to accommodate round as well. Thank you!

i like the idea and innovation they bring. but what still keeps me from just straight out purchasing this kit is, that you have to use small flashes with frenel heads, and nothing else. not the different heads of a AD200, not even the bare bulb, etc.

Did you try the colour correction gels. I tried using the full CTO and whether I set the K manually (I tried 3200) or I attempted to use a grey card, it still looked too orange. (I’m new to the Sony A7III, so maybe I was doing the second technique wrong). But using the Flashgels you reviewed on an AD200 Bulb worked well on my last camera
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 5 жыл бұрын
I've mentioned in previous videos I found Magmod gels to be too strong, that they tend to push 5800-6000K strobes down to 3000K. But, I often don't mind because very often tungsten lighting is around that temperature anyways.

Great review. Obviously, the Oct 24" was a strategic marketing approach. It's 24", it's enough for most jobs, it's fairly compact to carry around, but not so big that it makes for a hassle, but if you need something bigger, why not get another Oct 24"?. I think I get what they were trying to accomplish here, but I would like to see options...maybe like a 24", and a 30", just so if anyone wants something bigger, then maybe that can be an option. Overall great product, but the price can be a little hard to swallow when there are other great products out there too.

Glow EZ Lock is best bang for buck. Cheetahstand softboxes are good. I also like the Profond series if you're looking to get into big indirect modifiers. I do not share others enthusiasm for the Glow Parapop, or SMDV Speedbox, but those are quite popular as well.

The appeal of this system to me would be the ease of using CT gels, ie. set the camera to tungsten and use a CTO gel in the magbox. My problem is that I want to use my Badger Unleashed strobe which will fit on the Bowens mount speedring which you can buy as an extra. Just swap it out with the magring. However I don't know whether the gels will fit over the glass dome on the strobe and I don't really want to drop £550 on this set up to find that it doesn't.

Hi Robert, thanks again for an informative video. I have a question about the Godox XPro trigger - I contacted Godox about this, but they haven't answered back. I do a lot of product shooting and sometimes it would be easier for me to adjust the power directly on the lamps, because my camera is on a tripod and angled up high or out of reach, but the lamps I adjust - but the XPro keeps overriding the adjustments I make. Do you have a workaround for this problem. How do I setup the XPro to "just" being a trigger - not a controller. Thanks again for your channel - it really is very helpful. Phillip.

The pink elephant in the room is the Magbox price compared to other options. There's just no way to get around this for me. Magmod makes great gear but the market already has a slew of less expensive (Adorama GLOW and CheetahStand Easy Open softboxes to name a few) that are equally effective options and don't lock you into using only fresnel shaped heads. There is also a hefty 'design tax' associated with the MagBox. It's not like I couldn't gel lights before and with the H200 R GODOX head the process is just as simple.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 5 жыл бұрын
Very much my feelings as well. Even the new higher end softbox designs from Adorama and Cheetah (both offering no umbrella mechanism and therefore no center obstructions) are more cost effective, have an open inside for ease of gelling, and are focusing rod compatible. I'll not argue that it's expensive, but I also support that expense when it leads to progress, and the focus diffuser and magshoe are both representative of the spoils of that R&D. Hell, we can all enjoy cheap magnetic modifiers on the Godox round head now because of Magmod's quest to design more efficient systems.
@michaelschettl9509
@michaelschettl9509 4 жыл бұрын
What gets me about the "price is justified because of the R&D" argument is, when you look at what Godox has done with the R&D of their light systems, even getting photographers that were invested in the high-end systems like Prophoto to switch over to Godox because it's as good or better & they were able to do it at a reasonable price point it's hard to justify Mag Mods prices.

Test hot spot light with the fresnel theory front diffuser. With fresnel lensed flashes. No expanded line. The price compared to glow is insane. I like Elinchrom modifiers over glow. Just by a lil. More "sparkel"? I don't know. And they're easy open and mount too. But pricewise glow modifiers still win. Magmod is almost at elite level in pricing. They aren't a elite level look. Using speed lights is kinda bottom of the barrel for lights. Then add in highest end modifiers? Seriously shocked these even sell. When the flash, a box full of electronic genius, is cheaper by a lot then the modifier with zero electronics. Something is very wrong.
@mikezupancic2182
@mikezupancic2182 4 жыл бұрын
I'd agree with much of this, except any of the more name brand softboxes are expensive as hell too, and the lights are insanely priced. If you are going to compare with the Adorama house brand then yes, it is super expensive. Personally, I think if they ditched the softbox and came up with the magring and mag shoe with a bowens mount so you could mount any modifier yet slap the AD200s in there and snap the thing closed, they could sell the adapters for a hundred each and I'd instantly buy 3 or 4.

Not really impressed. $290 for a single 2' octa and its mounting accessories is way too much. If you're gonna use the AD200/Evolv 200 you can get a Quantum QF35 23" octa that fits right onto the barebulb. It's lighter, has a plate to eliminate hotspots and collapses down to the size of a tri-fold umbrella. For other modifiers the Bowens mount still makes the most sense. The S-mount bracket can be used with anything from umbrellas and cheap(Glow/Cheetah/Godox) soft/octa boxes all the way up to more expensive(Westcott) boxes with the correct speed ring, as can the AD-S2 and all your AD400/600's.

The system looks convenient however at $300.00, it is over priced. $ 125.00, is a more suitable value.

I'll not argue that they are expensive. But, keep in mind it's their design efforts that have lead to magnetic modifiers on the new flashes from Godox and Profoto. The focus diffuser is a genius reimagination of grids with more efficiency. The magshoe is better than any hot shoe mount on the market. They have a track record for progressing gear in a saturated market with very unique and well thought out systems.

As a wedding photographer, the only thing holding me back is the case. I've heard that the quality isn't what one would expect from MM; it's been noted that they start coming apart shortly after purchase. Once they fix that and the strap I might throw down.

Two thing that keep me from purchasing Magmod. It's just way too heavy and "extremely" overpriced. Just can't justify either for my money.

Hey. I really like your reviews and channel. But in general a speed light based soft box doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Unless you only shoot indoors or at night you won't have enough power to go thru the diffusion and travel a good distance. They probably won't do a larger size because the smaller lights couldn't produce enough watts for it.

Hey Michael. With the compatibility with 2X Ad200s, that can easily be solved. As shown by the sample, it's capable of balancing light with a subject who's being hit by direct sunlight. And, if I recall correctly both flashes were at 1/8 or 1/4 power in that instance (in standard sync), while still being quite a ways away (could be much closer if shot at a longer focal length). So there's still some flexibility when using it outdoors, although yes regular speedlights would be pushed to the max outdoors and have a very restricted distance.
