Out of all the Magnavox consoles that I've worked on, I've never had an audio output transistor fail and have only seen one RF amp transistor become intermittent (germanium). The transistors generally hold up well in these.
@clifffton

That series had problems when the RF transistors did fail. By 75 they became fairly unavailable. They were built like tanks.

I am not a fan of shooting a capacitor canon at something, but I have learned through my own experience that Astro Sonic chassis just need them. Many times Magnavox used those axial Nichicons on the amplifier board too, and they are always bad to some level. I too rarely have one of those can caps be bad, but the upper end split chassis models often have bad PS caps on the power amp board. That chassis is from an Astro Sonic 15. 15 watts total by the older rating system.
@alanmaier
@alanmaier 5 жыл бұрын
I laughed hard when Bryan was taping caps inside that acoustic phonograph! But on a serious note, I live in Fort Wayne Indiana where Magnavox Astro Sonics are bountiful and in beautiful cosmetic condition, but often were retired due to the stereo failing. I buy them as a collector and restore them. My Astro Sonic 15 had the same issue as this one.. was retired and placed in the dining room as a hutch. Cabinet was too nice to junk. I bought it at the family estate sale. This is the only Astro Sonic label console I have come across that did not have aluminum horns up front. If it did not say "Astro Sonic" on the bezel, I would suspect it was from the lower Magna Sonic line.

Eight years ago I did a recap of my 1966 Magnavox Astrosonic 100. Has separate receiver power amp chassis. A lot of caps to replace. Glad it used pc boards. Earlier models used point to point wiring. The filter cap under chassis for the power suplply had a chunk of plastic missing from it. Once recapped it sounded as good as new.

Heeeeere we have a new Shango video! I can attest for Magnavox capacitors. I have a suitcase record player from 1962. All those little black cylinder-type caps were bad or going bad. However, the filter electrolytic was just fine, no hum at all. Also, I read that Mrs. Miller's first album sold 250,000 copies in its first 3 weeks. I wonder how Paul McCartney felt when she did "It's a Hard Day's Night"!

Those axial Nichicons are real early ones and identifiable by their color. Later, (1968+) they made outstanding ones. They were identifiable by being light blue in color (later (post 1978) they were improved again and became dark blue in color. These are very dependable and rarely give trouble. ALL early Japanese electrolytics are probably suspect, especially Sanyo plastic-cased (1960-1968) ones.

Thumbs up for good work. Similar observations on large metal can filter caps and Japanese TO1 cased Germaniums from 50s and 60s era. Dome top transistors get weird, but luckily they were common for only a few years. I seem to find more dirty switch contacts, cracked circuit board traces around tuning caps and volume controls, cracked output tube sockets. Carbon composition resistors can get constipated, also overheating, leading to cracks causing opens. Intermittents are the worst. I don't have the patience to rework IF cans, unless they are the earlier large ones.

10:55 I've always thought balance controls were over-rated; probably useful in the early days of stereo simulcasts, or maybe if the speakers were at different ends of the room, but harder to justify in a console or a boombox. And, I'd much rather have only one volume control than separate ones for L and R.

the only germaniums that seem to give trouble are those AF11x or OC170/OC171 types or similar what can develop tin whiskers internally, i have had 2 AC12x types develop whiskers as well, but 2 in 30 ish years of tinkering with old stuff isnt bad! had many more AF types bad, most have cleared when blasted with a high current pulse!
