Dan, that big, round token with the number on it and hole at the top looks like an old miners tag, AKA colliery / lamp / pit / tally check. They used to hang them on boards at the mine entrance, and before anyone went into it they would take their assigned tag with them. When they came back up they returned the tag to the board, and if any were missing at the end of the shift they would know immediately who hadn't come back up and where they should be. They also used similar tags in mines where pay was determined by load, and each miner would put tags with their number on them in their ore carts before sending them back up, so they would get credit for them come pay time. And given how much ore was likely shipped down that canal over the years, I can definitely see one turning up there. Google image search "miners tags" to see some examples to compare it to yours (if you kept it, which I hope you did!).

I agree that it's a miners tag. 6 old collieries in my local area and I detected many of them tags including colliery pony tags.

Found on a forum posted in 2008 about the company labelled on the can. "Thornley and Knight were the original manufacturers of Tekaloid paint, which was widely used in the commercial and motor vehicle trades. They were taken over in the 70's by Croda paints who now are also gone. The factory was on the left hand side going up the hill towards Muntz St. it was just after Cherrywood Road." Apparently the company was around during WW1.

Your out galavanting around, skipping along holding hands, how so cute. All the while I'm outside mowing the lawn in 90 degree plus humid weather. Then you all go play in the water. The water I was covered in didn't come from no canal. I sweat my bum off. Do ya wanna trade? Loved both videos today.

That round thing with snails was the foot off a small metal pallet ,I used to make them when I first started welding in Leeds .nice day again ,I look at the canal on such a lovely day and I just want to fish lol .great fun day all the best Ant .say hi to maz .

Nice job Dan I’ve never tried magnet fishing . I’ve got some old swimming spots in the mountains of Hong Kong that would be good to try . Got to get me a nice big magnet first. Knowing my luck though I’d grab a hand grenade from the war in Hong Kong .

Thornley and Knight Ltd was established in 1797 so that can could be over 200 years old but it's in to good condition to be 200 years old so I would say about 60 to 100 years old can

You can use that hook pipe for sticking in the ground and hanging baskets of flowers etc. on it

yeah, good re-use of a long hook! Tall plant hooks go for $15.00 to $40.00 here. I paid $25 for mine.

6:52, number 202 is a cattle identification tag.

Ahoy from the states, mates. I believe your "202 tag" is a valve ID tag for boiler room valves etc. Keep on hunting. ;-)

Aww I haven't seen either of you 3 in a while now and how perfect to tell y'all I just got my 1st magnet in the mail yesterday! Sadly it's WAY TOO HOT with the high temp and humidity. At the moment it is 87ºF/31ºC but feels like 98ºF/37ºC..because of the dew point at 76ºF/24ºC and humidity at 70%! It's only gonna get worse since it's just 1:36pm EST We are just 5 hours behind y'all over there, correct? And 6 hours with Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany...and so on! Been gr8 seeing all 3 of ya! ☮☯

I've got a creek and a bridge behind my house, now all I need is a magnet and a rope, then I can be just like Dan and go fishing for junk 😉. That tag with a number on it could be lots of different things; a tool check tag, something off a key for a room or lock box...
