What happens when you shoot spherical neodymium magnets out of a shotgun? Zane was kind enough to supply us with enough to load into 4 shells. 28 per shell. We shot them at various objects at close and long range. Will the magnets separate? Will they be attracted to each other and stick back together in flight? Will they stick to the metal targets we shoot at? Will they cause the shotgun to blow up?

+Patriot 03 Jokes aside, I hope the message at about half way through wasn't directed toward me and my comment I made the other day about "wanting" to see higher resolution slomo. _(Which it may not)_ I *never* said I "can't stand" the current setup, or anything hostile like that. I just said I'd like to see higher resolution slowmo in the future _(Like when someone would say they'd like to win the lottery, or something silly)_. Not even as a demand, or a serious comment in the present reality however when you said *_"I've given up saving for a better camera."_* (As in, ever or also that there was originally an intention to) that sorta killed my hopes to see (one day) a cheaper, higher speed/resolution camera that could eventually be used in the years to come. That's no disrespect to you or your content, there is no denying that a higher resolution, and or higher speed footage would allow us to learn even more from the already amazing slomo on the channel. I'll also be the first to say that I haven't spent a dime on any filming equipment and its not my money so of course I'm in no position to make demands of you or criticize your process and the work it takes to run it. (Or the cost of it as is) For instance, it does not mean I "can't stand" the already amazing and enlightening footage. Nor does it mean I don't appreciate what work already goes into the current production both on your end and the technology used in the cameras. I would never prefer a video with no slowmo, over one with even the lowest quality slowmo (Which this is clearly above that point anyway but for the sake of argument..) - Before the halfway point I was already asking "Where's the slowmo?" - Further, having an opinion about something I'd like to see, or news I've heard does NOT mean I have a sense of entitlement _(Not that you claimed that)_. to be clear I fully acknowledge that I am NOT entitled to ANYTHING you produce. I'm grateful for what you already produce (for me, for free) and don't ever think otherwise. TL;DR I meant no disrespect. I won't be ashamed of the fact that I prefer higher resolution imagery over lesser if given the option to choose between either. That does *NOT* mean anything else other than what I explicitly wrote.

The results of the high speed cameras is the best part of the test, for me at least. I love being able to see and understand what is happening with the projectile between the time it leaves the muzzle when it impacts a target. (Also am partial to watching water melons being shredded)

+Dan Troop I agree, I think he added that part to take shots at some people who said they would like to see higher resolution slowmo, mistakenly taking offense. (I'm basing that off some comments I saw, and one that I made, so maybe I'm wrong and someone literally said they "couldn't stand the low resolution slowmo" - But I didn't see that being said)

+Patriot 03 unfortunately cameras with high frames per second for recording are very expensive. we're looking at a $50k-$100k investment here :// (but it is worth it!) i'm interested with the new camera technologies. i'm hoping decent slow motion footage will be readily accessible in the near future.

+Patriot 03 I'd be willing to bet it was a shot at someone who probably said exactly what Jeff put in the video. I think most of us who appreciate the slo-mo footage have no misconceptions about how prohibitively expensive high-speed + high-resolution cameras cost. It's just a limitation of the video hardware, but when manufacturers allow it, you're trading off high amount of pixels per frame or high amounts of frame with lower pixel resolution. As Pieman6711 already pointed out, to get the gear with capability to do both is a big investment. Essentially why I try to click like on as many of TFM's videos as I can, to add to their revenue, they make great vids and I'm sure they'll keep investing in better gear as they can. tl;dr - Don't take it personal, It's just TFM's way of passive aggressively dissing the loudmouth complainers

+Christopher Hurley i work in a lab modeling water droplets hitting a 500°c metal plate, we use a hi-speed camera. University paid for it but very expensive. On such cameras you either have high speed but lower res or not as high speed but good res. plus you can only buffer to the internal camera memory as even 1gbit network connection saturates. BTW this is a over 200k camera.

Hey Pal, that was interesting stuff. But, for the sake of 'Testing', it was a bit disjointed and confusing. Would have been much more informative to have maybe 3-4 targets (clay, hdd, melon, door), and then cycle your munitions through in order, starting with buckshot for a baseline on each target type, then using the magnets/solid, magnets/hollow, magnets/sabot. Anyway, I'm a test guy... still, a very interesting video... Thanks. Yeah, I heard your comment, others are asking my same question. Best of luck.

If they really didn't like it they wouldn't watch.

+Chuffered FUoogle I wholly agree with this. But as I started to think about it, I wondered how much it would cost to rent a really high speed camera for a 2-3 day shoot, and invest some real cash in it? The "slow mo guys" get about a minimum of 1.4 million views per video, and sometimes *way* more. It could have the potential to grow this channel, and then bring in more money to be able to afford more shooting. I just looked it up quickly, and it seems like a minimum of $2500 a day, because you usually have to hire a technician with it. And then you have to rent the additional equipment, and then also have enough hard drives to store the footage... But if that increased the ad revenue on KZfaq, it could potentially pay for it. It does seem like a lot, but if you planned out your shoot for 8-10 hours and prepared everything in advance you could really get a lot of amazing footage to last for months, or even a whole year. +Taofledermause could even re-shoot the more interesting things he has done already, but "in HD!!!1" Anyway, like you said, it is a great channel already. No complaints as-is.
@giin97

+inthefade yeah, he's already said he doesn't really have the money to do much fancy stuff, that's why the more exotic and expensive rounds are either sent to him, or he only makes a couple. I doubt he could spend thousands of dollars on a single day renting all that and firing hundreds of random rounds to make months worth of videos.

Actually this is the most lethal shotgun ammo you can find. Once these rare earth magnets get lodged inside someone, they start to get attracted to eachother.. If the magnetic force was _incredibly_ strong, you'd need something like a titanium shotgun to stop the pellets from magnetically sticking to the barrel. It'd be reducing muzzle velocity anyway. You might be able to use some kind of strong aluminum if that's a thing.

+Louise Logar You are thinking of Buckminsterfullerene I believe, C60. Named after Buckminster Fuller who was the architect behind the modern geodesic dome, which if extrapolated to a full sphere would resemble this carbon arrangement. I imaging buckyballs (the magnets) are named similarly since you can create similar arrangements to the molecular structures that you can create with carbon.

Without even watching the video, I can tell you that neodymium magnets have a tendency to shatter. One of my friends was playing with his two 3 inch puck magnets without safety glasses back when we were in college and he accidentally lost hold of one when it was above the other. The force of the two pucks colliding sent a fragment straight at my friend's eye. He was lucky he didn't permanently blind himself.

neodymium is rather brittle though. lovely material. I've got an alternator ring magnet from a cruise missile and my god it's hideous to get off any steel surface. any chance of a chronograph check against a typical bird shot load though? because the steel barrel must surely cause some kind of slow down. however, that being said we are getting into the realms of rail gun here guys! treat the barrel correctly and it could add to the load speed.

In nearly all defensive situations, this is exactly the effect you'd want a Shotgun to produce. The polarity of the mag balls forced some separation into random 'groups,' (also creating unit spin.) This spin ate some of the velocity of some members of some units via unbalanced momentum transfer (one into, two or more) and increased air friction. The effect is a combination of: - varying magnetically forced separation, - inflight rebounding, - _(and to a lesser degree)_ regrouping, - unit spin, - air friction, - and adhesion to some environmental structures _(anything ferrous)_ This establishes a very broad, very irregular pattern, of varying force "projectiles." In defensive situations, targets will likely: - not be fully clear of obstruction, - nor -- because of 'target activity' -- uniform shape. (such as broad sheet of paper, with printed circles & nailed down) - nor situated forward of "safe backstops." - Separation units will hit hard and very wide - recombined low-energy non-penetrating units still won't do someone's kneecap or nose any good.. - but will quickly loose momentum beyond engagement area, - magnetic balls may even self-capture lessening over-penetration beyond engagement, - provide some small (legal) argument for lack of intent to produce armor-piercing ammunition, - help against hostiles with a metal plates in their hedz..
