Hello, I am Omar, I am a radiology technician and on my channel you will find videos in Italian and Spanish to inform and explain in a simple way the tests that are performed in MRI.
Today I wanted to create a short video to try to answer a simple question that I get asked very often: How long does an MRI take?
It is a question that is asked very often in the comments of my videos because MRI exams can last from 15 minutes to more than an hour.
For a person suffering from claustrophobia, for example, knowing the exact duration can be very important, to allow the patient to gain strength and complete the examination.
To clarify this aspect it is important to understand the 3 different phases of the exam. A preparation phase, an execution phase and a conclusion or discharge phase of the patient. There are deadlines that must be met before the exam begins, which are very important. The time of the examination may vary depending on the type of MRI used and the type of examination to be performed. In the final phase or dismissal of the patient, certainly less important, but nevertheless must be taken into account.
First consideration to be made, very often the time of the appointment does not correspond to the time of the start of the exam. Before starting an MRI exam, it is necessary to fill out a safety questionnaire with numerous questions, useful for the radiology technician in charge of the exam, in order to have an overview of the patient. It is a very important and fundamental step to evaluate the compatibility, the suitability of the patient with the MRI examination. I don't want to talk about the security questionnaire today because it is a very complex subject and I plan to dedicate an entire video to it.
The patient is given an appointment between 15 and 20 minutes before the start of the exam, so that they have time to fill in the safety questionnaire and handle all administrative issues.
Once the administrative questions are completed, the radiology technician will review the answers to the previously filled out safety questionnaire. If there are no contraindications to the examination, the patient will be escorted to the locker room to continue with the preparation of the test. This means undressing and wearing only underwear (socks and briefs) and wearing a gown provided by the radiology center. If it were necessary to administer a contrast agent or any other medication, this is when the patient would be prepared, before entering the magnet room, before starting the examination. For this reason, it is preferable to do this work before starting the MRI exam to minimize the time inside the magnet.
This preparation phase is not considered exam time yet, but exam preparation time.
The actual duration of an MRI exam can be calculated from the entrance and exit of the magnet room.
