ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Britain's largest birds
White tailed eagles have a remarkable 8ft wingspan and are so big they were once, famously, described as 'flying barn doors'. At this size, they are not difficult to spot and within half an hour of arriving on the island I find my first, perched high in the trees. But it's not until this gigantic bird takes off that you appreciate its size.
Sea eagle tour
White tailed eagles have followed fishing boats for centuries, hoping to get a little from the catch. I join Mull Charters to see if I can spot any. www.mullcharters.com/
Dolphin pod
Moments after we set off we were joined by a pod of dolphins. I get an underwater camera beneath the boat so I can follow the action.Dolphins are so playful, listen to the sounds they make!
Sea eagle dive
The white tailed eagle's hunting technique involves flying close to the water, scanning for fish and then diving down. Watch how at the last moment they turn to grasp the fish with their enormous claws.
Catching fish
White tailed eagles catch fish near the surface because if their feathers get wet they find it harder to fly. They have large beaks which they use to tear up prey.
Sea eagle chick
I even spot a white tailed eagle with a chick. Sea eagles are dependent on their parents for about six weeks after they fledge.
Watching from land
You don't have to charter a boat to see sea eagles. I managed to watch them from the shoreline. Watch for the moment when one eagle flies over a group of sunbathing harbour seals - they quickly scarper!

I was lucky enough to have a white tailed eagle perched outside my house in the suburbs, the crows that normally live in the trees had been going crazy all morning and when I looked up I saw this enormous shape dominating a branch,it dwarfed the many crows around it.When it finally took flight,it was like seeing a pterodacyl flying away.I'll never forget seeing it,magnificent creature!

Bald eagles are generally larger than white-tailed eagles. Bald eagles typically have a wingspan ranging from 6 to 7 feet (1.8 to 2.1 meters) and can weigh between 8 to 14 pounds (3.6 to 6.3 kilograms). In comparison, white-tailed eagles usually have a slightly smaller wingspan, ranging from 7 to 8 feet (2.1 to 2.4 meters), and a similar weight range. While there can be some variability within each species, the bald eagle is generally larger in size than the white-tailed eagle.

OH ROBERT!!You are an extraordinary photographer that will benefit generations to come!! 😃❤️ here in Florida we have the Osprey which locals call the fishhawk. I have seen them dive and get fish but they get their wings wet. My father's family came from Scotland so the scenery you had was magnificent! Could you tell me or maybe have a video that shows what is the difference between a hawk and an eagle? I have often wondered what distinguishes the two Raptors and nobody has ever been able to tell me. Thank you for a wonderful video of Scotland and their famous eagle. I hope one day to visit my father's family's Homeland and I will definitely look up the white-tailed eagle!!! Thank you for your wildlife support!! His work is so professional. I enjoy Robert's style. As for the hawks and eagles. Mostly, it's their size, wingspan and strength, as well as nesting habits. They often have the same diet, and calls are also similar. But usually, hawks are smaller and more prolific than eagles, where there are also a few discrepancies as some eagles can be smaller than hawks, but it's rare. I love birds and I live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where we have many different species. Hope y'all are doing okay in this hideous storm. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Sunshine State.
