"Gorgeous. A perfectly cast, beautifully directed movie." - The New York Times
Watch the Red Band Trailer for Sundance Film Festival hit film Tangerine. In theatres July 10th.
It's Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee (newcomer Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend (James Ransone, STARLET, "Generation Kill") hasn't been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, the working girl and her best friend, Alexandra (newcomer Mya Taylor), embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumor. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity. Director Sean Baker’s prior films (STARLET, PRINCE OF BROADWAY) brought rich texture and intimate detail to worlds seldom seen on film. TANGERINE follows suit, bursting off the screen with energy and style. A decidedly modern Christmas tale told on the streets of L.A., TANGERINE defies expectation at every turn.

This movie was incredible. So gritty, but also humorous and light. It really captured the "a day in the life" of trans sex workers in Hollywood. I also like how it highlighted one of LA's smaller ethnic groups, Armenians. AND it was filmed with an iPhone?! Wow, great movie.
@cupnoodles201
@cupnoodles201 7 жыл бұрын
president camacho I said smaller, because relative to larger ethnic groups like Mexicans, Chinese, etc. Armenians aren't usually associated with LA. A lot of people don't even know that Little Armenia exists or that there is a sizable Armenian population here.

president camacho LOL why are you getting so defensive? I just think it's cool that they included a group that a lot of people don't know have a sizable population in LA. It shows the diversity of the city.

Funny you say that because I actually did not like the Armenian subplot that much. It just felt like a really uninteresting add on to me. Cindi and Alex were a lot more fun to watch.

I know I'm 9 months late to responding to this, but I'll give it a go anyway. The plot is important because it showcases men who fetishize my community and only care about us as sex objects that they are too ashamed with to be in a public relationship with. It's important to highlight this because a lot of people wonder why Sin-Dee doesn't dump her stupid boyfriend and find a man who would treat her better, but the thing that this plotline sheds light on is that there aren't many men who will treat us better. I hope that makes sense but feel free to ask any questions.

if I remember correctly they used two thing items. a lense or lenses specially made for the iPhone which gave it more of a wide screen look. the item is like 100 bucks forgot who makes it but it was like a prototype that had a kick starter and tenteybuaed this module or divice which transported the recording information into that upgraded the visuals to around a 4k resolution. I dint remember what that device was either but it wasn't just the phone but shoes you, you don need I tech shit to make a pretty good film

This movie was amazing. I'm not even talking about the fact that it was filmed on an Iphone. The characters were so real and I couldn't help but feel their pain along with them. Homophobic and Trans-phobic people should be forced to watch just to see how human these people really are. Just like anyone else they're struggling through life with a lack of love. A lack of love from society, from family, and most importantly-from themselves. Not only that, this movie was hilarious as well! I think I'll re-watch it very soon.

***** I wasn't saying anything about what it was edited on. Not every movie needs to look like a Terrence Malick experience. Fifteen years ago, people were saying the same thing about how von Trier filmed his movies pre-"Antichrist" and yet they still pop up on best of lists for his innovative filming techniques. I'm seeing the movie at some point this weekend and I can say, I think the choice of filming on an iPhone, as dumb as those things are (in my book), was actually an applaudable choice to give the story a raw edge that keeps it real alongside the characters' story,

I was the very first graveyard donut clerk at this donut shop ( at 00:22 ) at the corner of Santa Monica blvd. and Highland ave. in Hollywood in 1985. It was opened as the second DONUT STOP by former LA police officer, Robert 'Bob' Kenny. The first store is at Yucca and Highland ave. and was adjoined to Bob's Famous Philly Steaks, added after a pizza shop went defunct and Bob got the idea to cut through the wall and make it one big shop. I initially worked at the Hollywood Blvd. shop, but really liked the solitude of the new store ( seen throughout Tangerine). Right away I became hip to the male prostitution ring in and around that area. My donut shop served as an oasis of sorts for some of these dudes. I dealt with all personalities and picked my battles with them. I was 18 so it wasn't uncommon for someone to proposition me. I just played off the slime and it wasn't long before people actually had my back. Actually, it was Ray the baker who kept the peace. He just walked out into the dining room with his pistol showing in the back of his apron and gave them a look. Ray was a slim, but tough old dude that had lots of faded green tattoos and 13 tatted on one ear lobe. The donut shop looks identical in this movie as it did 30 years ago! The same ice-cream freezer all the way on the right of the counter by the side door. There are more soda coolers than I remember, and they started selling sandwiches at some point I see. Basically, the clerk you see in the film is who I was in that shop 30 years ago when it opened. I would have busted out the carrying on at the end of the movie, but maybe not. Hey, I love entertaining confrontations and that shop was full of them. I let people hang around, eat their donut, drink their coffee, and even sleep for five or ten minutes, but then it was the mini ball bat on the table. SLAM!! Looks like some things never change. BTW what is that huge white building behind the Mobile gas station? Anyone? I stared at that every night and never knew what it was. - Great movie ****1/2

Mud Kips Thanks, it was definitely a rad and scary time, the mid 80's. As I recall the red pay phones around the shop were always busted...Still had the 10 cent pay phones, but the ATT, grey phone, phone booths gave way to the always broken private brand of crappy red phone booths. Nobody had cell phones. Around 86'-88' there were black market 'satellite numbers' you could buy off people on the street. Sometimes you'd get lucky and one would work for several days, but sometimes not. I remember paying $20 to some guy only to have it be a bunk number. See, back then paying $.60 a minute was not uncommon for long distance calls, and that's from a home land line! So if you wanted to talk for a half hour it was $30. And that was a rock bottom price on weekends. Phone cards didn't come along until years later. Funny, kids today probably don't even remember those, and they were being used up until maybe 10 years ago before cell phones got cheap. ...now how'd I get onto this topic?? Oh' well, a day in the life 30 years ago.

I am going to buy this DVD asap... a must for anybody who is interested in modern film making ...

Here's why this worked on an iPhone: • Good characters & story, told within the filmmakers technical limitations & resources. • Crew knew what they were doing, with any camera. How to compose shots, etc. • Sound is good. • Daylight shots mostly shot during magic hour. • Nighttime shots in well lit-areas. • Shots on the move used a quality stabilizer. • iPhone had FilmicPro plugin. • Anamorphic adapter used on the camera. • Expertly color graded in editing. • Editing is tight. To surmise: A great crew can use almost any gear. Hand an amateur filmmaker a Panavision camera and 2-ton grip truck, and they will still produce shit.

Exactly. These commenters don't actually know what goes into making a film like this. The only way the film could have been made for $8 is if they managed to get a favour from EVERY person involved with the film.

According to Sean Barker the film's budget was stimated in 100,000 bucks bro which is still really low compared to Hollywood standards

+Jesse G What was the budget of this film? I bet it would surprise. Using the iphone was a gimmick or more accurately an experimental choice by the director, not a budgetary choice. If you read articles about the film. They still had professional sound, dolly tracks, possible jib shots, and specially fitted lenses for the iphone which cost money. They would've saved money using a black magic pocket camera, probably. Let's not forget all the post-production costs(editor, sound effects, colorist, and composer). Also, the DP probably cost money unless he did it for free for some reason. I think the point is you still cannot make a great film with just an iphone. It's certainly easier but don't deny yourself the help of a professional to help you along the way. Check out all those crash the super bowl submissions. Most of them are terrible because they don't have the know how and right equipment. Just saying.

This film proves that you don't need the latest technology (DSLR to be specific) to create an incredible film. It is just a matter of maximizing the device that you have and putting passion into it.
