Just saw this recently. A very nice little film, and this was definitely one of the most touching and funniest scenes in it. Dakota Fanning was terrific.

In an otherwise sad film, Patton’s scene was like an unexpected ray of light. When he pops up, I had already forgotten I’d seen his name in the opening credits. Besides Dakota’s strong performance, this was a highlight of the movie. However, I don’t think it should have been released for viewing this way. Kind of ruins the impact.

I agree! Why in Klingon? Throughout the entire film she identifies with Spock and the rest of the Vulcans. Why not a Golic dialect?

lol my dude, no matter how much of a Trekkie you are, no one is going to spend their free time learning the Vulcan language. And yet if you learn Klingon, chances are you'll find someone who you can communicate with randomly on the street.

To be fair Klingon is one of the most widely spoken/developed conlangs out there because of popularity and the fact there’s just more material available as far as I’ve seen. Heck it’s even on Duolingo now, not that I can pronounce any of it very well. Sindarin deserves to be on there too 😂

The Klingon Language is the only one. There are only a few phrases and sentences in Vulcan or any other culture in Star Trek. Klingon is a fully developed language.

This is not proper Klingon. I don't know enough to speak it fluently, but I do know enough to know that there is no Klingon word for "safe"

The closest thing I know is QaD (haven't heard him saying this, he said Q'a Do'h or something, which is not the same), and that means "dried up", in the context of dried up enemy or dried up danger. Another one would be choq - which means "preserve", that might be even closer.

My guess is they were improvising a bit, but it might be that people have been trying to further develop the language outside of canon anyway since there’s translations of stuff like Hamlet

Sometimes certain words in other languages translate to something more literal but are used in specific context/sentence structure to imply different things. It’s kind of fascinating when they do that in conlangs too! Either that, or they didn’t put too much effort into properly translating the lines.

As an autistic Trekkie I would have flipped him off in klingon for this stupid stereotype! Bad acting. This movie was bad
@ToHoldNothing
@ToHoldNothing 10 ай бұрын
It's making a genuine effort, from what I gather, seeing the scene again without having seen the movie (really should, autistic representation is important and Dakota Fanning did her research on this, which is why they make her distinct and not a stereotype), makes me wonder if Patton Oswalt's character is autistic or is more suggesting he's a friend in being a fellow Star Trek fan. Either way, an interesting use of what is supposedly a minor character in the film
