Great review! There's only one Thomas Sullivan Magnum and his name is Tom Selleck! That cast was perfection. A tight knit band of brothers that helped each other become better men as the series progressed. Haven't been seen before or since on tv. The chemistry between Magnum, Higgins, TC and Rick could never be replicated.

Thank you for the early review of this long anticipated Blu-ray set! You mentioned the Murder She Wrote crossover episode not being included (“Magnum on Ice”), but I did not hear any discussion about the Simon & Simon crossover episode “Emeralds are not a Girl’s Best Friend.” The original Universal DVDs, the individual digipack seasons, included both of these episodes (the DVD box set seen in this video only includes the Murder She Wrote crossover and omits the Simon & Simon episode), so it’s a shame Mill Creek couldn’t also provide these. But I get it, I’m sure they simply didn’t have the ability to license them, and also why they were able to include the two Rockford episodes (albeit in lower picture quality) with Tom Selleck.

I'm gonna get it on DVD. not the one that has double sided discs. The one I'm getting is the re-release that has the really thick cases that has double stacked discs with out the bonus features.

Probably the best TV show ever made, the carachter arc in the 8 season run is so well written, which wasn't common at the time (and sure, there are bad seasons in between but still), great cast, chemistry, themes... pity it's 200euros here in the EU (like 250 US dollars!) otherwise it would be mine already.

I bought all 8 seasons on Apple TV (from apple) for 24.99. Not sure if they still have that offering. The picture is extremely good and the colors spot on. I compared it to one episode which I had bought on google play movies and the apple version had more (better) saturated colors and the grain was more natural to the eye. I am wondering how the apple streaming version would compare to the blu ray. Since it’s low resolution to begin with o can’t imagine it being much better.

Excellent review..... I'm not sure I like them better than the UK version I've owned for some time but I've only watched a bit. BTW... I still think the Mill Creek absolute best series is The Shield.... massive amounts of bonus features great widescreen remastering..... but this is fun to have region 1 and I do appreciate the packaging, there is even a fun photo INSIDE the box that houses the three packages.

there was a rumor that Jack Lord was offered to appear in the Magnum P.I. Pilot. but decline. after 12 season of 5-O I don't blame him. he pretty was pretty much done with playing Steve McGrarret.

Amazing review, thanks! I am pleasantly surprised that Mill Creek didn't overstuff the discs and actually took advantage of the format. That's a major plus and justifies the higher than usual (for them) price. What IS a bummer is that the 2 hour movies are in "2 part" format. Those usually lead to missing or re-shuffled scenes and credits where they don't belong. I don't mind them as a bonus feature and would have preferred that to Rockford Files episodes, but not having the original two hour versions is an omission that may have me hanging onto my DVDs.

I know this is minor but they didn't go with the original jazzy intro for the pilot . It would have been nice if they just released it with that original intro, it was only used for the pilot but still would be nice . Can anyone verify if the other blu ray releases have it uncut?

Hi Cereal, are all the episodes the complete episodes with full running times?? I heard there are some episodes that are shortened on the DVD set, but I don't know about this set.

Heath, really happy to see you contrast the quality with the older DVD boxset (which I own), and this Blu-ray set (which I'm considering). Also great to have you report on the bit-rate. One correction though... when you say 20-25 megabytes per second, that should be megaBITS. I suspect you already know that, but you said it wrong 4 times in the first 90 secs, so I'm chiming in here. ;)

hows the facial color tv aired looks too dark

I want to get the DVD version as the blu ray is just too expensive, but not too bothered. Problem I have is that here in the UK for reasons I can't find an answer for we get only get 157 episodes are not the full 162. Why? no idea. So for us what I can figure out (and please correct me if I'm wrong) we are missing the Murder She Wrote episode, the Simon & Simon two parter and oddly Echoes Of The Mind Parts 1 & 2 and read all these are only on the region 1 releases. So looking around I found one release which seems to include these episodes, and that is a 2018 release which states has 162 episodes. But seeing this new 2022 DVD released the episodes have been remastered. So I would like the 2018 release with everything but is the picture quality still decent or is the transfer no good, or should I forget about that release and go for the new 2022 remaster. Can anyone help?

Great review! One question however: Can you say anything about the known issue of changing quality (sharpness) which is evident on the UK BR release for example? The thing is that most of season 1 and 2 look amazing, yet later a lot of episodes look far less brilliant/ sharp (more like 720p/DVD resolution). It often changes from one episode to the next, one looks great the next looks much less sharp, as if they only had lower-quality transfers to work with for these episodes. This is especially noticeable when you compare S1E8 ("The Ugliest Dog In Hawaii"-overall great 1080p quality) with pretty much any episode from S8 (looks almost like video transfer to me- clearly not real 1080p) for example. Would be great if you could check whether it's the same with this set! Maybe they used better source material/transfers from Universal here? I guess it's not very likely but it sure would be a great improvement! Of course any BR set is better than the DVDs and it's great that one is now available in the US too! But this issue has been a little annoying so far, and being a true magnum-maniac I'm looking for the ultimate best version of course 😅

Looks great-is it region free though? Also-a real shame after putting so much effort into the presentation of the discs and special features with interviews with MIke Post, etc but not to get any involvement from Tom Selleck. To have his involvement would have been great-an episode commentary or something. Amazing that a golden opportunity like this could be missed. I think Selleck just hangs out at his avocado farm now. I'd just hang around his front gates and offer him 5, 000 bucks to sit and watch an episode. But make it a two parter! Then you get double for your money. LOL Also-Tom is not the only Magnum link in those Rockford Files episodes. Larry Manetti who played Rick is also in those Rockford Files episodes shown on the Magnum blu ray.

I bought the box set from Amazon and quite a few discs were scratched up on the bottom. I sent it back for a replacement and it just arrived yesterday and every other disc is scratched on the bottom. Looks like they are getting lazy during the manufacturing process.

Universal "take such good care of their masters" ? Have you checked the bionics in the last 15 years and current bluray screw up ? It's cheap of the distributor to release the bonus "Selleck" episodes in lower quality... You should be hard on Mill Creek for releasing the syndicated version rather than the original broadcast instead of praising their cheap shortcuts.
