Obviously he is. I referred to his state of mind and that we likely won't see him play many more classical, apart from Norway Chess [fun format] and very very maybe Wijk aan Zee. I even assume he won't play another world cup if he wins this one and just enjoys life and Blitz/rapid instead.

I honestly understand completely. I have chosen personally not to play classical chess because I don't want to spend hours playing one game, while some of the tournament schedules are brutal. For Carlsen, he also has to spend at least 95% of the time playing drawn positions, having bashed out maybe 15 moves of theory, sometimes more, hoping he can eke out a small advantage. It can't be particularly inspiring.

There's clearly a desire on Magnus's part to win the one major tournament that has evaded him, even though classical time control chess is no longer his preferred game. I always suspected it was possible that he might just end up going back and qualifying the hard way, going through the candidate process and then winning the WCC again., just because he can. It's good to be the GOAT. Carlsen has done so much to promote chess over the course of his career that every player/enthusiast owes him a debt of gratitude. He has elevated the game and popularized it more than any prior champions. Naroditsky and Leko are such a great team as commentators, BTW. It's hilarious when they both admit they don't have a clue what these GM's are doing. Imagine how confused a lowly patzer like I am without their insights. Thanks fellas!
@alex86fire
@alex86fire 11 ай бұрын
It was also nice when they admitted that with an engine it's easy to see a line is winning, and then see how it's winning, but while playing, not really knowing something is winning. Because you can't burn 15-20 minutes on each move to see if that is the one winning position. Would love to see Magnus commentate his games after they happen like Hikaru does. It's very nice to listen to and sometimes understand what was going on in their mind during the game, when different positions occur. Hikaru for example very often says he did a move, knowing it's not the best one just to take people of of their prep, because he doesn't want to play against stockfish.

yep, even worse is if Vincent realized the missed move, then that would negatively affects his whole game knowing he missed a game winning move that secures his victory in the round and instead he now has to fight for the draw. Vincent struggled to form a solid plan afterwards in the game while Magnus was slowly but surely improving his position and slowly building up the pressure until Vincent makes enough little miscalculations to turn the game into a winning endgame for Magnus and then it's all over.

Well he effectively retired when he gave up the title, and as a multimillionaire (probably worth $20M-50M) that's fine, and he did have that incredible run a while ago playing blitz and now this "win on demand" win in classical, which is very hard to do.
@ksham.
@ksham. 11 ай бұрын
I disagree. I think he wants to move on from the notion of what others want out of him. He's already proven himself with like 2 decades of hard work. Now, it seems like he wants to play for fun and enjoy the game as he likes. And if classical is it, let him be. At the end of the day, he is human, yet everyone expects perfect chess out of him. He made one mistake and everyone dings him on it. He loses a game and everyone starts questioning his abilities. It's unnecessary. In turn, Vincent made one mistake that lost him this game, yet Vincent doesn't get any of this harsh critique.

people make way too big of a deal about his losses in classical chess. if it seems like the whole world is going to make ridiculous "washed" comments or talk about how he got eliminated by xyz over and over again in literally the next 5+ years, how could he possibly even remotely like classical. it is just really sad.. when losing a game is humiliation.

@@sagnaik World Cup is hard to lose since it's a knockout. Since anybody can lose to anybody, it's hard to "win on demand" as Carlsen did today, hence World Cup is often random as to who wins. But yeah it bugs him since he likes to win.
