I think one of the most enduring parts of his legacy will be not defending his world title. It's such a blow to FIDE's credibility that the best player in the world isn't interested. I think part of his decision is strategic, to weaken FIDE's control of top-level chess so the game can grow in new and interesting directions.

I don't think that was part of the reason for his decision - but I do think it's a welcome bi-product for him. It's pretty clear that Fide is a nightmare organisation, so not having to deal with them must be a relief - and seeing their grip on the game weaken as a result must be gratifying.

A refreshingly candid admission that he is not a creative player and, in that same regard, an interesting comparison with Anand! Magnus has shown time and again that the key to chess success is a mastery of the endgame, but most strong players tend to get bogged down in opening preparations and devote less time to endgames.

I'm one of these players you describe. My goal is to play aggressive, fun chess. End games aren't fun for me so I don't care to get good at them. I think this is why I've never found Magnus that interesting to watch.

I mean it's kinda fun watching him troll his opponents from time to time then play like a computer and win regardless. But it's not fun in the "sac 3 major pieces, then your queen and mate by force" kind of way.

There should be a new 'overall' world championship format. Simplify everything. Only rating spots. Average FIDE rating of blitz, rapid and classical over the last year, 8 highest rated players(excluding the current champion) play a candidates tournament. Format for the World Championship Match could be 3 mini-matches for example: 6 classical games, 12 rapid games, 24 blitz games. Maybe even a Fisher-Random round? That would bring out the best player overall and would be incredibly awesome to watch.

Terrific interview... Love the idea of fantasy chess, hope we get that asap. What he said about Chess and Chess 960 makes perfect sense; What ppl dont realize and fide as well, is the theory rn is totally diff than the past and combined with all the engine there are today, makes no sense at all to still playing the old classical format, we are in a different era, dont need to abolish the classical control, but lower a bit its the obviously needed change.

DA GOAT...... Respect !!🐐💯 I'm sure Carlsen will be pivotal in the inevitable evolution of chess formats( especially Classical ) in the years to come.... FIDE is basically delaying the inevitable at this point.... Chess world DESERVES to have the best player by far compete in the biggest title.....coz as we're seeing currently with Ding Liren's Shambolic performances in Tata Steel this year.....if you become Classical champion WITHOUT beating the previous champion and best player.....the title loses its SIGNIFICANCE, and you end up with a PSEUDO champion, who's not even a clear 2nd best in the world, let alone the best!! It's fair to say that at this point.... Classical World Championship ( and Chess overall ) needs Carlsen more than he needs it....that's how MASSIVE his impact has been!!

Probably. While he didn't mention it, classical chess places a HUGE amount of mental strain on you to find the best moves, simply by giving you so much time to use. That time that Magnus played out a near certain draw to a win was a genuine accomplishment for him, but it wasn't really chess, and it wasn't much fun either. There's only so many times you can do that before your brain snaps in half.

Number 1 takeaway I fully support: Is advancing the public interest in the game by changing the format and rules like has been done in tennis and other sports. Including adding shorter time limits. 1 minute bullet is a little fast for most audiences to follow but 3’ - 30’ is a range that most of us can follow live. Furthermore most of us play 30’ - 3’ games which they can identify with. Longer games do result in more quality moves, deeper calculations. For fans a game that provides each player more than an hour is not going to capture a following of large numbers of potential fans. This doesn’t require any changes in the basic rules. Stalemates and ties are a barrier to building a fan base but I don’t know how that would be addressed.

I completely agree with the popularization of Fischer random under classical time control. It would make for very dynamic games, and could also work especially well for a broadcast if there are a couple concurrent games to follow. I don't completely agree with entirely phasing out classical chess from elite games, but rather the classical games played should quickly descend into lower time controls after each game.

WCC classical format idea 💡 * 16 games * 2.5 hour time control with 30 minutes added at 40 moves and 3 seconds added per move at move 40. * a tie = champion retains the title (no speed games)

The GOAT 🐐 knows when someone is cheating because his brain is a mf computer. 2 years since he played a WC and he could win it with his eyes closed quite literally if he wanted to. Why on earth would he play these 3 or 4 hour games when it's much more fun for the players and the viewers when the time controls are much shorter. Which is obviously why he said he'd come back if the times were less in the classical games. Bro doesn't need the extra time and he gets bored sitting there waiting on his opponent to make a move. 💀 Long live the 🐐

Someone PLEASE ask him exactly what time controls and how many games would interest him in returning to the WC cycle. FIDE's standard time control? Norway Chess time controls? 90+30 with no additional time? He's had the same answer for ages now but no one has bothered to ask for more specific detail for how he wants the match to look??

@@Phurngirathaana Its not about adapting to him its about making chess more marketable. The main reason chess hasnt grown popular is because the game might go on for 7 long hours and still end in a draw. No one wants to sit and wait for half an hour just to see some european guy push a pawn one square.

Very interesting. When you have achieved the highest recognition and financial wealth in any field, what keeps you going is having fun with it. Magnus is a very mature competitor, also one of the most dominant player in anyfield ever. There is something to learn there

03:57 That's really a cool idea! Three Crowns: Classic (Fischer Random), Rapid & Blitz (Standard Chess). The fourth, of course (tradition is tradition), will be the old World Championship, but perhaps it would end up losing a bit of prestige if what the best players aspire to is to be the 960 king, leaving the old one for "opening tryhards"? I mean, today is only Magnus, but maybe if in 10 years a significant % of the ¿top 10-15? refuses to play it out of "boredom", it wouldn't seem crazy to me the lost of prestige. But hey, there's no need to give up anything, although the rise of a Fischer Random Championship with Classic TC is a breath of fresh air.

It's basically like fantasy football where you pick your own team based on performance stats, but it's for chess

Hey! Fantasy Chess, I assume, would be based off the fantasy football model as previously mentioned. In fantasy football, you choose a starting lineup of 11 players out of any players in the relevant league/competition and gain points for each out of the 11 players depending on how they perform (5 points for goals, 3 for assists, etc.) adding up to a total point tally to compare to other players. In chess, you would probably choose 4/5 players in a competition (or in a tour?) and gain points for wins, draws against significantly higher rated opponents as well as %accuracy.

I'm not a tournament player. just a life time hacker who loves the game. But one thing I've picked up on is how many of the top great players have all had issues with Fide. my only regret is as an Octogenarian I I don't have time to engross in tournaments etc. things that I wanted to do but life and family responsibilities came first. Que sera sera. I can still enjoy it herein cyber space. Thanks for sharing. ECF

Being alive during Magnus' reign is what it must have felt like for chess fans in the 60's and 70's during the reigns of absolute giants like Fischer and Karpov.

I agree on Fischer chess being slower and classical chess being rapid or blitz. Nobody would watch a 5 hours game in a championship match. But if you know it's rapid or blitz, then it gets exciting. I think he's right, the future of chess has to be that way...

The difference between world championship and other strong tournament is not the time control, but the 1-on-1 nature plus long preparation time before the world championship. Magnus probably feel that opponents were so well prepared for world championship , make the games mostly just draws. (not really true for last WC though)

I would love more explanation on what WCC format he thinks would be interesting enough to participate in. It feels like there's always too little information on this. Shorter time controls - yes, which ones, exactly? More games, ok, how many? Etc. Thx for the interview though.

Fischer Random: why not let the players place the five pieces NBQBN followed by KRK? Then randomness would be removed. Also, if any start position is unfair, it would thus be eliminated.

Fischer said that long ago like in 2006? Chess 960 was his idea. he was saying that even back then when he was active? The guy was super smart, that is why he is the real GOAT not Magnus.

I think WC should be decided by point accumulation of mixed format: Classical (1hr+40 move time control) for 40% of points, rapid: 20%, Blitz: 20, ches960: 20%. Where they play the shorter format last. For most ppl a 5hr game is too long to be watchable, you just watch hikaru or agad recap the game, but then there is no surprise element.

Sometimes he's cocky, but he has admitted before that he's not the GOAT yet. He has said he's not real impressed with Fischer, but he believes Kasparov is the GOAT and the MJ of chess. He mentioned it on Lex Fridmans podcast a year ago when they asked him who the GOAT was. He could have easily been dishonest and cocky and called himself the GOAT. He did say he needs more longevity to do it, and that he's trying to. Definitely not a cocky answer to that question. I know at other times he has been cocky. Basically said he has no current rivals, and that if you go below that then Hikaru is next, lol. I thought it was funny though.

Some of these questions are imho weird, bcs if you ask genious or someone who is devouted to smth, why he does what he does, its not for results itself, but really smth deep for activity, its like magnus not been understood, so these questions are asked imho
