His intuition obviously didn’t bring him to Qa8 first because it takes about 6 seconds to check “all of those variations”. He was checking other moves first and eventually came to Qa8

If first move is of white: 1)move e7kinght to f5, then move rook on e3 is mate. If first move is of black:1) if black queen goes to d4 then rooke3 is mate. 2)if black queen goes away anywhere from d4square then capture rook from e7knight and {capture black queen from white queen(if black queen capture c6knight) or move rook to e3 (if black queen doesn't capture c6knight)}.

@s.bkaradi884 What are you talking about? If you move Nf5 then Qd8+ so mate in 3 not 2. You need Qa8 first to make mate in 2...from there like Magnus said if Qd4 then Re3# if any other black move then it's either Nc5# or Nd6# depending on blacks move.

So basically black will have to move his queen or rook since the pawns are stuck as is the king. So moving the queen to a8 is just lining up a pin, so that after black moves a piece, you’ll get a discovered pin on the other piece when you move the b7 knight on your next move, and due to the pin, black can’t capture the knight on c5 or d6, whichever it moves to. And no matter what blacks first move is he can’t defend both c5 and d6.

If queen moves anywhere rather than d4 then it's knight checkmate and if queen moves to d4 then it's bishop - rook checkmate

The point is that the pawns and the king can't move so black has to reply with either a rook or a queen move. Queen A8 sets up to pin either the rook or the queen when giving check with the the knight on D6 or C5 so that the pinned piece cannot take the night, hence delivering checkmate. The only way for black to prevent that is to put one of the pieces on a square where it's not pinned once the knight moves and defends both checkmate squares of the knight. The only way to achieve that is to put the queen on D4. But that blocks an escape route for the king and rook E3 is mate. The pawn can't take the rook because the king is in double check from rook and bishop.

From White side Checkmate in two Rf3 X f4 sacrifing the roookk!!! Black king is double check therefore he have to take on Ke4 X Rf4 after that Rh5 move to f5 its a beautiful checkmate

I was able to find a mate in 3 in about 20-25 secs. Move to b5 discovered check, Rc4, Qxc4, Qxc4, Nbd6#! The mate in two is absolutely ridiculous, how on earth? Mad respect though, that’s why Magnus is the world champ!

Queen a3 is a mate in 2! After this white moves either rook e3, rook c3 or queen d3 depending on how black moves. I don't see how queen a8 is a mate in 2.

Why can't you just move the rook in h3 ? Then he has to move his pawn in f3 to cover the check of the bishop. Then you take his pawn with the bishop and it's a checkmate

Taking the pawn with the bishop would block the rook's view, so black would have Kd3.

studies like this are cool but contrived (and also honestly don't have much practical value). like carlsen said, you can pretty much eliminate any moves that are checks or captures because that would be straightforward for a mate in 2. and the move is often the one you'd be least likely to expect so moving some piece far away from the king even though you're delivering mate narrows it down to some queen moves. so Qa8 is the first move that comes to mind! i'm actually surprised carlsen didn't get it sooner but i'm sure he doesn't spend much time looking at studies like this one where the starting position is complete nonsense from a realistic standpoint
