The black route I tried has been upgraded to 8c+ since I tried it, but is still 8b to the first anchor.

New set of routes on the steepest section of the climbing wall. This vlog was shot and edited by Simon and is probably a bit different to my usual vlogs.
I will still make vlogs myself. This is just to produce more. I hope to make twice as many vlogs in 2019!

Nice to see Simon return! Notes to Simon: - 1min to 3:46 distinctly Simon editing and camera work. Your style comes through, but it may rub some climbers the wrong way (some may say it's flashy). Personally, I'm not bothered by it because you are essentially jazzing up a montage, and I think that's good. - 3:46 - 13:24 is gold. You film the climbing pretty well and I REALLY like how you occasionally ask Magnus what comes to your mind. I don't know if you had planned to ask him about his in between routine, but it was nice to hear. - 13:25 - 13:33 I like how you come in to the action, but after that I will say the extra camera movement is distracting. - 13:33-14:11 This is the extra movement I think you don't need. I can't speak for all of us, but I think the channel likes to see the climbing. It's like when Jackie Chan talks about how to film action; he says that the camera should be still so that the viewer can see the action, unlike in many American action films. - 14:18 - 14:38 - This is the perfect amount of movement to follow his climbing. Makes it easy to watch and doesn't distract. - 16:12 - Good hustle! Overall, I think you're a great cinematographer, editor, and cameraman, but seeing as now you're filming a bit of skilled action I'd like to see what you do with the videos in the future.

Personally I like Magnus’ choice of music more, it seemed a bit more relaxed. As for the actual filming, I’d like to see less of those shots of the whole wall while he climbs, it doesn’t feel like we can see his climbing process as well. Great editing, I’m excited to see more!

Hey guys! First of all, nice vid. If I may, I'd like to give a little bit of feedback about the new format: - The climbing looks great. Can't wait for Simon to get into the flow and film like a climbing geek, cause I'm addicted, but in the meantime stuff like the double camera setup was brilliant and it brings great rhythm in the edit. - The interviews, the drone shots, all of that is still top quality really! It feels right, it feels familiar. - I'd say go easy on the B-roll close ups and the flashy effects. There's this insert of a green hold at the beginning for instance: why? We don't care about the hold, it's not a good looking shot, it's just a videographer's habit to put an insert there. Same for the "chalk" transition. It's a bit tacky. There are a few examples throughout the vid. I don't mean to be rude, but the fact that Magnus' channel was never trying to be gratuitously flashy is one of itsbiggest strength. I feel you should maintain that specificity, it's also part of your brand. - Also, try to do a bit of mixing on the sound. For a while around 6.30 there's this loud, high pitch whistle on the track and it could have easily been edited out. It's not much but audio triggers are a big thing for me, and this one hit hard. - Finally, I can't wait to see how much more room there is for content research as opposed to just Magnus having to grind the post-prod. I'm sure you guys will rock this!

I quite enjoyed the close ups and transitions. Especially the chalk part - for a climber it sort of lights this familiar fire inside of you that tells you its "go time"

Justin Y thanks for superb feedback! I will need to adapt my style to suit Magnus’ style and what the audience want/expect. Filming climbing is something new for me, but I know we’ll make it work really well in the coming time. There wasn’t a place I could stand throughout the entirety of the climbs which gave me a nice angle, so I had to use a B camera (static shot) to cover the time I used to run up/down the stairs. Again, thanks!

I liked the music better in the vlogs by Magnus, but thats youst personal preference. Also the ever debate between wanting to see the climber, the next hold, the feet and foot placement, simultaneously wanting to see the smal holds closer, angle of the wall etc. Also is 13:24 a onsight, didn't Magnus said he tested it earlier? More Vlogs is good, Love it

Hey Magnus, before I get to my question I just want to tell you how inspirational you truly are. So thank you for the effort you put in into this community. Question: How often is maintenance work done on the big walls you have in your gym? This might sound a bit naive of me but what I can see, the wall itself is made off planks of wood. These planks peeling off the main framework is my biggest fear!

I was disappointed that Magnus' feet were cut out of the shot at multiple points while he was climbing. I'd like to see the footwork and placement. Video was also very shaky. I feel like the same shots could have been achieved having a tripod set up, but seeing as I don't know what goes on behind the scenes, it may have been necessary to hold the camera for the majority of the time. Coloring/lighting looked great.

Awesome video! The camera work was awesome. Could tell that a lot must go into one person recording all those angles. The far away shots were very cool to give a perspective of how big the wall is but I think they should be used sparingly (maybe when he is resting) and use primarily the closer angles so that you can see the moves easier. Editing was top notch. Keep up the awesome work :)

Cool! It gives a whole new look and fresh feel to the vlog, really like the variety. As a criticism: i would like to have more close-up climbing scenes so that you can feel more with the climber and see the difficulty of the route. In this vid it was a bit too much distance, i wouln't see the difference between an 8b or 7a route. I know it's thats not easy to film in lead climbing, but maybe it's possible somehow. Anyway, psyched to see more vlogs, I'm sure it'll get better with time anyways. Keep it up! Btw wish you a nice flight, maybe this time even with the luggage arriving😱😱😉

13:25 - isn't that 8a incorrectly labeled as onsight? Anyway, it seems like Simon is bringing a fresh perspective, like asking you about your routine, or lack thereof, between climbs. This should be an opportunity to get new insight into Magnus and what it takes to be a world-class climber and what that life is like.

Glad to see you're trying new things with shooting and editing. My only note would be that some angles and distances mean I can't see clearly what Magnus is climbing, so I can't look at the holds, anticipate the moves, think about the technique. How can the composition and editing should support the journey of the climb, rather than just be a way to add in variety? It's harder to do without other climbers commenting, but seems like a cool filming problem to solve, especially with such high climbs. Looking forward to more.

With all the filming you are doing i would say a good drone would be in place. Just thinking about elevation differance and all the outdoor climbing you do. Awesome video as Always

the camera work on the last route was the best among the three routes imo. First route was a bit too shaky and second route had a bit too few close-ups. Though, in general, I like that there are more wide shots in your videos in contrast to the erickarlsson/boulderingbobat ones.

Cool video, good to see that you are trying something different. Welcome Simon. 😊 I must say though I found it hard to follow as a climber. I would like to see what you are doing and have an idea of what you are going to do. And that was really hard in these camera positions. Also if you jump out of the frame or if you are switching from super close to super far and back it does not make for pleasant viewing. At least in my opinion. I do like the interaction with Simon and the viewers. Keep at it, looking forward to the next videos. Good to have Simon on board.

I'd strongly suggest, not asking your audience for advice on video editing. Considering they are not video editors. The best video editors influence is hardly noticed by the average viewer. By that I mean. Don't point it out. Sure you can ask them if they like the style but I see plenty of people commenting on shot angles and pacing and composition when really they have no place in choosing those things. Let your editor flare his individual style and people will love it. Take the focus away from behind the scenes, let the magic be magic ;) big fan btw!
