Thanks so much for posting this. I bought the mag sphere a few months ago and am very happy with it. Way less cumbersome than Gary Fong's sphere which worked great but was a bit awkward to use. I think the bounce will be a great addition to my wedding gear and your explanation of when to use each piece was very helpful. I just put it in my shopping cart. This is literally the first I have heard it.

@adam_sorber

I see plenty of difference in the Umbrella/MagBounce comparison--soft, blending lines from the umbrella and a significantly harder, more defined lines from the MagBounce. I'd be curious to see a similar side-by-side comparison of MagBounce vs bare flash. Outdoors at 8 feet, I'd be willing to bet those would look a LOT more similar than the MagBounce/umbrella comparison. Not hating on the MagSphere or MagBounce, mind you--they're great modifiers. But I keep hearing people talk about how great they are for replacing umbrellas outside, and frankly, the examples I've seen don't support that (incidentally, neither does physics...). If you don't have walls to bounce light, once you get more than a few feet away from your subject, you're going to get results that are pretty much identical to a bare bulb zoomed wide, all while wasting the light that's being diffused away from your subject.

I am inclined to agree with you Adam. I too felt that there was an obvious difference between Umbrella/MagBounce comparison, the light was simply more flattering using the umbrella with much nicer transition. However, I do see the possibilities of the MagSphere, especially if shooting events by myself, and by that I mean corporate walk around gigs for example. If I am shooting a wedding its always with an assistant, and if I am hiring an assistant, he's gonna be carrying a proper modifier.
@ididntasktobehere

I think the comparison between the mag product and the umbrella was that it gives basically the same result for less weight/hassle and most likely less money.
@moSahl
@moSahl 7 жыл бұрын
Certainty less weight and hassle. Possibly cheaper too if you don't hire an assistant, but I can't agree that it delivers better results than an umbrella. The umbrella is simply a much larger light source.
@PhilDrinkwaterUK
@PhilDrinkwaterUK 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I was interested to see what the system does but this video is a sales too to sell to people who don't understand lighting. That's a very poor sell. I also noted with the sphere, they compared with the light bouncing up not bouncing back. I would be very wary. Right now these seem like a waste of money.

Very informative video. I recently switched to your excellent Mag Mod system. I have traditionally used a speed light with a small Velcro type soft box mounted on a flash bracket to shoot events. Is there still an advantage to mount the Magmod sphere or bounce on a flash bracket or are they perfectly good mounted on the camera's hot shoe? If I no longer need the flash mounted on a flash bracket with the TTL cable that would be fine by me! Thanks!
@MagnetMod
@MagnetMod 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stan, by putting your flash on a bracket you are providing a little bit of direction to your light - however many MagMod users report using the MagSphere or MagBounce on camera and getting great results. For example, Trevor Dayley, loves to use the MagBounce on camera during event/reception coverage as seen in this video.

Can we put or rather squeeze in the sphere to the Magbounce so that the light becomes softer. I hate those sudden jump of shadows and would love a better transition from light to dark
@jasonbodden8816
@jasonbodden8816 Жыл бұрын
It won't become softer. Softness of light is solely the result of the size of your light source in relation to your subject. Even if you could squeeze the MagSphere into the MagBounce the light source will still remain small. It might be more diffuse but not softer.

@MagnetMod
@MagnetMod 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, you could use two MagSpheres as well but you'll have to use a higher flash power. Since the MagSphere is omni-directional that light will leave the modifier is all directions, however with the MagBounce it will be more efficiently sending the light in the direction you want it. Hope that helps.

Hi Selva - soft light comes from a bigger light source. But the MagSphere will help the transition on the edges and the MagBounce will help with the spread of the light. If you are shooting in larger rooms, I tend to use the MagBounce, in smaller or medium size rooms the MagSphere is wonderful.

Carey, great question! The MagBounce is designed to totally scatter and bounce your light forward from the flash. Using a MagGrid with the MagBounce would only reduce your usable light coming out of your flash, so we don't recommend using these two together.
