Mahalia Jackson performing "Elijah Rock'" at the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival. Her show-stopping performance during the 70th birthday tribute to Louis Armstrong was a moving finale to the star-studded concert event. This is quite likely the last filmed performance of Jackson, who passed away in January 1972.
This performance is from the original film "Louis Armstrong at Newport" produced and directed by George Wein and Sid Stiber. The original, first-generation 16mm film footage was transferred to high definition in 2008. Edited versions of the film, presented under the title "Good Evening Ev'rybody: In Celebration of Louis Armstrong," have aired on PBS, BBC, and other broadcasters worldwide, and a feature-length version was distributed on DVD.

Notice Mahalia Jackson singing GOSPEL MUSIC at a Jazz Festival. This women NEVER compromised her singing for the Lord no matter were or with who. Any secular artist that sung with her sung GOSPEL. I wish there was 1 gospel artist today that could pick up her mantle.

Myself included! Grew up on her angelic voice from my mom's CDs! Still got them. Very grateful to have such a saint sing a song with my name in it and preaching the holy word through song!

Yes,Sir my grandson name is Elijah,that name is powerful.I sang this song to my grandson All the time!!!!!!! Elijah was a powerful prophet in the bible..Elijah called on our God it rained down fire. ...The Bible states that Elijah didn't die,he walked or was taken into heaven....

I sang this song to my son, Elijah since he was born. I only wished I could have sung it with half the voice that Mahalia had!! Her vocals were truly a gift from God

Correction on the pianist. Her name is Gwendolyn Cooper Lightner and she is my mother. She was her pianist off and on for years, mainly when she’d come to LA and permanently for the last four years of her life after Ms Falls retired.

I saw the movie on Lifetime last night and she was a trailblazer!! God used her gift in a powerful way!! God sent His Word through her on the world's biggest stages. She spread the message of the Gospel everywhere and you feel The Holy Spirit move in her songs!! She said that she wasn't singing anything other than Gospel and she gave all the glory to God for her amazing gift. I'm glad I had the chance to see that movie because it gave me insight on how amazing she was.

If anyone was an ear shot of her singing i believe they got healings both spiritually and physically, Evil spirits were cast out then opening the listeners hearts to salvation as well. I think she was spiritually ministered to during her singing bc her eyes were closed as if spiritually in a heavenly dimension so her heart was in accordance with those prayers around her as well.as a coduent to JC, Angels and maybe G-d too. Visualizing the peoples needs worries and home and healings to them

Never heard about her until I seen the preview of the lifetime movie and just from her presence rn seeing her for the first time I could tell she was a anointed woman with a powerful voice beautiful presence also beautiful as well and her voice tells the story and not to mention my favorite actor and singer is playing her in the movie so I'm glad to hear and see something new about someone I didn't know about great history

Mahalia Jackson was a beast and the precursor to the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and both were precursor to the greatest singer of all time the late great Whitney Houston. May all three Rest In Peace knowing their great voices will continue to be heard as long as this earth has ears to hear.

I love Whitney but lol WHAT?!. Whitney was the greatest pop/soul singer and easily one of the best of her generation but the greatest of all time? LMAO that would mean the greatest in EVERY genre and she didn't delve into a lot of other genres. She is absolutely not the best in Jazz, Blues,Funk, Rock, Opera, Soul, or Broadway. As for gospel, well, plenty stand toe to toe with her. She was definitely anointed though.

However, Black Americans have influenced every facet of American music and produced way too many vocalists to deem just one the greatest. Greater in Jazz than Ella, Sarah Vaughan and Lady Day? Better than Leontyne price, Jessye Norman and Marian Anderson in Opera? The Blues of Dinah Washington, Etta James and Nina Simone? Absolutely not. I can respect your opinion that you think she's the greatest of all time but nah.

Whitney’s cousin Leotyne Price called her the greatest, LA Reid has called her the greatest, Clive Davis has, Anita Baker has, Celine Dion has, Elton John has, Babyface has, Yolanda Adams has,Kim Burrell has and Micheal Jackson who I believe to be the greatest entertainer of all time said “she is the only person he has heard past or present who could sing the phone book and make it sound great”. By 1970 Mildred Falls and Mahalia had parted company. That is actually Louise Weaver on piano. Their styles are a bit different.

Okay everybody here's the deal. When she first started the concert her wig didn't look like that. But she's so animated that by the time this song came around she shook all the curls loose. Trust me I know this for a fact!
