I sat at the feet (literally) of this 'greatest band that ever was' at Council Rock High School in Buck's County PA and at the Spectrum shortly after.. My life changed in an hour of creative enlightenment.. As a drummer my future was written in stone and remains so.. The venues are shut and the industry decimated such potential within ten years of this show.. These recordings and videos are to me more precious than words could convey.. Thank you for the joy and goosebumps.

THANK YOU!! Saw this tour at Yale (Woolsey Hall) a few weeks later. Mind blowing, still gives me goose bumps. They played three encores and John came out to say "we are very sorry, Billy has cramped and we have to stop". And isn't it amazing that they start with Birds of Fire at a FASTER tempo than the recoring?!

Cobham’s bass drum sounds like solid heads on both sides. Just like Simon Phillips later. The snare is really tight and snappy
@uberbeast113
@uberbeast113 8 ай бұрын
Yeh that snare makes a good clatter, really rings out when he's playing close to the rim. those gongs at the beginning man...in a universe of their own with the way they are pitched. That gong intro emanates such profound stillness, it's downright intimidating when he kicks in with that ferocity

Edgar, Mahavishnu was the greatest representative of jazz rock in the 70s. Eleventh House, Tony Williams Lifetime, most of the Return To Forever albums, Jean Luk Ponty, Passport, Colosseum Second.......were bands that belonged to to this current. Then, around the middle of the 70s, someone decided to call everything fusion. I always found different things. Okay, they're just labels...but in my time that's how they were known.

Well, that was astonishing. The band was presumably deep in their hating each other phase by this time, as they were to disband within a month. The ferocity of this performance feels (with the benefit of hindsight) both valedictory and angry. P S The sound quality is initially messy but improves within a few minutes.

Like many bands with incredible talents they were at their peak the first year they toured -late'71 -mid '72. At this date, it is clear (to me, at least) that they need new material and a very different direction.

Listening to the dance of maya, seeing where this version will take me. My plan is to listen to every version available on the internet. Counting through the middle section of the keyboard (rhodes) and the violin duel. Do any of you count through this tune? 20/8

I have nearly 100 Mahavishnu shows from 1971-75 and, at the last count, 33 versions of The Dance Of Maya. The one from Ebbets Field in Denver from April 1973 is pretty spectacular.
