I've heard about dozen recordings of these songs and recently encountered this one. It's incredible on every level. The soloists are remarkably sensitive to the text and the orchestra is yet another soloist with so much to say. I love it all! Thank you for posting!

My favorite commercial recording of this music. Wyn Morris was wonderful, wonderful conductor -- loved his Mahler 8th recording...

As far as I know, this was the first full-scale recording of extended selections from the Wunderhorn collection. I grabbed it when it came out, while I was still in high school, thrilled by the discovery of the music and by the performances (Baker was already and known -- and beloved -- quantity, while Evans was just making his mark in the U.S. with his performances in the overdue revival of "Falstaff" at the Met, a role in which he remains peerless). There have been many distinguished recordings since then (Ludwig/Berry/Bernstein comes to mind), but this one, which I have just heard again for this first time in perhaps 40 years, is hugely special, both in the clarity and depth of the singing and in the phrasing and textures of the orchestra. What a joy to rediscover it -- thanks!

this was the first recording i bought all those years back. i have never heared it bettered since.

Bravo. First time I heard a fragment of this recording, I thought that singer is Bryn Terfel. But Evans is better.
