The recent buzz around this symphony because of the new Maestro movie had me digging through hours of footage. I tried to combine a variety of styles and conductors. I hope you enjoy!

The orchestra in mr Haitinks performance is not the Concertgebouw but the Rotterdam Philharmonic . This concert was held at Rotterdams concert hall "de Doelen".

Santa Cruz Symphony, a small towm symphony is shockingly good under Stewart! That soprano soaring over the chorus. Spectacular!

That was a great selection, thank you. My favourite, yes it's hard to choose, is still the Gustavo Dudamel version with the Venezuelan symphony orchestra at the 2011 BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, London. An incredibly emotional performance, and with that incredible organ in the RAH, the climax positively thunders! I must sit down and listen to some more recordings - they all have merit.

@@tomjamrose283 I agree with you, and yes, it was surprising that Dudamel was not included on this list. I guess everybody has their favourites , and on social media platforms like these we can agree or disagree. It's all about personal choice. Just a pity some people take opinions too far, and theirs is the only one that matters. :)

The final few minutes may be able to overcome the RAH but that cave (sorry hall) certainly destroys the first "arise" by the chorus in any performance.

Haitink/Concertgebouw was the reason I fell in love with this symphony. I have since found myself listening more to Dudamel/Venezuela, if for no other reason than that it is easier to find on KZfaq. Still brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for this. The ones that don't feature the organ prominently are lost on me.

I was in the chorus for this remarkable piece twice. Once with Bernstein at Lincoln Center and again with the San Diego Symphony. This entire work is magnificent. How I would have liked to have know Mahler.

For me it's definitely Seiji Ozawa because of his excellent ritardando before "Auferstehen". Basically, the tempo is kept rather fast, but this does not harm the expression, because the tension is well maintained due to the perfect ritardando and the subsequent appropriate tempo. Who is also great is Alan Gilbert with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, who also make the ending super expressive and yet compact. I can also highly recommend it ;)

The Ozawa was something else, the Chorus were so on point, so tight and powerful, almost Mormon Tabernacle in their power.

Just wonderful. This is music which is almost beyond us. I first fell for Simon Rattle and the CBSO. So many of these videos are sublime. I love the all-embracing hugging of the entire world with their arms. Thank-you.

I agree, Ozawa’s is the best. The “Auferstehen” segment is the true climax of the symphony, and he gives it great power.

Ozawa, Haitink, Chailly, Alsop have great insights and real personality. Some of the others seem to think that cymbal crashes and choir high notes, or just a fast, zippy Himmelfahrt do the work justice. Bernstein is in a class of his own, a must hear albeit not the last word on the piece though. I’ve heard Mehta in the work, possibly his favourite symphony. It was totally unshowy and absolutely enthralling.

Yes. However, people may be interested to know that not all 'cymbal crashes' are created equal. When well played with a great pair of cymbals, it can have its own special magic. The difference being a cymbal crash that "clanks" and "dies away" quickly as opposed to a cymbal crash that sustains a sonic "bloom" that releases a "million" overtones over the orchestra sound!

Haha, very funny. Orchestras used to have a gala event where if you gave a large donation they would let you conduct something. The orchestra was so good that they could play a difficult piece without a conductor. Bradley Cooper reminds me of that. I've also seen conductors so bad that the orchestra would ignore them and still put out a good perf. You got me. I was expecting Solti or Muti or someone as the last conductor.

Bernstein, of course, in a league of his own. Mark Bartley also impresses me, with his confident, solid command of things. Two totally different conductors, stylistically, yet each of them clearly in control of this awesome masterwork.

the Ozawa is wonderful, lovely to hear Battle's voice shining at the top. I have the Chailly Bluray set which I think is more or less definitive for the cycle (except the absent #3) and I adore him so Chailly would be my pick of the more recent recordings (along with Rattle/BPO that is on Berlin Digital Concert Hall). I have to say the Bernstein never fails to move me deeply (he is also a conductor I utterly adore) as the choral singing is just so passionate and intense. I do like that the "Bradly Cooper" version has a very well recorded organ.

Great selection. Among these performances, my favourite is the one directed by Ozawa. By the way, how could you miss Maestro Abbado's interpretations of the opera with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, especially the 2023 performance?

I'd say my 2 favorites were Fischer at the beginning because he really adds some variety to the tempi of it. And also, of course, Bernstein is just fun to watch conduct. He really milks it for what it's worth. But the biggest shocker has got to be Daniel Stewart with the Santa Cruz Symphony. A big time honorable mention for that one.

For sheer enthusiasm my favorite is Bernstein. Have the complete DVD of it. Lost count of how many times i have watched it. It was also the first Mahler symphony I listened to.

Many stirring performances - though a shame there is no footage of a younger Mehta conducting. Gergiev saddens me - such great fire in his eyes, but as we now know, such ice in his heart. Of course, once one see's Lenny's performance, the rest suddenly fade from view, but who among us could say that "between me and Leonard Bernstein, I am a more creatively dynamic person...")?

The recording with Hsitink is not with the Concertgebouw orchestra. This concert is a remembrance concert with the Rotterdam Philharmonic in de Doelen in Rotterdam. Haitink conducted is his younger days sometimes the Rotterdam Philharmonic.

This is a wonderful compilation of the final few minutes of Mahler's symphony #2. For people who may not be familiar with Mahler's music, I hope it will stimulate their interest to explore Mahler. Thank you for this wonderful collection. I revered Bernstein. He composed more than music for West Side Story . His Candide, Mass in honor of JFK, the Kaddish, in my view are under-appreciated. As for the movie and Bradley Cooper impersonating Bernstein, I was unable to accept the facade. Prosthetics and waving hands to a beat, was almost unbearable to watch. I believe that Bernstein would not have been pleased to see a facsimile of himself recreated. The clip of Seiji Ozawa conducting a Japanese orchestra and chorus in Japan brought me to tears. Consider if you will , that a Japanese chorus was singing in German, the orchestra players were all Asian, playing the music written by a German of Jewish origin, this magnificent piece that during Nazi years was prohibited to be performed.

Long time since I've seen Kaplan's conducting - was this the first time he conducted it? He improved considerably as he got to know the orchestras and choirs. I saw one of his LSO performances in the mid 1980s and rumour was that the first time they did it largely by ignoring him, but later on really worked with him. No questioning his love for Mahler 2 - he was more than just a curiosity. Thanks for this side-by-side view; reminds me of how idiosyncratic some can be. Like others, I find it hard to get past Dudamel at the Proms (conspicuously absent here) - the whole performance is just magnificent - and from youth orchestra and choir, quite remarkable! (ps Benjamin Zander channeling some inner Paul Tortelier?) Thank you!

How much faster should "Was du geschlagen" be compared with what goes before and after? In some of these the speed difference is jarring with this sudden rush then sudden slowdown after. In others the transitions are much more smooth.

I've sung in the chorus for this with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra twice, once with Inbal and once with Mehta. Mehta (without score) far outshone Inbal in not only the finale, but the entire symphony. Only wish I could have sung it under Lenny!

Played this with Mehta with the MSO in the 70s. It was an electrifying performance. As usual with Zubin, there was little rehearsal so very exciting... Don't get me started on Mehta "without score"...

Not sure Gergiev's timing was consistent compared to everyone else, very weird interpretation IMO. I like how Aslop was keeping an eye on the score. The sound of Bernstein wasn't great but they followed him perfectly compared to Cooper LOL

A great compilation. I was expecting the last one to actually be allowed to finish this magnificent symphony. Was Bradley Cooper actually conducting? I saw a You Tube recently which suggests the Leader of the Orchestra played a more significant rôle.

Bradley Cooper did conduct in the film, however, it was under the supervision of Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Kaplan loves the music. But he's following the performers, they aren't following him. His various downbeats come *after* the notes have sounded.

@@MrMayAllDay I had the same thought! I actually saw Kaplan conduct this at the New York Philharmonic in 2008. It was impossible to tell for sure from my balcony seat, but I had the thought that night that the musicians might be deliberately sabotaging him because they didn't want to work with him. (There was an online controversy about it afterward.) To me, Cooper's few minutes look more like a parody and had me thinking I might prefer Bugs Bunny.

Are the images and the sound out of sync at the performance with Gilbert Kaplan or is he really such a bad conductor, always behind the orchestra? I know, he's the entrepreneur who dedicated his life to Mahler 2, but knowing that he has conducted the best orchestras around the world I really can't see from this video why anyone should invite him. But it happened (and does still happen?)

$$$$$ speaks volumes - he is a rich charlatan and the performance in his VPO recording is on autopilot. have you seen Tar? the film has an extended joke at his expense (Eliot Kaplan the conductor Lydia/Linda tackles to the ground).

Let's be reasonable and positive and not snobby. Kaplan never pretended to be more than an amateur (but the performance here is not BAD). What a positive that he loved Mahler, and this symphony in particular... Sure, he had the means to hire orchestras to exhibit his passion. There should be more of that passion from "amateurs". Good luck to him!

@@noeldaniel1266 Hi and thanks for your comment. Fair enough. A side in me agrees with you. The other side is frustrated about how money can buy anything. I don't have anything against amateurs who love music passionately. But when I see how many talented musicians will never get the chance to perform under such circumstances like those where Kaplan is able to simply buy himself into, I find it somewhat disgusting. I wouldn't say anything if Kaplan had done it once, but the fact that he's touring the world and conducts the best orchestras, simply because he's able to pay for it, while really gifted, educated and professional musicians won't ever get these opportunities, that makes me sick, can't help it.

I thought the same thing for sure. However, I really think his beats are just not in line with his ensemble because it lines up by the end. Very odd style indeed.

I tip my hat off to the youth orchestras, and high schoolers, for tackling Mahler 2 like a pro, is definitely not an easy feat. The third one is very lacking the magic compared to the others and is terrible. Chailly nailed the balance between the orchestra and the choral but the phrases are almost perfect, almost. Gergiev is also very good, but when they get to the peak, didn't blow my mind. Vàsquez surprised me. But Bernstein will always be the king of the Malher finale, the perfect phrasing that Chailly almost nailed was here and it felt like a story is unfolding rather than a bunch of epic high notes and brass. Of course, Bradley made the rest trash and absolutely nailed the perfect performance of mankind that aliens thought Earth was heaven when this was playing. That's my take. I think this finale is the hardest to nail the phrasing while not sounding overly tedious or any of that sort. So hats off to all the orchestras who attempted this Symphony.
