Considering that "The President's Own" is the nation's oldest professional musical organization, and their performances bear that out...great job, United States Marine Band! Semper Fi!!!!

@@PumilateVFX Quality of overall sound is often greatly impacted by both the acoustics of the venue and the audio recording setup. There are many recordings of great orchestras performing masterpieces that have poor overall sound.

Vegas0Drew when I was in the Band, I played Hovhaness’ very slow-moving Symphony 29 at a recital. At the reception, an elderly lady remarked that it must’ve been a good performance because she didn’t fall asleep!

Retired (in 2014) Marine Band clarinetist here... the Santa in the front is a longtime (many years!) fan of the Band; he comes to most concerts, and always sits right there. Trust me, he is not sleeping; he's absorbing.

One cracked note kept the Trombonist's performance from being the best I've heard! His one fallible moment reminds us that we are all imperfect humans.

@@LyleFrancisDelp I have the William Schaefer arrangement but it is not the whole movement, I wish I could a hold of Donald Patterson's arrangement of the Schaefer transcription which is the whole movment but to my knowledge the Marine band rarely lends out its transcriptions, I so with this was available I would play it with my professional wind ensemble in a heart beat.

Yes. He is a regular at Marine Band concerts…a true loyal attendee. Just because his eyes are closed does not mean he is asleep. I often close my eyes at live concerts to take in the music.

It’s one of the top military band positions in the country. “The President’s Own” designation is a traditional name for the ensemble, not really signifying ownership to one particular President but rather serving all of the President’s. The musicians in groups like this one are all elite. The audition process is similar to top level orchestra positions. The personnel at all levels of this ensemble are like anyone else in regard to personal opinions, though I would say they skew a bit more to the left.

The US Marine Band serves the Office or the presidency and has had the title "The President's Own" since it was given by Thomas Jefferson.

@@LyleFrancisDelp So it's a formal designation with no actual content. The president - any president - need not not be even conscious of its existence much less attend a performance.

dorfman jones Um...what? As I said, the Marine Band was given the title “The President’s Own” by Thomas Jefferson, who was a musician of note. The band has performed at every inauguration ceremony since then and it’s primary mission is musical support of the White House. The president hears the group quite often.
