Another idea is to take it loose at the lever end and slide a 13/16" spark plug socket with a 13/16" hex top on it, down the cable to tighten it in the cylinder head or cylinder as in this case, and tighten or loosen it. This works well in a new installation, as the set screw never ends up in a place where you can tighten it during installation with an open end wrench. Then just slide the socket off the cable, and attach it and adjust it at the lever.

Thanks! Ya I had one come loose one time on my 83 Maico 490 and I had to take the cable out and the bolt to retighten it in the woods. Then those are a pain to get back in, especailly if they're frayed in any way on the end. So I did this so I wouldn't have that problem again and can just tighten it without any problems.

DO you ever have problem with your spark plug getting fouled up or carbon deposits on it. My Kx500 seams to suffer from carbon build up on the plug electrode, think it might be making it harder to start?

I had some issues time back on my Maico 490 83 before I rebuilt it. It was due to bad crank seal. However, it can also occur due to oil mix, some oils are better than others and sometimes you have to find the right plug. jetting is also an issue. Hard to start though depends on the bike and is subjective on big bores. Big bores need a lot of gas and sometimes need a lot of spin that they may not be getting and that could be the root cause.

tobyeo Thanks for you reply. I put new crank seals in when I restored it. I'll have a look into different oil mixes, jetting, and different heat range spark plugs. Might even just need more run time with the bike to get used to the way it behaves in different conditions. Thanks again.
