To me it's impressive that you can compare ar15 to ar10 performance with the grendel
@crashdsnowman1
@crashdsnowman1 Жыл бұрын
That is because it's exaggerated. During the introduction test at Blackwater they compared the sleekest match bullet to a Mk118 military bullet for long distance then compare a 144gr 6.5 bullet going super slow to the same MK118 to shoot through glass.

With hundreds of samples that include travel distance, bullet weight, distance to the animal, we're seeing somewhere around a 60-68% DRT rate with 6.5 Grendel on deer. Another 25% don't make it more than 25 yards. No real difference between most other common deer cartridges, but recoil is very light, fits in the AR15, lower working pressure than most others besides the .30-30 Win.

been my go to deer rifle now going into my 3rd season with it. Was using the 123gn sst at first and had good luck with it just inconsistent pass throughs, Ive yet had the need to track one but if I did Id prefer an exit wound for a good blood trail. I have since switched to the federal 120gn fusion and that thing is nasty. Ive taken 5 deer with the Grendel over the past two seasons with the closet being 60yds and out to 225yds. Everyone was drt except the one at 60yds he made it about 25yds from where he was hit, never lost sight. Awesome cartridge for a young shooter or anyone who don't like the recoil. Ive always used a 270win but now im not stepping foot in the woods with out my Grendel. Total weight even with a 4-14x primary arms orion acss scope and 15rd mag is 7.9lbs very handy little rifle. Using a 16" barrel on the deer rifle but I do have another 18" Grendel but its almost 10lbs its actually got this barrel in the video faxon match series gunner profile not the heavy fluted. the 16" is a sub 1.5moa Anderson barrel and that's on a bad day

Great to see you do a video on the Grendel John. It's a very easy cartridge to shoot, load for, find affordable ammo for, quality components for, and tons of bullet selection. I never thought this would happen, but I found myself shooting my .260 Rem much less and Grendel more and more. Factory ammo and that it fits in the AR15 are the biggest factors, in addition to ease of high hit probability with minimal effort. I'm losing track of how many of them I have now, with no real plans for ever building a .223 Rem/5.56 AR again, and I like 5.56 a lot.

Love my 6.5 Grendel 20" SS barrel, it's nice to have that kind of ballistic and the low recoil , i love that i can switch my upper and have a different shorter rifle for plinking or tactical use .. the Grendel is not the cheapest round to run for plinking so switching to a 9mm or 233/5.56 upper/BCG takes care of that .. can't do that with the AR10 platform

I have been reading up on 6.5 Grendel the last little while. I think, in addition to a match rifle, (ignoring cost and logistics) it would be a good alternative for a 5-800 yard rifle (DMR, more or less) as it is arguably easier to put rounds on target quickly at both ends of that spectrum when compared to .308.
@LRRPFco52
@LRRPFco52 7 жыл бұрын
That's my experience seeing the side-by-side over several years running DM Courses. You get handling and recoil more like a .223, with retained energy more like a .308, with less wind drift than either in the gas guns.

A 6.5 is in my future - I'll be interested to see your experience. I see the Grendel as adding capability to my AR lower - it's a far better companion for hunting coyotes in the Great Basin deserts. It gives me a harder hit at greater range, but without the overkill of a .308 or Creedmore.

I built out a Grendel upper a while back specifically to learn long-range shooting. As you mentioned the ballistics are similar to .308 but it's less expensive to shoot (or it is for me). I'm not gonna be competitive at a match against 6.5 CMs or Lapuas or 300 win mags, but that's not the point for me - I just wanted a platform to start learning long range shooting. The smaller/lighter bullets may make for less obvious bullet-trace. At my altitude it's hard to see except in the winter months.

I see the Grendel as a fun cartridge, not the baddest ass available but being able to swap uppers and a bolt and go back to 223 or 300 BLK is where it's real advantage is. I think it is a far superior hunting round over 223 due to bullet weight and remaining energy but still in a neat package. I wouldn't mind having one for a rainy day.

Thanks for the video. Lot of good info, but for the average shooter, the working stiff, the simple cost of ammo is staggering. 6.5 creedmore costs 3 times more expensive as the 6.5 grendel. That was my only concern when I purchased my 6.5 grendel upper. The only regret is that I opted for the 24" bull barrel that makes the rifle about 12 lbs, which makes it too heavy for hunting

I have a 20" old style, (5.56 chamber, non 5R rifling. 1/8 twist.) heavy fluted faxon barrel. All good parts in the build, nothing super expensive but quality parts. Mill spec upper and lower. Decent but not expensive scope (Bushnell AR scope 3 to 14 power) and with IMI 77gr otm I can do .6 MOA 5 shot groups. The barrel doesnt seem to string shots or change POA much at all from cold to hot.. granted I dont shoot till it's crazy hot but i've gotten it pretty warm a couple times. I plan on using this barrel for my 6.5 build.

I have 2 Grendel AR's and a howa bolt action Grendel. If you're shooting targets, a 6.5 Grendel is way cheaper to shoot than 308. Especially if you reload. Low recoil means you can put 5 shots on a target faster than 2 for a 308. I've shot 85-129 gr bullets in my grendels. All accurate. I also have 3 6.5 creedmoors. Next is going to be a 6.5-06. 143 gr bullet at 3000fps. Semper Fi.

6.5 Grendel is like a 250 Savage with way better BCs that fits inside an AR15. While mv isn't super high with the 123gr, retained speed is, to the point that a 10.5"-11.5" Grendel smokes a 20" .30-30 Winchester and has more energy at 400yds than the .30-30/150gr RN at 200yds. For any shooter, it is very easy to hit things, and see yourself hit things with it.

Alexander Arms specifically developed the 6.5 Grendel as a practical 800m. (1/2-mi.) gun-&-cartridge, with utility out to 1000-1200m. with the proper bullet/powder combination. I have seen videos of their guns/loads at 1200m; definitely usable at 1200 meters (although if you're hunting decent-sized deer at 1200m. the terminal ballistics are such that you *really* need to do your part - same for sniping, obviously, at 1200m.). Also, if I'm recalling correctly, their 6.5 Grendel ARs have a *slightly* larger bolt to help with that thinness issue you mentioned; obviously that means that if want to be able to swap back and forth, 6.5-to-5.56, you need to be using AA's 5.56 bolt, so that could be a consideration. Not to mention that *that* bolt is *not* any kind of 'drop-in' part in your AR. Also, AA's ammo is carefully made to maximize the usability of their cartridge; I have yet to see/hear complaints about AA's ammo - except for price, as it is a bit 'spendy' (although nowadays you can spend almost $2/round for 'Premium ammo'!). One of their loads is a 130-grainer with excellent ballistics, especially for retained-energy (not really a surprise there). An AA 6.5 Grendel AR isn't cheap - not by a long-shot (no pun intended)! But the company has put the necessary R&D into it to make sure the gun/cartridge is effective (hunting or sniping), reliable (an *essential* - no matter it's use!), and durable enough to not be thought of as a 'Safe Queen'! There are 'varmint loads', with 90-gr. soft-point and hollow-point bullets - including one from AA themselves, I think. Something like that would be my choice for a home-defence/self-defence load, I think. (About the same sectional density as a 65-gr 5.56; would like an 80-gr, but never heard of a 6.5/.264 in that weight.) Alexander Arms has said that, in their view, the problems that are most commonly seen are the result, usually, of either 'pushing' the cartridge into operating 'outside it's envelope' &/or using inappropriate powders - I've seen a list of powders that they recommend for making loads. With the multiplication of powders in the last 8-10 years, I wonder if that's helped the situation or worsened it?

I can't get behind the velocity of 6.5 Grendel. I'm convinced it should be 6 Grendel. You can get 2800 FPS with 100+ grain .243 bullets. Much better performance. Am I crazy? I don't think there's enough powder for 6.5 bullets.

I have been shooting a 6.5x55 Swede for about 50 years. I realize that you are somehow comparing the Grendel to the Creedmore which is similar to comparing Apples to Grapefruits. Shooting long range I'll take my K98 Mauser custom to any Creedmore. I do have a couple of Grendel rifles. A CZ bolt action tack driver and a converted mini30. I will not own an AR. I think they are junk. I do like that uppers can be swapped easily but overall I am not a fan of direct impingement gas systems. I prefer M-1/M-14 piston operated system. My other favorite battle rifle is an SKS. As.for the 6.5 Grendel, I believe it is excellent for hunting medium size game including Caribou. Having harvested moose and elk with careful shot placement it will produce effective one kills but if I am hunting game that large I will use my Swede. I also have a 260 Remington rifle that has been a great deer harvester. You might notice that I am a big fan of 6.5mm bullets. Both the sectional density and ballistic coefficient are spectacular in my opinion. I love my CZ 527 in the woods. It is extremely accurate and the whitetail I shot a few weeks ago dropped dead after about 30-40 feet. For me it is my favorite hunting caliber. Very light recoil and excellent kinetic energy even down range. As a battle rifle if I were going to be in a firefight I would pick the Grendel. If I could get a brand new SKS in 6.5 Grendel I would buy it in a heartbeat. My home defense weapon is a ruger mini-6.5 Grendel built by Accuracy Systems in Colorado. I'm not too sure why Hornady and Ruger. Developed the Creedmore in the first place. There really isn't anything wrong with the 260 Remington and necking down .308 brass is a piece of cake.

@stickfigureman3D
@stickfigureman3D 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! Grendel requires a barrel, bolt, and new magazines but uses standard ar 15 lowers among other parts. The beauty is that it's easy enough to change a rifle back if you decide you want .223. most folks get a second upper so it's really simple to swap.
@Mark.Hugie1

Thanks a lot , I appreciate you taking the time to there shooter! I was tossing are the idea of getting a second upper chambered in either .224 Valkyrie or 6.5 Grendel. Although I've been strongly leaning more towards the Grendel because it's a far more hard hitting round than. 223 and the .224 has much longer range but only packs a "little" more punch.

Not sure about 140 ELD's but 129 ABLR and 130 VLDs work well. Precision Firearms loads the 129 ABLR and Federal and Copper Creek Custom load the 130 VLD. Having a little experience with the 6.5 Grendel, the Hornady 123 Gr SST "Custom" loads have the lowest SD of any factory load I have shot, but they all seem really good. Even the 100 gr Wolf ammo is not bad for plinking. It had a SD of 15-16 if I recall.

I wish they did an ar 15 upper that was a little bit beefier to allow a thicker ar bolt for the grendel. I'm sure that would expand the life of those bolts and probably even get the military to consider switching to the grendel cartridge. I think I m gonna get into it. Thanks for the great video!

all the comparisons are good and all but i feel like the obvious should also be looked at. case size and powder capacity. the grendel holds less than both other cartridges compared here so considering the performance numbers on here i would say is pretty impressive what the grendel can do with less.

Honestly? The AMU guys' .224 Valkryie, imho, is near equal to lheavy gr .260*

PS.....If it's about SHTF? .308s right? So we all agreed to get Aero custom to make it "life proofed"....but HOWEVER 6.5CM in a bolt gun is a pleasure!! Just now I know those SMU old dogs from OIF1/2 saying they dumped a few threats w/Grendel? First hit while missing heart or spine or head? PRETTY GOOD. Stops massive hogs so...

6.5 does look good ! Fits Light fighter concept . One shot one kill and no need to double or triple tap and waste time , ammo when a sniper is scoping you. Reach out there and see who has used it combat ? Be there first then and write a book about it G ! I went to combat with 6.5 Gren :) ( actually 6.71 Sami) and took out ALQidad , ISIS and Taliban with one loaded mag !

To get the velocities he’s talking about you need about 2650 FPS at the muzzle, not likely with a 20” barrel…

I know this is an old video but 6.5 Grendel has pretty much became my go to cartridge in my ar15’s. Of coarse I’ve got my 223/5.56 but my Grendel’s kick ass in all categories over the 223 especially since wolf steel case is pretty plentiful. The wolf doesn’t really shoot that great 2 moa at 100yds but it’s good enough to hit 8 inch plates and 2 liter coke bottles at 350-450yds that’s as far as I can currently shoot. But my home built Grendel with hornady black 123gn eld’s shoots 2.5 to 3.5 inch groups at 400yds. Still working on my handloads (thanks johnnys reloading bench) so hopefully I’m able to get a little better accuracy. But it’s a solid 600yd rifle that weighs 8.4lbs with a 15rd mag and a 4-14x primary arms acss scope. Probably good for farther than that but I’m not sure if I would be lol. 18’ b/a barrel Anderson receivers and bolt. Ubr buttstock radical arms 15’ rail rock river 2stage match trigger 7.62 bcm compensator and a knockoff atlas bipod. Gun shoots very good for the money I have invested. Oh yea and it’s pretty much my primary deer rifle to. The 110gn Lehigh controlled chaos is what I’m currently using and it works awesome. But the federal fusion 120gn sp and 123gn hornady sst are both great for deer too

Overall great cartridge very happy!
