'Unusual values!' Royal expert on the Queen, The Crown and James Bond | Gyles Brandreth interview. While the world waits to hear what broadsides Prince Harry and Meghan Markle launch at the royal family in their Netflix docuseries, those with longer memories may remember the King Charles III’s own criticism of his parents which ‘distressed’ his parents. That’s the view of the Queen's biographer and friend of the royals, Gyles Brandreth, who believes that it was the public nature of the criticisms that hurt the most. In a very special Palace Confidential interview (Part 1), here's what Gyles Brandreth talks about:
0:00 The Queen’s biographer and friend Gyles Brandreth joins Palace Confidential to discuss his new book
0:50 ‘Show the Queen’s inward mind’ What Gyles Brandreth did differently when writing the Queen’s biography
3:10 ‘Nobody was ever normal with the Queen’ Gyles recalls the first time he met the Queen
4:57 ‘Do not let daylight in on magic!’ What was the Buckingham Palace reaction to Gyles’s writing a biography?
5:35 From James Bond to Paddington Bear: Discussing the Queen’s sense humour
8:35 ‘We live in a very dark world…she was an exemplar of goodness’
9:49 ‘Unusual values’ What surprised Gyles about the Queen?
11:23 Prince Philip wasn’t the only ‘husband-material’ candidate the young Queen thought about as a Princess!
14:03 From dogs to grand-children, the Queen was incredibly even-handed
15:54 The Queen became less conservative as she got older and more informal!
19:25 ‘Strong thighs Mrs Thatcher!’ Gyles shares an absolutely INCREDIBLE anecdote about the Queen’s first meeting with Margaret Thatcher
21:13 ‘Totally trust her’ The amazing dynamic the Queen had with world leaders
24:46 The Queen was ‘hurt’ by King Charles parenting criticism
26:35 Prince Philip would have been ‘appalled’ by Prince Harry Meghan Markle Oprah interview
28:02 ‘The Queen didn’t hesitate’: How did the Queen react to the Prince Andrew scandals?
34:20 The Queen takes the ‘long view’ and would not have been rocked by Prince Harry and Prince Andrew issues
35:23 The Queen was ‘very keen’ on James Bond films!

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. Mr. Gyles Brandreth did leave me with a more well-rounded, human sense of the late Queen Elizabeth II. I am also left with an even stronger sympathy for King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, who must have such a deep void in their lives. Not just the mother she was, but the person and woman she was.

I think the late Queen is one of the most interesting persons in our time. Born and not meant to be queen, probably just an ordinary girl, although royal, she had the most incredible path in life, and lived the Christian values. Duty, faith and humility. I admire her. Actually, three British women are the most interesting in my lifetime - the late Queen, Agatha Christie and Margaret Thatcher.

I can't remember NOT ever being fascinated with the British Royal Family! As a 49 year old, divorced, mother of 2, Nurse Practitioner and American, I can remember exactly where I was, who I was with and exactly what I was doing when PD passed away. I remember initially finding out that she was in the accident to just a few hours later when her passing was reported and I felt like I lost a hero. I have a much better understanding now of her role in the dilution of her marriage to the King. Just in the last 7 years have I really dedicated my personal time into doing deep dives into everything I could find on them, their ancestors and it hasn't changed yet. They absolutely fascinate me and I have such a enormous amount of respect for the late Queen Elizabeth and always will. I can think of no one else in my lifetime that I admire more and I could not BE more outraged at what Rachel Meghan Markle has done to that family. As much anger that I feel at Harry, I too, was in a 15 year relationship with a narcissist and I couldn't see it when I was in it either. It's taken me years..... almost 7 now and I am still sorting myself out. This is not going to end well for him and he is going to really need his family when it does because you can't imagine what someone you once loved can turn around and do to you. Some people just have no idea what's going on and I am sick watching this woman completely do her best to tear down her own children's birthright!!!!! What kind of sicko does that and why the hell hasn't someone stopped her yet? This behavior wouldn't be tolerated if it wasn't such a sick and twisted world we live in right now and right now I don't think I can be shocked anymore at their behavior.... but here I am, shocked again at the new low they've hit and the absolute useful idiots that are supporting them across my country. Someone needs to have both of them committed on a 72°psychiatric hold because they are really a danger to themselves and others. ❤️ from Pensacola

I feel so saddened for King Charles- he’s a sensitive man and has so much to cope with in losing his parents, while at the same time having his errant son betraying his family and his country. Your comments on living with a narcissist are valuable, and it’s easy to see why KC is holding back on stripping the Sussex’s of their titles. MM has her greedy eyes set on money, and she will be relentless in trying to get it.

The more we learn about the late gracious QE2, the more there is to love and respect. The world needs more people like her. I hope KCharles retains a lot of his mother’s good qualities, while moving the Monarchy forward to meet the challenges of the times. Her special-ness was appreciated the world over, judging by how much outpouring of emotion during the events of her passing. May she RIP and we are grateful to have her example to follow.

Thank you 💖 I meet our wonderful Queen Elizabeth II twice in New Zealand, once as a child a group of us that were able, came to meet her, the hospital and our parents made this possible and the second time as a woman in her mid 20s.if I am correct, it was a little while ago, I don't keep a diary so it may have been in my early 30s but that being said, I remember feeling very valued in Prince Philips and her Majesty's presence.

Hello from Singapore! This episode was lovely to watch and I can’t wait for part two. I loved all the intimate little details that Gyles had shared. Isn’t it just fascinating how much the world got to scrutinise the monarchy and yet how little one really knows about the late Queen. I truly love the insight on the type of principles the late Queen and Prince Phillip held. I especially hold close to my heart Prince Phillip’s view on looking outside of yourself. I find that my generation (I am 3 months older than Prince Harry) and younger are sometimes much to introspective. It’s not a bad thing but that there must be a balance and we do need to look outside of ourselves. Isn’t it curious that social media was intended to help us reach out beyond ourselves, but instead it seems to have made individuals become more self-centred at the same time?

Giles is one of my favourite people. I remember him from those early days when was often on TV as President of the Cambridge Student Union, even then wearing his Jumpers. His wit, intelligence and humanity have always been there. This is one Royal book I will want to read.

Ah, Jo, Delightful interview! Brought sunshine to a grey December afternoon in Virginia. With deft brushwork Brandreth paints a well studied, yet fresh portrait of Elizabeth II. Congrats. Look forward to Tuesday PART II and the Book.

There will never be another sovereign like Queen Elizabeth II and I am so thankful she doesnt have to see the mess that Harry has created in trying to destroy the Monarchy that she upheld

The Queen was a truly good person; take a look at the way she loves animals and how they were a huge part of her life; sharing every aspect her home. Animals; horses, dogs, cats, wildlife can tell if a person is consistently kind and thoughtful and importantly, gentle. Equally, they can also sense the opposite characters too. When Observing the two Princes,William & Harry playing polo, note how differently they interact with their horses. William will often reward the horse with a pat or an apple after the game. Polo is a highly competitive sport, and no-one likes loosing, but I have never witnessed William take his frustration out on his horse. Unlike Harry.
