I call BS. First, the firing rhythm doesn't match the speed of the engine shown. Second, between 0:35 and 1:05 I hear what sounds like a ship engine, turn 52 times; coincidentally the exact speed of this 104rpm engine at full ahead. Third, the turbochargers pitch is consistent with an engine under significant load so how could you take a dry engine of this size from standstill to 45rpm and under load for a 90sec test and not have any transient engine or turbo spool up sounds? Unless it was already stabilized at 45rpm, then lube oil cut to begin the 90sec test in which case we should still see lingering oil flowing down surfaces towards the sump. Finally, I hear the audio skip at 0:45 and 0:53 like it was spliced/looped. I think its a sped up time lapse with audio of the same engine running at 104rpm. Not busting anyone's chops, nice video, but I shall not be fooled today. Haha

@@Genius_at_Work Slow turning is on air. Won't work either if the oil pumps are not running. Turning gear... Well, I counted 27 revolutions, that is about 1,5 hour of turning. Nobody does that voluntarily either. But if you check very closely, you will find that the sound and the video remain in perfect sync during the time you see the crosshead moving. I am pretty sure this is real, and oil pressure alarms are pretty easily bridged.

@marinercj4672

the aim is for running in Emergency Conditions.if we take some precautions it is safe and engine have to run only short period(in seconds).the main cause of temperature rise due to main bearings.

Large marine diesels have a separate total loss lubrication system for the cylinders. Presumably, they left it running or the pistons would have seized quickly. The crankcase uses a circulating pressurized lube system with a different type of oil.

They inspected the bearing after the run, so I would say it was a test to see how well the Teflon protected the bearing if there's a loss of oil pressure.

Now the real trick would be to come up with a design and materials that can run long-term without oil and without cooling, so that you minimize heat losses from the combustion gases to the cylinder walls and piston (adiabatic engine).

@@bonkeydollocks1879 I'd like to know the definitive answer myself, but I'll give it a shot. Best I could figure out from scattered articles (they aren't very common) is that back when these were developed in the 1950s, the premium placed on extra energy efficiency wasn't enough to drive further development. In addition, working from general principles, I would hazard a guess that lubrication (or excessive wear without lubrication) would be a problem that would have required further development to solve. If the whole engine is going to run so hot that it glows orange, most lubricants will boil, burn up, or otherwise decompose, and lubricants that don't have that problem will freeze when the engine cools down after you turn it off; graphite might burn slowly enough that you could use it, but replacing that which burns up would be a problem since graphite is a solid (maybe you could apply some type of lubricating oil that would preferentially decompose into graphite faster than it burns up?). (A gas turbine gets around these problems by not having sliding junctions in the highest temperature regions, but you can't arrange this in a reciprocating engine, and a gas turbine is efficient only if run very close to its optimal power rating.) The alternative would be to try to come up with engine materials that can slide without lubrication but still wear out slowly enough to let you get a decent service life out of them (and engineer the sliding parts of the engine to be all easily replaceable for when they do wear out). Finally, it is not trivial to make the high temperature ceramics that can take the full combustion heat without weakening, but have enough toughness not to crack with a heat differential or engine knock (and if you're going the no-lubricant route, slide easily enough not to wear out ridiculously fast). Metals won't cut it, because the ones that have a high enough melting point not to weaken at full combustion heat either burn to make an oxide that evaporates at high temperatures (tantalum, tungsten, rhenium, osmium), or are horrifically expensive (iridium). (In addition, metals tend to conduct too much heat, which partially defeats the purpose of an adiabatic engine, although this matters less when you are at ship engine sizes.)
