Let's see if Sony decides to step it up and actually compete this year, or just continue down their own path doing what they're doing

@@ShibiChan I think it will be a bit of both. So they will in their unique way offer something that can please the main stream a bit more with improvements in terms of basic mode (pixel binning cropped zooming for example and better HDR on uwide and tele) but keep their unique quirks like tiny sensors for uwide and tele cameras. So I expect the 1 VI to be roughly the same size as 1 V and also same design. No large camera bump or anything. They will keep the main sensor as is with a maybe newer revision of the sensor (the same sensor that has now the LYT name instead of IMX) Their focus will be on tele camera and zoom being as good or better as their optical solution. Just using cropping on the main sensor that they will enhance with "AI" - maybe. Not sure if they will jump on the AI bandwagon.

Any better than the photo pro app?

@@joelconolly5574 For photos, you can shoot RAW on both motionCam and photo pro. But I think Raw on photo pro has Sony's flavour of RAW. For videos MotionCam pro is just superior. Like you can't compete with RAW video. It's a night and day difference. MotionCam is for enthusiasts mainly and wants to push to the limits of the sensor.

It's a really interesting question actually. At the moment, I think Vivo wins hands down in terms of optical quality. I think Sony went into their new lines of phones with good intentions, but I think stubbornness and unwillingness to innovate beyond a certain point has really held them back. They have great R&D, almost everyone uses their sensors. But then everyone else also utilizes those sensors better than Sony themselves. At one point a couple of years ago I would've said Sony without a doubt is the closest to a dedicated camera experience. But just about everyone has dedicated manual modes now. Even my Vivo has tons of more modes within the pro mode, such as automatic exposure bracketing, intervalometer, a raw stacking mode.. so much more than Sony. So I think Sony doesn't deserve to call themselves the "phone for photographers" at the moment. They have a lot of catching up to do in both software and hardware. Don't get me wrong, the Xperia design is the best I think I've ever seen. But choosing elegance and form over functional photography doesn't make you the best phone for photographers. Rant over lol

I expected a larger difference as well, but it makes sense like it should. It also goes to show that sensor size is still going to be the largest decider at the end of the day, and to be extra skeptical of company marketing claims

@@ShibiChan Speaking of marketing claims, their most ridiculous and outrageous claim when 1 V came out is that it is comparable to their full frame cameras in image quality and dynamic range. It still sits on their official page for this device, and I remember their engineers mention this in one of the videos around release day

@@ToYo94 Right? It says something different on the Japanese site versus the US site as well. It's not even close, not even a little bit close to full frame performance in any category. Since I saw that, I've been a lot more critical of Sony and will likely continue to be with the 1VI

I think it depends on the subject. If you need to photograph close objects using only the main camera, I think Xperia will be better as the smaller main sensor allows for a wider focus plane. Otherwise I think the Vivo is better in every aspect

Using the MotionCam Pro histogram takes into account differences in aperture and applies that to the difference in shutter speed. There's an inherent space for slight miscalculation, which is why I gave a small percentage range. OEMs also sometimes apply things to their raw images anyway, which is why using a third party app like MotionCam was a fair alternative. For example, Sony bakes in vignetting correction, which can absolutely ruin their raw files if pushed a lot in post. I think Samsung also has stacking in their Pro Raw app, but I haven't used them since the S22 Ultra, so I'm not sure how it works now. MotionCam just pulls the raw sensor data, with options to ignore any automatically applied corrections such as vignetting. This is the fairest comparison I could think of given what I have at the moment. It's purely sensor based, before any benefits or detriments applied by the OEMs to the files (in terms of comparing the raws with MotionCam)
