When I was in middle school during quarantine I used to wait on the edge of my seat for you to release these videos. Watercolor was and still is my life and my joy, and I'm currently writing my college essay surrounding the building of a palette and creating symbolism through that and all that jazz. I had to go back to watch this video as a reference for my essay since you had such a big impact on the start of my nerding out about pigments and such, and I guess I want to say thank you for putting this video out there! Still much appreciation and love for your work, -Allison :)

And that is why I always look at the sets offered by a brand when trying to decide which ones i might put in a palette. Somebody was actually paid to create that combination so it's always worth having a look at, at least, or even using it as a starting position. Of course no set ever works for absolutely everyone's preferences but it's so much easier for me to start from something that works and figure out what I would like to improve, or what kind of direction i'd like to shift it in.

I'd love to see you do a few limited palette sketch (3-4 colors that you choose) and show us how you use them, the mixes you can achieve, etc. I'm starting to think about making my own palette with better artist grade paints and I think it would help narrowing down a bit to which I'd like to try. Good paints are a bit expansive and I don't want to spend money on colors I know nothing about. I watch other watercolor artists as well, so it helps seeing what colors they use and how they use them. Thank you for sharing your art and your palette with us :)

Amy Earls transparent red oxide in oils is the way to my heart, guh! And for English red light - I only have it in Lukas. To be honest - I don’t have many earth tone watercolors. The ones that I do have are Japanese or Korean. We know how those are multi pigment blends and kinda perform differently. I would love to one day get my hands on a legit tube of earth tones - the ones Denise Soden raves about.

Just in case you're still debating on the Prima / Art Philosophy watercolor tubes, I just tried them. While I was really happy with the paint quality, I noticed that a lot of the pigments that they use are fugitive. Just about every red/pink, bright yellow and several of the blues will fade over time. If you're not worried about hanging your art on the wall, such as a present for family or for art for sale, then it could be a fun paint to play with. Though a good selection by ShinHan would be about the same quality for even lower price per tube. Even the cost per tube for Mission Gold is only about $3 to $4 per tube when bought in a set, with much more of a selection than the 18 colors Art Philosophy has right now. When the Art Philosophy are not on a special sale, the $8-$12 a tube price tag is up there with what you could find Daniel Smith or another really high end lightfast paint for (and you'd have a lot more choices of quality pigments).

@@VictoriaGedvillas let me sum it up dioxazine violet is an absolute must for creating realistic blondes, especially being a hairdresser, the same logic applies to cool down the warmth and create platinums and beige blondes. quin rose is my ride or die cool red, it's the perfect inbetween tone of red and magenta, and having tried using both quin red and quin magenta in it's place, just didn't yield the same results that quin rose gives you. green gold (PY129) is quickly becoming a staple, it's a great warm green for mixing skin tones and earth tones, and easily can be pulled cooler by adding PG7 so i don't really find myself missing a brighter spring green like the green gold on your palette. ultramarine and phthalo blue (GS) will probably always be my warm and cool blues, they are too perfect and i don't really have a desire to try other blues because i feel it would just be a waste. there's a reason they remain staples in so many palettes and starter sets, you know? they're reliable. those are my faves, and some stuff i am experimenting with it. i recently put quin burnt orange on my palette to see if it would make it easier to mix up some warmer hair colours and so far it is working out wonderfully for that purpose, but i had kicked quin gold off in order to fit it in and i really miss quin gold, so i need to find it a new spot. i also swapped, i think it was perylene scarlett, for vermillion to see how it is as a warm red and the jury is still out as i haven't used it enough to feel one way or another. on first impression it feels maybe too deep in tone, but it just may come down to using more water in my mixes as i'm not used to it yet.

the daniel smith split primary one she recommended is solid and around $20 on amazon, i'm sure she would also recommend the paul rubens cotten sketchbook that can also be found on amazon roughly between $16-18, you'd probably need a palette too which the one she's using in the video is, i believe was $8 the last time i purchased, and brushes the creative inspirations 4 piece set is $12 that are wonderful to start with, which tori has reviewed on her previous channel and speaks highly of :)

A really great value set is the Pretty Excellent/MeiLiang 36 pan set. I bought mine for £19, but I've seen it for like £13 on Amazon. I don't think there's a better value set around tbh.

Do you have any suggestions for sites or books to use to learn about pigments and such? I love watching your videos and they make me want to learn more about my watercolours than just "hey I think this looks good with this"

I have some tubes of PO49 for sale. I actually have all three colors with the pigment, quin gold, undersea green, sap green. You can find them on FB market, or you can contact me directly if you are interested. I enjoyed your palette tour! I also have quite the collection of watercolors!

in love with the moon excellent question, the turner colors from 2018 - the tiny tubes were from the 18 piece set. The remaining colors - they were either gifted or purchased individually

Hi Tori! Where did you research pigment properties? I have a book but it is outdated and doesn’t match the colors I have, and the Windsor and Newton website doesn’t have much more than the basic facts (I use Windsor and Newton since it’s what I can afford)

Sofie E I 100% feel you on this. All my books are outdated too and old tutorial books reference colors that are no longer on the market or fugitive. Handprint is a great start, I have a few newer books that are ok - I’ll make sure to showcase them in a later video!

for me, i binged watched a ton of watercolour videos on here. i just soaked in as much as i could and i feel quite confident about pigments and how they behave just from watching youtube (and of course experience now). it was especially helpful when i was starting out with the medium and choosing the my first paints.

If it helps there’s this website called handprint .com that has tons of information about watercolor pigments and other related topics. Though I’m not sure how frequent it updates. www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/waterfs.html

if you want a sketchbook not specifically for watercolor I love the illo square sketchbook because it is a perfect size for me, it is kind of like mixed media and I think it works great with alcohol markers.

Love these watercolor videos! Can’t wait to see more. What is your view on toxicity of paint? I just created a limited palette with the least toxic pigment I could find and I am not entirely happy with the options. My palette ended up being French ultramarine, Mayan blue genuine, Azo yellow, yellow orche quinacridone red, and Mayan red (All from Daniel Smith). A lot of the pigment have unknown long term hazardous effects, organ poisons, or are carcinogens. Thanks and love your art!

Could someone explain to what phthalo or Holbein mean? Is it just a brand or just the name of the paint? How does it apply to the paint and what does it say about the paint?

@@kevinnguyen68 cadmium and others like quinacridone are again just family of pigments! these are organic compounds used to make pigments for paints and have a specific tone/hue to them. while opera i believe is a type of extremely vivid pink paint.
