I remember when these came out as a kid and our neighbor got one...all us kids just gathered around it slack jawed...it looked like the future...all these years later it still has awesome road presence...great job America

Drove one like this with the 351c engine for a few hundred miles when I was about 14, and loved it. I was hitchhiking when an old man in a Mach One pulled over to give me a ride. He said he was delivering the car to Florida, sort of like the guy in Vanishing Point, but not suicidal, lol. He asked me if I had a drivers license, told him no, can you drive he said, I said yeah. He said I need some sleep, so he got in the back seat to try to get some sleep and said don't go over 70. I couldn't help myself, and was going about 100 after I thought he was asleep, he woke up and said slow this damn thing down, so I did and he went back to sleep. I thought I was real cool driving that Mach One.

I have own my 70 Mach 1 351C 4 speed car since 9/73. It still sports its original factory paint. Its been the best car I have ever owned. Don't think I'll ever sell it.

I'd rather have a 351 Cleveland 4-Speed Mach 1 over a 428 4-Speed. If value wasn't a factor.

That A/C has to go true muscle cars back in the day never came with that power robbing option !

The A/C was pulled in 1977 when I purchased this car. But because of the A/C the car had the big block radiator and the shock tower reinforcement. Us hot rodding kids had no need for A/C

351 Cleveland is quicker (1/4 mile) and handles much better. I own both..........

Christopher Lynn : + If U Change Cam in Cleveland It Will Stay Up W/ 390 S Code,Which is Only 15-20 h.p.More than A STK Cleveland,Depending on if U Have Shaker on Cleveland & 390 S Codes Are Almost As Expensive as 428's.

Cleveland equipped Mustangs turned in quicker 1/4 miles times then ANY of the other Mustangs in that era. Speaking of the 1971 Boss 351. I purchased a 70 SCJ Mach 1 in 1972 just before going over seas (U.S.M.C.) and currently own a 70 Mach 1, close ratio 4-speed, shaker and prefer it over the SCJ other then value too. Ed, shakers have been proven to not enhance performance over non shaker cars. I believe you must be comparing advertised H.P. In the 70's, manufactures advertised lower H.P. for insurance purposes. I love my Cleveland 4V................

Having owned both the 428CJ and the 351C-4V Mach 1's, both with C-6 transmissions and 3.25:1 rear gears, my experience is that the 428 is a good bit quicker that the Cleveland. The Cleveland pulled fine once you got up to 30MPH but it lacked sufficient low end torque to get off the line like the 428.

The Cleveland motors actually made about the same HP as the 390's if not a few more. I know they weren't advertised that way. The Cleveland motors were somewhat under rated and the 390's were not and may have been overrated. I know the '67 390's ran the 1/4 in the low 15 second range while 4 barrel '70 Cleveland's could dip into the high 14's. I don't know why Ford played so loose with their numbers. 428 CJ's were under rated in HP but overrated in displacement. They had 427 CID while the 427 FE really had 425 CID. The 351C and 351W small blocks each had 352 CID with the exact same bore and stroke as Ford's 352 FE big block.

I had a 1970 Mach 1 in medium blue metallic with a 351 Cleveland 4v 4 speed from January of 1974 thru August of 1978. My dad and I installed Crager full length headers and Thrush mufflers on it seven months after I bought it. I also added a Sun tachometer on the steering column. I had the fastest 1970 Mustang in my city, until the guy who worked at Ford (who lived four houses down from my parents house) bought a 1970 Boss 429. He put humongous tires on the rear end. I could definitely beat him on a road course, but could never come close in a 1/4 mile.
