I look back at 65 years of age and marvel that this was just what we heard everyday on the radio. So many artists that are revered today that were just the latest to be played back then. I have been blessed to hear so many great artists over the years and Bob was certainly a part of my music collection.

The song literally says”””There was this long lovely dancer in a club downtown”, so, yes, the song is about a stripper. Also, the bassist on this recording was none other than Carol Kaye of the famed “Wrecking Crew”. Back then music was laid down on tape and studio time was outrageously expensive so you hired pro session musicians to save time/money.

You mentioned "Roll Me Away" as a possible next Seger tune. I would definitely recommend it. It's got that Seger storytelling thing goin' on and the breakdown/buildup of the last verse and chorus is a sonic beauty to behold, right up to the last line, which fairly explodes. If any song could make you believe you could fly, this would be the one.

You’re speaking as a big fan of this artist snd genre. I like Seger ALLOT but I wouldn’t rate this as equal to Pink Floyd, the best of Queen ir Zeppelin etc. A&A are comparing this song to ALL the music they’ve heard over the years. I think , even as a fan, that B+ is fair. It’s not even among his best songs imo. Keep in mind that they said they have revised they’re rating system. They’re harder graders now. They r heard enough rock now to have allot of comparisons.

This and “Night Moves” have never been surpassed in conveying both the unique emotions of coming into manhood, and nostalgia for that time in life. This song is reality from youth, for me. 14 years old, standing on a small town main street outside the bar that advertised "Exotic Dancing" and trying to see the corner of the stage, through the front window and past the cash register for the off sale store in front of the bar. This song has struck a nostalgic note for me, ever since the first time I heard it at age 17-18. The whole Night Moves album feels to me like a nostalgic look back from his thirties. I hope you'll get to Rock & Roll Never Forgets, as it is another fantastic "looking back" song that will also kick your butt a little bit.

A couple beers at the Captain’s Table, and we found ourselves outside the Black Poodle “trying to get our courage up.” As we were working to convince the least adventurous among us the door opened and the bouncer said, “show’s just starting, would you gentlemen like to come in?” I still can’t hear the song “Centerfold” without thinking of that night and the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.

Another banger recorded with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who played on some of the most iconic albums ever recorded. In interviews they said that Bob gave them credit on the songs and has paid them all these years, without a contract. A true handshake deal and it just shows what kind of person Bob Seger is. Something as simple as the main guitar riff on Mainstreet can make all the difference in a song and Bob understands that.

Seger on the origins of the song: Just like "Night Moves," that song rings true. What do they tell you about writing? They say you have to write about what you know. I grew up near that street corner. My older brother was a lot of trouble and I was not. My parents always called me "the good one" and they said: "You're the one we can trust." So at age 10, 11, 12 I was able to walk through Ann Arbor until midnight if I felt like it. There was a club, and this blues band from Chicago named Washboard Willie was playing there. In the window of this club there were people dancing, and occasionally there would be a beautiful girl dancing in the window. And at my age you were starting to wake up to girls. I would sit out there and watch through the window and listen to this great R&B. I'm looking and I'm listening and thinking this is what I wanna do with my life. The club was very lively, and to a 12, 13-year-old that was pretty cool. I loved the groove because it's Chicago blues, and the women are dancing and you're starting to think the women are looking pretty good. So all that stuff ended up becoming the elements for the song "Mainstreet."

I've been requesting it for 2-3 years, but you guys should do a reaction to Bob Seger's Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight. It's definitely an S tier banger. This song isn't about a stripper or strip club, it's about a blues club near where Seger grew up and he wrote this song after hanging outside of the club when he was around 13-14 years old to listen to a Chicago blues band called Washboard Willie. He saw people dancing in the club and one of them was the younger lady that he sings about in the song. 🤘✌️

Love how the final four ‘down on main street’ vocals fade into memory-like echoes.

Bob Seger's best song. This is the song that made him famous.

No, that would have been the single before it, "Night Moves," which made the top 10. "Mainstreet" stalled at #19 for some reason (maybe because so many bought the album). We agree, though, that it is Seger's best. But while "Night Moves" made him REALLY famous, he was already known for "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," which made the top 20 in late '68 or early '69.

@@josephself2610 I might have my songs reversed. I was like 15 or 16 when Night Moves and Main Street came out. 45 years ago...lol.

@@mrsteve3527Easy to do. In 1976, I saw Seger opening for the Doobie Brothers about a month before LIVE BULLET came out. Wonderful 30 minute set, I wanted more. I picked up LIVE BULLET when I first saw it, and did the same with NIGHT MOVES later that year.

A friend of mine back in the day coaxed me into going seeing him live. The only reason I went was because they were front- row center seats. Bob and his band were amazing and really belted out their tunes. That turned me into a big Seger fan right then and there. And YES, you MUST hit Roll Me Away. It's a jammer and a half!

My favorite Seger LP. Came out fall of 76. Beginning of my Junior yr in HS. Bob Seger music brings me back to a time I miss. Just like his lyrics describe. "Sometimes even now When I'm feelin' lonely and beat I drift back in time and I find my feet".

Bob's greatest gift is that his songs transport the listener "into the song". One becomes the person living the song.
