Thank you! I've lived in south TX with a female sago growing for 7yrs in the front of my home not knowing or doing much maintenance to it. After a winter freeze, I started paying more attention when I thought I might lose this massive beauty! I hired someone to clean up the tree because it was more work than my schedule allowed. When the trimmer cut all but one prong, I literally cried! Also, no one recognized my house without its oversized leaves taking over the walkway. I learned a lot in this video and even braved removing 16 pups from the mother plant! Fingers crossed because now I want to save them all. ❤

Great video, good information and nice job pruning, those sago's look awesome. I live in Toronto, Canada. Our weather is so cold here no palm or sago would survive the winter. I have an 8 year old Sago in a pot, not planted outside, they are great looking plans - very unique, they remind me of Vegas. Cheers pal.

We had below freezing temp in N Fl for a couple days and my potted Sago died (I thought so I cut of dead fronds and with a great deal of effort got out of pot. Since rootball was so compact and heavy I drug it to burn pile. A few weeks later when I went to burn the Sago had put out new growth. I’m repotting in a much larger pot and putting in a semi permanent spot. I never watered or fertilized it. I love a plant that can take care of itself.

They grow massive in width. I would not plant one in front of a house. They have offshoots that are thick and hard to remove from the base. The leaves have a sticky ruff texture and I think there are some needles near the trunk. They are however manageable in a planter pot. That is just where ours are staying. Thankyou for the video!

I trim with cutters sometimes but i learned from someone that i can pull each palm leaf with my hands.. i pull (snap) a palm leaf sideways downward and it comes off. It leaves the cut more beautiful all around. Till this day i dont think it damages the palm but if i do get carried away i feel ill just make it look ugly.. i had a cousin that trimmed all the damn sago leaves and the palm looked wierd but it still grew back...after a month or two

Great video good advice why do some of the leaves go yellow? 🤔
@agoutside5192
@agoutside5192 2 жыл бұрын
Very cold temperatures can cause the leaves to turn yellow but if they turn yellow during the growing season they something is not right. They either need water or soil conditions are not good and this is a sign that they are dying. As long as the bulb is still solid then it can reciprocate with corrective action. Good luck and thanks for commenting!

I😮’m in Maryland 7a. My male sago is 6 feet tall and has been potted for 30 yrs, at least. I roll it outside in May to October sun but it is leaning in the pot. I will attempt to remove it ,add fresh soil and set it upright. Do you think it would survive outside planted in the ground in sun year round?
@whitesamurai
@whitesamurai 9 ай бұрын
My hunch is that you have to ask yourself: where do these come from and how similar is the weather there to Maryland? I think they come from Okinawa, which is basically subtropical. But I have seen plants that look like this - and might be the same plant - in Tokyo. It does snow in Tokyo but just barely e.g. a couple times a year.

Peace be upon you. In my home garden, the sycd was grown 15 years ago. During the first 13 years it was good, but in the last two years, the growth of the leaves began to be incomplete. Note that I fertilize it every winter with manure or compost, and during the summer with NPK fertilizer. Help us❤
@agoutside5192
@agoutside5192 10 ай бұрын
A well established sago should not need much fertilizing. Sounds like it not very happy. Follow the tips I provided in the video but if that doesn’t work make sure it’s in a well drained sandy loom soil and in full sun. Hope it’s doing better

We got a house where they planted them too close to the back of the house and down the side of the garage. There is no room to move them out further. We dont want the fronds on the buildings. Will trimming them off more on the backside cause problems?

Most of the Palm Trees get diseases from out side so called professional Pruners or Tree maintainer’s. #1 Cause they do not clean/ sterilize their tools and go to the next home and spread disease from their tools. This especially goes for their different cutting saws.

Hi So If I dug up pups from a male as it has a cone on it at the moment ? Will they all be males ? I am So pleased to see what the pups look like ?I have about 2dozen pups I dug up some bigger ones to see how I go ?They seem nice and solid ?If there is not much root structure on them Do you add a rooting powder when potting? I am in Queensland Australia So we are about to head into summer down here
@agoutside5192
@agoutside5192 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if it’s guaranteed but chances are good they will all be the same as the palm that produced the pup. You don’t need much root structure for the bulb to form strong roots and no root powder is needed. I have a good video on potting and rooting the pups that I invite you to watch. It is very easy and the success rate is high. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck. Thanks for the comment!

I live in north Louisiana. Can I remove the flower now (October), or do I have to wait for the flower to start to die back? I dont plan on harvesting the seeds. I was hoping it would encourage new growth if I went ahead and removed it.
@agoutside5192
@agoutside5192 Жыл бұрын
I always wait for it to die back first to insure I don’t cause any damage. You won’t get any new growth sprouts until the spring anyway so I’d wait until early spring to remove. Good luck. Thanks

I depends a lot on your soil conditions but for a newly established sago 13-13-13. Once established you generally don’t need any fertilizer just keep it pruned each growing season to encourage it to keep sprouting. Thanks
