The orchestral piece that this is based on is by Johann Pachelbel (17th century German); Canon in D major. You probably have heard it before - it's really well known and used in all sorts of settings e.g. fairly popular at weddings.

The history of Pachelbel's Canon in D Major is interesting. Considered a minor work in it's time and not popular. It was lost for centuries and rediscovered / became known again in the 60's reaching a height of popularity in the 80's and to this day .still a wedding staple

The chord progression of the Canon in D is one of the foundations of our popular music today. IMO, it's the most beautiful song ever written. I really think that God gave this to Johann Pachabel so we could hear a taste of how the angels sing. ❤

Their surprise will literally take your breath away, especially if you are sitting right in front of it or next to it, in the balcony, on the other side of the arena from the stage! They also did Wizards in Winter. Their show is beyond incredible. The take classical music and put it to heavy metal. I've seen them 5 times in concert. I've taken my students to see the show. A ‘Canon’ is a classical music technique. There are professional choirs out there, commonly based in a church that can have dozens of children in them. These choirs create music that is, as J said, absolutely angelic. Often the acoustics in the church make it even more incredible.

In this case, the "Canon" is Pachelbel's Canon in D, perhaps the most famous Canon in modern music. It's been sampled and reimagined multiple times by innumerable musical acts. This version pretty much takes it back to its origin while adding a choir with Christmas lyrics. It is entirely gorgeous in any form.

Trans Siberian Orchestra (T.S.O.) always does an annual winter tour across America w/ session musicians playing their records live for the Christmas season... It's a family show that u can take your kids to - a mix of classical and heavy metal music 🤘🤘 This was a project formed in the 90's by former and current members of the classic heavy metal band Savatage from Florida... Savatage's (late) producer Paul O' Neill and keyboardist (and vocalist) Jon Oliva... They released the 1st T.S.O. album in 1996 - 'Christmas eve & other stories'... and it shocked everyone by selling 3x platinum... Savatage had never sold a gold album in America since their early 80's inception. Their 2nd album 'The Christmas attic' (1998) sold 2x platinum... the project has released 7 studio albums total before the death of producer/ composer Paul O' Neill in 2017... but T.S.O. has been touring actively every winter. After their 2001 album 'Poets and madmen'... Savatage has since ceased making new music, but Jon Oliva has been talking about bringing the band back in some capacity. In interviews, Jon Oliva has been adamant about touring... and he said that he felt that Trans Siberian Orchestra was basically an evolution of Savatage without the perception or limitation of being a 'heavy metal band'... That was why T.S.O. was commercially successful and Savatage did not break past their hardcore fanbase.

I love your reaction even though it made you cry. You will recognize the tune by baroque composer Johann Pachelbel from songs such as Memories by Maroon 5 and C U When U Get There by Coolio. By the way, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly you've been listening to is by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and when different people sing different (or the same) words but start at different times, and all sing together, that's called canon. Just like in this title. Merry Christmas to you all ❤

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was performed by an actual Symphony Orchestra. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a rock band that developed orchestral arrangements of classical and Christmas songs. They grew out of an appearance on the band Savatage's 1995 album called Dead Winter Dead - which was a rock opera telling a love story against the backdrop of war for the control of Bosnia-Herzegovina that was recently freed from USSR a thousand years of being ruled hostile forces of one type or another.

TSO's song "Old City Bar" tells the story of a magical Christmas Eve at a, well, at an old city bar. The story is so moving that I can hardly type this without crying - - just thinking about it. It really tells how beautifully strangers can act toward each other. If only all people could treat each other so kindly.
@paulmellette8925

You can't do "Old City Bar" without doing "Ornament" before and "This Christmas Day" afterward... Those three songs, though not back to back to back on the album are a true trilogy, detailing the argument between the parent and child, the child having runaway and trying to get home and lastly the revelation to the father that she is indeed on her way home. "Old City Bar" is good on its own, but the other songs give it true context and multiply the magic ten-fold!

@@paulmellette8925 While I would suggest _Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24_ as the proper starting point for TSO, as it is after all the piece that brought them to the public consciousness, I do think the song that best represents their canon is _This Christmas Day._ It's just so upbeat and full of pure happiness. A perfect Christmas song. Most of the rest of their work has a tinge of bittersweet in it, but that one avoids it for the perfect positive vibes.

As a classically trained musician the "Pachelbel Canon in D major" is my favorite piece of all classical music. I have never heard vocals on it before, Magestic . You should listen to one of the versions that is Piano with Cello accompaniment. It is gorgeous. It is magical. It has been used in so many wedding marches down the aisle for the bride over so many decades. I am always so moved when it is played. Thank you for this beautiful pick. Also, I noticed that Ozzy Nelson is sitting in the front row watching the performance. He is one of Black Histories great actors. Maybe one of the children singing is a grandchild. Check out the 1950s era show "Ozzy and Harriet" fun stuff. Be well, Canadian Grandma Lori. C.

Pachelbel’s Canon in D is one of the most famous pieces of classical music of all time. Written in the late 1600's or early 1700s. Since the 1970's and 80's it began to be recorded by more and more orchestras and it's iconic melody has made it's way into pop songs, films, as well as advertisements. Although not a Christmas song, it's heard mostly at Christmastime. The Trans Siberian Orchestra made this Christmas piece that has become one of the most iconic pieces of Christmas music.

I'm about to watch this reaction and wanted to suggest, before I forget, Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas album. It's kind of funny to hear it now, almost 40 years later, but it was HUUUUUUUUGE in the mid-80's! The first album came out in 1984 and they took off from there. "Deck the Halls" is the song you usually hear. You've probably heard it in a store while shopping now that the 80's is considered grocery store and doctor's office music! Ha! Jay, get ready for the synth! 😅

He first played their rock heavy version of "Carol of the Bells" called, "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" and they became an instant smash! The founding members were part of a local hard rock group called SAVATAGE founded by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in 1979 in Tarpon Springs, FL. You should check them out as well. Mannheim Steamroller preceded Trans Siberian. They had several albums before getting in Christmas music.

Two completely different genres and groups...Trans Siberian Orchestra morphed out of the Metal Band Savatage in late 1995.. Mannheim Steamroller has been around longer, but has NOTHING on TSO..

It is so pure, so non-commercialized, a true rarity in modern Christmas music. TSO performing Christmas Eve Sarajevo touches my soul equally, knowing full well the horrors of what the city of Sarajevo went through in the Yugoslav Wars in the early to mid 90's. I spent 11 of my first 21 years living within 100km's of the Iron Curtain (the last year was the year the Curtain collapsed) as an Air Force brat. Add to that 3 years serving in the Marine Corps. Cathedral acoustics can transform a truly beautiful song and spiral it high into the stratosphere. If you ever want to take a dive into a live performance of "The Sound of Silence," performed by Gregorian in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Make sure you pull up the live performance of that song, simply breathtaking❤❤❤ My lifelong favorite Christmas song is a tie between "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake (of ELP fame) and "Snoopy's Christmas" by The Royal Guardsmen. Followed by about 10 different songs mixed between Mannheim Steamroller and TSO...

Yes I have heard this tune before, as it’s a very famous classical tune. But not heard this particular one before. I know wizards in winter as well.

This orchestra is amazing. My wife walked down the aisle to this song. I modified it to fit the parts she wanted to walk down to. This video is part of a longer video called “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve”. It’s definitely worth watching. It’s mainly about a runaway girl around Christmas and the magic that can happen at Christmas time. My family and I watch it every year. My daughter likes falling asleep to it. 4:53 this is a Christmas take on “Cannon in D”. They have another great Christmas song called “The Three Kings and I (What Really Happened)” the song is from the view of a relative who was there that night.

Jay I believe the term you were looking for is “singing in the round” where one group continues singing a phrase while the next group sings a phrase over top of them etc. I bet you could learn the choruses to this song, teach them to your lovely children, and have a wonderful musical family experience. Thanks for sharing!❤️🎄

Pachelbel’s Canon was played at my uncle’s funeral. He was the trombonist in a brass quintet, and I was honored to take his place to perform it.

Absolutely beautiful! Trans Siberian Orchestra never disappoints. When it began I thought I was hearing Canon in D, by Johan Pachelbel, and that may be where the inspiration for this comes from.

As mentioned, this is based on Pachelbel's Canon in D, a popular wedding tune, adding the vocals. The children's choir makes it special. TSO is better known for their rock infused classical performances. A live show is an experience. My favorite is Christmas Canon Rock, this song with rock guitars! But they have many others worth a reaction.

TSO has another version of this song called "Christmas Canon Rock". Stellar guitar work and some powerhouse vocals. You need to see them live to witness the TSO Experience. The kids would love it as well!

The orchestral part is a very famous piece of classical music known as Pachelbel's "Canon in D." Then they added the children's (angel's) choir to make it a Christmas song. Very beautiful.
