Update : After my initial testing of this stove, I reached out to FireMaple and they stated that it was defective. From there they sent me a new one but after some testing the performance is exactly the same. In comparison to the Jetboil Minimo stove, the Minimo is faster at all types of boiling and rated for 1,500 BTU's less than the FireMaple. Interesting! Also, the Jetboil is much more fuel efficient. I've shared my thoughts concerning this stove with FM and how they can improve it via some design changes and it is now up to them. With the FM Sunflower stove/Heater that I shared a few months back, FM has stated that they will be improving the design of that product as well as it has some flaws. - Luke

I've owned the x2 for around a year now. So far it's been great for coffie, breakfast and cooking brats. Boiling two cups of water , around 2 mins . So for one person have nothing to complain about. It just works.

I'm getting on average around 3.5 min for a liter boil. I love this thing. It does exactly what I needed. Shaving a minute or two does not make or break my day ;)

Good informative video but i do have a question. I'm a wild camper with 50+ years experience with stoves and equipment. What is the modern obsession with time when it comes to boiling water? In my time camping i have never once thought of a stove as bad because it took a while to boil water, in fact, if i had, i would never use my spirit stove again but in fact it's my favourite. Surely if a stove is well made and gets the job done then that is the important thing? I guess its a symptom of this social media age where the equipment becomes more important than the activity. If you're like me, then the scenery, wildlife and solitude is much more important than a few minutes of waiting.

I think the obsession is with fuel usage for an equivalent boil. If I was an ultralight distance hiker that might be an issue. For normal camping I don’t see the problem. It may be a wash with money saved on the stove being used to buy more fuel. Need more than two tests for sure.

Agree 100%. My only thought would be fuel consumption. If you enjoy using a stove like this, you might need to be prepared to have more fuel on hand, so the cost of use is higher even though the price of the stove is lower.

You're missing the point old timer. The reason people are more interested in fast boil times is because it means that less fuel is being used and the stove is more efficient. If you have to keep a stove on for longer, you're going through more fuel. Meaning that you'll need to pack extra canisters for longer trips, which means more weight in your pack.

@@steveturner3999 I think you are right but if i were going ultralight i wouldnt be choosing that set-up anyway. Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur but sometimes i watch these review videos and ask myself how on earth did i survive with my old primus stove etc. We had to make do with whatever kit we could find locally, which was pretty basic. But somehow it all added to the adventure.

Ive used both genuine jet boils and jetboil knockoffs, and I find the performance difference is negligible. Is the extra 30 seconds to get to the boil worth 100 dollars - not for what I use it for! This is the crux of the matter - does it do what you need it to or are you just buying a Jetboil for bragging rights ...?

I have a Jetboil from pretty early on and it still works great. Now if it fails me would I replace it with this stove? Yeah probably. Saving $100 is pretty huge and I'm not that impatient where waiting 6 minutes for my freeze dried meal to be ready vs 3 minutes is that big of a deal.

Bro i have loved your channel for years and never find you to "sensationalise" your reviews, however i think you were a hard on poor FM here. Even if you throw the poorly designed stand away the kit for those not able to pay for a "better" performance from jetboil or msr will still get a great inexpensive alternative to boil water to make drinks and reheat and rehydrate. I feel your " if ya only want to boil water, ya could make it work" comment, may stop people buying what huge numbers of people all over the world see as a very acceptable if inferior product for a fraction of the price. Take a look at the FM polaris i think you would rate it highly. I know ya wont mind a little constructive input, you are still at the top off what youbdo and how you do it, respect sir, God bless, 🙏 ( sam, Belfast Northern Ireland)

The pot stand works well with a frying pan. Try frying some bacon and eggs instead.

This! I guess the height of the stand helps to regulate the heat against a frying pan or pot for frying or reheating food, which would just burn if closer to the burner jet. Or the model reviewed is defective.

For the next video, try having the two stoves side-by-side so we can see the difference in the fins. Do a boil test of the two stoves too!

Hi Luke! I was excited to see you review something that I owned. I am concerned that maybe the X3 however is a bad model. I have the X2 that I bought in 2021. After watching your review, I couldn't help but think, "does mine really take 6 min to boil?" So, I just went and grabbed it. It's roughly 37°F where I live in KS. Started with very cold water, warm canister... it only took me 2½ min to boil .5L of water in the provided pot. This may be longer than Jetboil, but for the price ($70 then and now on Amazon) that's worth it to me. I'm thinking that it's probably not fair to condemn all of the models based off of your review of one of them. I love your channel and watching your adventures! Thanks for your time.

The pot stand was meant for cooking ie a frying pan! If you want to boil water, use the pot that is provided.

Agreed... The distance between the burner and the bottom of a frying pan when using that attachment is perfect, as it means that the burner doesn't cause a small hot spot in the middle of the frying pan and the heat spreads more evenly...

I can see your point depending on the frypan material (SS or Ti or aluminum) and the heat pattern gained by the raised height, but with an aluminum pan, which is not as prone to hotspots, why not just reduce the intensity of the heat with the gas adjustment control?

If you want your igniter to work, don’t turn it on full blast! Just a little at a time until it lights.

Hey Luke, I have the X3 and I really have not had any issues with it. The pot stand works great with their non stick skillet and I have made many meals that way. The fact that they include the pot stand is great because that is a separate purchase from Jetboil. I had many issues with the Jetboil stash that is why I sought this one out. I actually burned the top of my hand with the stash due to its lid coming off during a pour. Also, the boil times are subjective in my opinion because some folks don’t mind to wait. Again these, are just my opinions but you did ask us to comment. I am not saying this one is the best in the world, but I think I have lower expectations about it. LOL Great first view though

I also don't mind the wait. I find that the isobutane fuel seems to last a long time, I used a small can for an entire season and it's still got some juice. EDIT: I have the X3

I've had the same issue with stash lid detaching from the kettle. I contacted my local jetboil retailer for warranty and they sent me the minimo lid. I cut lil plastic parts off so it would fit and it won't come off after boilinh or pouring. I like the stash pot so i often use it with soto windmaster stove.

Maybe it just didn't like the specific formulation of gas he was using. Also the fact that it's been cold as hell in Virginia lately, which is known to affect the performance of canister stoves. I suspect it may have been too cold to use that stove effectively without an inverted canister.

I have the Firemaple Polaris model of this Jetboil knockoff. The Polaris has a regulated stove. I've never had a problem with mine. The pot support of the Polaris is much shorter, keeping your pot very close to the flame. I don't think their products are bad, but after owning some higher-end stoves, I won't go back to cheaper stuff unless I'm confident that it will perform well. Anyone looking for a less expensive Jetboil alternative should look at the Bulin BL100-B15 stove and 1.5 liter pot combo. It has several video reviews here on KZfaq. I just bought that setup and it is far better than the Firemaple. In the reviews of the Bulin system, people are boiling 1 liter of water in less than 2 minutes. It is also way better for using your own large pots and skillets. Highly recommend you check it out!

2nd that on the Polaris model. Boiled full container, over 1 liter ,in about 3-4 min in 35 Deg ambient temperature with 12 mph winds. I have zero complaints

You can’t always trust online reviews as many are generated by bots or otherwise written/paid for be the company. This is an issue on company websites and sites such as Amazon. Also many companies will remove negative reviews.

Hey Luke, thanks for the review. But I can’t understand why everybody’s in such a hurry to boil water. When I’m out in the woods, I’m out to relax and take my time and be laid-back, so it doesn’t matter how long it takes for water to boil for me. But you get what you pay for

It's a crude measure of fuel efficiency. The longer it takes to boil water, the more fuel it's burning to do it. That's why people care about it. Thing is, these stoves are notoriously poor performers in cold weather, regardless of who makes them. It was pretty cold that day if his choice of clothing is any indication and his water was probably cold, too, so a boil test in those conditions isn't going to match the factory test that's done in ideal conditions. He really ought to take it in the house and let it warm up and not try to boil ice cold water with it. The results will probably be much better.

I have had one for over a year and it works fine for me. Granted, I usually use the included pot and not the raised accessory. You might want to get another model and give it a comparison.

Got my Jetboil Flash on clearance at Field & Stream for $49.95 several years ago. Always wanted one but couldn’t justify the price till it was on clearance. Crazy thing is it was back on the shelf at the full price two weeks later. Never had an issue with it. I bought the Fire Maple Saturn stove after seeing you use it in a previous video. I wanted a portable yet larger stove and so far it has been absolutely fantastic. No issues whatsoever. I have several small cheap stoves and so far none have actually given me any problems. I don’t use them weekly so they’re not overused for sure. I understand time and fuel conservation are big issues but it seems like the build quality of this stove is very well worth the price. I’d be curious to see what Fire Maple says.

The title of this video changed while I was watching it. Originally, this was referred to as a "disaster". I guess that was a bit overstated. No disaster occurred. It just performed poorly. I would hardly call this "the worst", since one stove on this channel was tested and shown to be a major fire hazard.

I use their FMS 300T tiny stove and love it. Inexpensive and fits into a Toaks 750 pot with fuel, stand and little pot holder made from a 2.5x2.5" piece of leather. I have a Jetboil, but doesn't fit into my ultralight regime right now.

I used my fire maple stove multiple times. Even at 34f and it boiled my water quickly without issues. At the price offered. There’s absolutely nothing the jetboil has on it.

I'm in the UK and I have a near identical stove from a store called Go Outdoors (also available on Amazon). It's called the OEX Tacana. It's great for boiling water in the pot provided. When I tried to reheat a chilli I brought from home in a different pan it took a long while. So not only did my experience match your findings but you've explained to me the problem. Great video, really informative. Thanks so much.

I commented once already, but actually tested my Fire Maple just a short hour ago outside at 32 degrees F. Boiled two cups water for instant coffee which comes to 12oz in just under two minutes, close enough to say two minutes. Just cold, not as windy as when you tested yours. Then boiled two cups water at 16oz for some noodles. That did take longer at 2.5 to 3 minutes, and in the short time seen the fuel was already being effected by the temperature. I'm sure it's not the best, but the best for what I need. Good review giving someone something to think about. Look forward to more reviews, and some Winter camping ones since I find I hate the cold. Keep safe.

You do a good job. Suzzie does too. To test a system for comparison with specifications, it should be tested in a similar manner. Granted "real world" testing will be different but if you are going go compare items, it would be good to use the same conditions for all of the systems being tested.

I have used mine in altitudes over 15000ft (Andes) for two years. The flame will be put down depending on the wind, but overall the boiling times where adequate. For the price I did consider a good choice at the time, but I will try to compare it with something else to make sure I am not carrying too much extra fuel without a need

I was looking at the fire maple mars as the radiant burner is much less noisy than the jet style burners which seem to get on my nerves first thing in the morning when I want a quiet cup of coffee. Would be interested to see your thoughts on it

Hi Luke, I've had the X2 for a couple of years but only used it to boil water for which it worked fine. I've never timed it or used the pot stand. It would be a better comparison to see side by side against a jet boil but also testing out the additional jet boil pot stand which I believe is an option that has to be purchased separately whilst the firemaples is included. What are your thoughts on this for further testing?

Hello Luke. I have a FireMaple and like it. I have suggested it to others as I found it to be very well made. But, I have a preference for the Soto stoves that you have reviewed, and your reviews have convinced me that Soto is a superior product. Thank you for the great reviews, and keep well. I have one of these stove and have had it for a while. I have a recurring and random problem with it: Occasionally, when I screw on a fuel canister, the fuel will not feed into the stove. It's like something is clogged. I can swap fuel canisters and it may or may not happen again. I've cleaned it out and ensured there is no dirt or debris in the mating mechanisms but the problem randomly persists. Needless to say I don't use it because it just isn't reliable. My use case is for this stove - or it's replacement - to allow me to make a cup of coffee or a small meal when I'm out riding an electric unicycle. That, only to say: I would have used it at least twice a week and only to boil water but it was never reliable enough. Thanks for the review, it somewhat confirms that my stove's problem isn't me.

A SOTO Amicus and an HE pot ( mine is from Widesea) will accomplish this in a about a third of the time. More flexible and way better quality.

I use a Soto Windmaster and a Olicamp XTS pot. I use the 4 prong pot rest, but will likely swap to the 3 prong. I should be able to slip the 3 prong pot rest inside the heat exchanger fins to lock the system in better. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s half the cost of a jetboil, and it does boil faster and use less fuel. The lid needs a small handle on top to make it easier to remove when water gets to a boil.

My Firemaple Star X2 performs very well. Maybe there are some consistency issues?? I like mine and plan on continuing to use it.Maybe their quality control can improve.

I have a Fire Maple 1Lt XK6 pot - apart from the lid slightly melting (I was aware the silicone can melt), it's performed really well.

The figures refer to boiling water using the provided pot with the heat exchanger. The height of the adaptor is likely to allow the heat to spread more evenly across a frying pan for which it is intended.

Luke love your videos, I have one of the very small firemaple stoves but haven't used it enough to say if its good. I would venture to say testing a stove is far more than boil time. Maybe run the stove on a full small canister at full blast until empty so we can see run time giving us a better idea of efficiency. I would also prefer to see if the stove has good adjustability or just boils water. Thanks for all you do.

I have a similar model. It has been stellar for the past year plus. I have not timed the boil to make my tea at camp, but as a seasoned moto camper, I think you got a bad model. A few friends that I often camp with have various stoves and one has a Jet boil. We often start making our morning drinks at the same time and I never felt I was waiting longer than them for it to boil. Interested to hear your follow up as well as from Fire Maple. Thanks for testing and reviewing so many products.

I think I would purchase the Firemaple rather then a Jetboil. Cooking times are really not something I care too much about. I still use my grandfathers 80 year old Coleman 3 burner stove while camping, and I know that that thing sucks in the BTU department.

I am new to these types of stoves, however I would have concerns about how tall this system stands and worry about it falling over. I realize there is a stabilizing bracket for the fuel canister, but my concern remains the same.

I just got the X3 limited edition tiger one at .8L. I wanted the wider one which the .8L was still holds 1 litter if you fill it past the lines. But did bring to a boil 3 cups of water in 3 minutes was trying it on a noodle soup double pack cup of soup for a test. Now on a table inside not outside, but found it to get very hot, I didn't feel like I wanted to take it over medium low. Seemed to put out a lot of heat from the bottom vents. Worked for me good, but would say under good conditions. I don't think I'll be taking it out in more harsh conditions. I remember some saying when the first one came out about it melting, some catching fire on the covering of them on the first models. Works for me for my use, though would have liked to see this review before, still for the sale price I got it at buying the orange lantern after your video review of it. Got a good sale price for the one I got. Did watch other reviews on it that said it was good. I bet it is good under the right conditions, but out in the open not in a tent or other wind limiting conditions maybe not so much. Mt X2 has performed fantastically. I use it almost weekly. I have to loose-fitting slightly after screwing the fuel canister on all the way. Otherwise, it is checking itself.

I already have a small stove from coleman, fits in my Stanley container. Works great, never got into the jetboil craze, since I already had my setup. Great review and yes don't be fooled on nice looking things, they are not always what they seam.

I have the same x2 stove and it works perfectly. The pot stand is for a frying pan, it cooks really well.

I have used a Peak One stove stove since 1983 when it was given to me. Last year I bought a new one. To me, a stove is part of the camping experience and if it functions that's good enough for me. I don't time my water boils. What I look for is for "fit". Does it fit where I need it. I live and travel in my van and space is a premium commodity. While shopping for groceries in an oriental store, I found a simple canister stove for $23. It fit my small space and it does what I need it to. The Peak One fits nicely into my backpack and it works well for my needs. I will not buy products that are the latest and the greatest.

I have a Jetboil with the pot support. It must be the original Jet Boil because I purchased it approximately 15 years ago for under $50.00 and I love it. it does not have a piezo igniter and the fuel adjuster is just a small black plastic knob but it still works great and from my understanding there is a lifetime warranty.

I've owned X2 for two year's now and done countless trips with it, never have had any problems and definitely better value for money than jetboil. Never tried to boil water with that stove top, but works great for frying pan. Water boils very fast with the pot. Quality of it has been good. I do admit that jetboil can be a little more efficient and faster. But there are few jetboil in my camping group and in real use, I don't really see that big of difference.

I have had the x2 for a few years, and mine boils the water in about 2 minutes. Happy with it, but I use a mini stove more often because it takes up a lot of space..

I have a near identical stove, the Companion Pro Nano X2, and it boils that amount of water in two minutes. I'm not sure why yours takes so long. A lot of reviews of these stoves I've seen online get far quicker boil times.

Suzy’s igniter, try bending the contact closer or farther from the burner, fixed mine like that 18 yrs ago, no problems since. It just got slightly bent somehow and I guess it’s a precise alignment lol

I have a Jetboil for 15 years. Still works perfect and rocks. Not good in very cold temps but that is a function of the fuel. For super cold I use the MSR Dragon fly on white gas.

I have orange X2 and it takes around 2.5 mins to boil 0.5l water...why not take out the jetboil and test them together under same condition, more objective right??

Can't figure out why he didn't use the pot that was designed for it instead of a kettle. Pretty sure that's why his times were off. He even talked about the heat sink in the beginning.

I have the X1 and it boils a half a liter of water in under 2 minutes for sure. I can usually do 5 oz for a camping meal in less than 45 seconds.

I have the Star x1. I enjoyed it so much I bought a second one. both times I only paid $45, but only got the stove, pot and a bowl. I have never used a Jetboil so I don't have anything similar to compare it to. It works better than a cook pot and the generic folding stove. So I am happy with it.

After seeing the comments from owners of this stove, I would certainly own one. Due to wider reactions rather than this apparent review. Objectively, no reason why jet boil should be so expensive, when the fire maple has more to it and presumably also makes a profit. Both manufactured in China. Whilst you may not be able to use pure propane, expect you could use an isobutane propane blend, as per jet boil and most camping gas supplies. This has a higher calorific value than isobutane alone.

I’ve had decent luck with my fire maple items. Pots and pans though. I do have a camp chef Stryker which looks to be made by fire maple. I only use for boiling water and it works very well using the pot it came with. It also came with a propane adapter and stand. No pot stand however. It was around $55 on sale at my local variety store.

Seems the pot stand isn’t meant for boiling water. How would it do cooking pancakes or eggs? A more dissipated heat seems useful for a fry pan or simmering.

been using an older fire maple set up for the last few years on all my adventures and never had issues and can boil water in less 2 minutes. and you need take in the consideration the thickness of your pot and if its a light weight pot. its never taken more then 2 minutes for me to boil or cook food on a pan. i feel it is worth it and rather spend 60 bucks then 180 bucks. but opinion may very

Picked up the Star X1 a few months back and did a boil test right away. Got .5l of cool tap water (59F) to a rolling boil on a cool afternoon in about 1:35. Weighed the canister before and after too and got about 5g difference. Spec sheet that came with the stove says .5l in 1:42 at 68F ambient using 4.5g fuel. Maybe mine's from the good pile or the Monday morning crew.😋 Unfortunately can't speak to extended field use or durability.

Hey Luke, have you considered that maybe the extreme cold may be affecting the performance of the gas canister here? As I'm sure you know, different gas formulations work better at different temperatures. And in certain cases you may need to invert the canister. It's possible that you were literally running on fumes because gas at the top of the canister wasn't vaporizing fast enough to properly feed it. You should try it again with a different gas canister, and maybe get an adapter to allow you to invert it.

I have the X1 and it's off by 30- 45 seconds depending on the weather conditions. Maybe there is an issue with the one you have? Too bad the one you have didn't come close to what was advertised. God bless and stay safe.

I’ve been using my Jetboil minimo for over 7 years, and I love it. My backpacking partner carries an MSR pocket rocket, which is also a great stove. Our experience has been that there are advantages to the JetBoil system and advantages to the MSR, depending on temp, wind conditions and what we are cooking. I’ve never found cheap knockoffs to be anywhere as good as the brand name equivalents of either design.

I got the lidl single gas burner in 2023. Have done several fry up's in wind & was done in about 5 minutes. Have used my moka coffee pot as well, & it only too 3 minutes , & that was in the open in my local forest on a windy day. I was eating & having coffee all in 10 minutes. Looks don't cook, as you said. It looks nice, but doesn't do well. Which is the whole point of it in the first place. The should give the the people who go camping & let them test any new products before putting on the market. Love you chanel 👍🇮🇪

I have the jetboil knock off from Highlander. I love it! Fantastic stove. The pot provided with the heat exchanger boils water quickly using little gas. The additional pot stand works fine with frying pans and cooking pots. In Firemaple's defence, I don't think this is a fair review in regards to the stoves overall intended uses. This is not a discredit to the channel, its an awesome channel, I love it. But I feel you might have got this one slightly wrong mate. 👍

Just an idea, in order to verify a possible problem with the components , but i don't know how possible is it - due to compatibility ... : 1 Take the pot from FM X2 and use it on a jet-boil stove - see if there is a "pot" problem.... 2 Take a jet-boil pot and use it over the FM X2 stove - to see if it's a stove problem

I've had my X2 for 3 years, have had it out in some really bad weather and it works fine. Not the fastest by any means but 500ml in about 3 to 4 minutes is quick enough for me. Works very well with the pan stand but I did find heat was concentrated in the middle so there was a bit of warping, which I solved with a ridged base pan.

I bought a FM a few years ago and I haven't had this bad level of performance even in colder temps. Not sure if something changed between then and now, but YMMV.
