Here's little run through of all the old and new Promised End levels that I did today while testing out the latest v1.02 romset.
I had a little bit of slop, and a handful of bad luck on the space sections, but only a few deaths on mazes. If nothing else it confirms we have found the right balance of scoring and lives to be able to get to the Homeworld with some clones to spare even on a "bad" gaming day.
I quit this game after the ending due to time constraints, but the levels start over again at 1 with the old school random color scheme. I probably won't be sharing any videos of higher scores until we convince the MameDev Gods to include The Promised End into regular flavor MAME for competitive purposes (WolfMAME etc).
There are some slight updates to the Level 16 and 17 mazes in this romset, and I tightened up the Reactoid timer on some earlier levels to bring it near the timing the original game had. This leaves plenty of o2 for novices to explore, and just enough for pros to collect as much yellow oxygen as they can on earlier levels after setting off the Reactoid.
This should be the final edit of the mazes I think. I have gotten them as dialed in as they can be while making it easier to progress farther and keep expert players happy along the way (I hope).
I am going to take on a 1CC run of the Tournament Edition next so keep you eyes out for that in the near future. I made those levels pretty hard so it may take a while ;)

Major Havoc is the most advanced arcade game to feature vector graphics. They put a lot of detail into everything, including Major Havoc with his antics. I played this in the arcades and it was a fun game with an interesting control scheme. Very underrated arcade game that deserves to be talked about more.

This is the only platformer I can think of that uses a trackball. And I always wondered what happens when you clear all the bricks in that mini-breakout game...

Theres a converted tempest cabinet near me that was turned into a racing game. Should i convert it into a major havoc, or back into a tempest??

This is so awesome, thank you! Great job! Are you playing this on original hardware or emulation? I remember the arcade machine had a very unique roller and don't remember any other machine using that controller. If you are using an emulator what controller are you using? Thanks again, I absolutely loved playing this game in the mid '80's.....I just wasn't that good at it😆

Glad you enjoyed it + thx! This is an EMU playback using HBMAME. I'm playing using a Groovy Game Gear Turbotwist2 dial controller. I played MH on a Tempest conversion cab when I was a kid so that feels more natural to me.

This was a TAS and Cheat free playback through to the Homeworld with lives to spare. So at least one person completed it. Granted I did design and play test all these new levels for years b4 this ;) But, I think a skilled and motivated player with the proper control setup could study this playback and pull it off esp since we got rid of adaptive difficulty and dialed down the space wave difficulty to make it much fairer than the OG arcade version. You can also earn more extra lives from the Breakout game that now resets after you clear it. I think too many people try to play this game without a dial/roller that is also setup right resolution wise. They feel like it's impossible with a keyboard/joystick...that's because it never was designed with those controls in mind.

Why do you skip the O2 until after activating the reactor?

Because they are worth more points when they turn yellow... Oxoid (Purple): 100 points Oxoid (Yellow): 1,000 points for first, 1,200 points for second, 1,400 points for third, etc. Oxygen bonus for exiting maze is 100 points times the number of oxygen counts left.
