Yes, mental practice is important. You will struggle physically if you can't capture the information mentally. I love it when he calls out the notes by location... 1.17..."A", 1.19..."B" If you know your fretboard in a certain the confusion fades, which allows your creativity to step forward.

I've been picking up and putting down my guitar for 20 years because I never progressed at all. Never could play a whole song due to solo fright. You make learning this easy and fun and it instills confidence in my playing. Your wind cries Mary lesson made possible my first complete song possible. I'd listen to the allman brothers and thought I'd never be able to play those up and down the neck scales but you just shatters that feeling with this lesson. I know a lesson on this isn't new, there's probably 1000 on here but I love the way you teach and can slow down in the middle of a lick and show it all. I just wanted to say thank you and please keep them coming.

Same here I started playing 10 years ago, now I ashamed I know almost nothing about theory, I always had only very good techniques, so I could learn any song. But after a while I realised this is not music, and Im stucked with scales years before, so I stopped playing... now I start the whole learning again, it's never too late :D

I am not a beginner but I am was self taught and unfortunately I wasn’t a good teacher. Your videos fill in the portion that I never quite got right. I also love that you don’t edit out mistakes because every guitarist makes them and many newer players get frustrated watching KZfaq lessons because the person presenting edits their videos to be flawless. That isn’t to say that they aren’t good or cannot play a piece flawlessly but I guarantee most of them didn’t do it in one take. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and presenting it in a way where even those of us who have been playing for years can see and understand things that maybe eluded us.

So if I were wanting to play in the key of A MAJOR, I would essentially be playing the F-sharp minor scale patterns? I would just be using the 'A' notes for roots rather than the "F' notes, correct?

I have enjoyed your videos so much that I have gotten to the point where I just watch each one no matter the topic or how complicated they are but always seem to learn more each time! Thanks Marty Shwartz' Music! I also got a kick out of the 13B point in this one and the gasp of disgruntled frustration that you didnt edit out because "it happens." I have really gotten alot out of your videos thank you for taking the time out of your busy life to make these awesome how-to videos! I feel like I'm starting to fill in the void of music I have been missing my whole life and your videos are the first ones I was able to really understand the lingo and started to take off!

OK, so I just had a light bulb moment that I have got to tell you about Marty. When you were explaining using the pinky on the root C for the major pentatonic, (the 5th shape I think) and going up the scale I thought "man, where do I know that sound from?" Then I got it, The Temps, Wish it Would Rain! Started messing around with it for a minute and realized it's just a 1,4,5 progression C, F & G with the pinky starting on the root of each chord and climbing up to the octave in a 12 bar blues pattern. I hope I'm conveying this correctly. Brilliant! So simple and yet so beautiful. Thanks a million amigo! Looking forward to really absorbing the remainder of this video. Later, Dave in the Adirondacks
