A new report into the rising temperatures of the world's oceans has discovered that this problem is more serious than we originally thought.
For more, visit our website: www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/...
The story
A report compiled by 80 scientists from 12 countries says the global impact of ocean warming has been severely underestimated.
The study launched by the International Union for Conservation of Nature suggests that climate change is pushing plankton, jellyfish, turtles and seabirds into waters previously too cold to support them.
Dan Laffoley - BBC News
This warming has real consequences for us and our livelihoods. One of the things which is different with this report than anything we've done before is taking this comprehensive view.
One of the priorities should be actually to build on this report, to have a discussion around the evidence that we're showing and actually then to work to, to plan for the future with the information that we know we'll need to be able to cope when we see [a] progressive changes from a warming ocean.

@jinounglee3956
@jinounglee3956 7 жыл бұрын
hello,welocme to news review. the program we give you words and phrases to help you to talk about the news. Hi, Im Sian and joining me today is Catherine. Hi Catherine? Hi Sian. what's story do you have for us today? Ok, Sian, today's story is a quite worring one. and has to do with world ocean. ok, Let's listen to this world BBC news. ================================================= A report compiled by eighty scientists from twelve contries says global impact of ocean warming has been severely underestimated. the study launched by international union for conservation of nature suggested climate change is pushing the plankton , turtles and seabirds into waters that was previoulsy too cold to support them. ================================================== ok, scintiests around world are agreeing that the warming of the world ocenans is more serious than they previously thought. and some evidence for this is the fact that they discovered the animals that live in the sea are moving to different part of the ocean because of the changing of temperatuer. Oh, I have noticed more jellyfish in the ocean this summer. ok, that's a worring story. what words and phrases are being used by news sites online to talk about the story? ok, today we're going to look at "soring"," plummeting" ,"staggering" and a phrase we're going to look at is "bear the blunt of" ok, how are these words appearing in the headlines? ok, let's start with soaring we've got the Guardian website, which tells us that "Soaring ocean temperature is greatest hidden challenge of our generation" ok, soaring here means rising quickly so what does this word come from? it comes from actually, it's to do with flying in the sky. so birds that go up into the sky high in the sky up and up and up we say they are soaring. we can also usd it to talk about airplane, which take off and then soar into sky ,so we're looking at a long upward movement in the air so we take that a literally and then use it idiomatically to say something which is going up and up and up either in direction or numbers or quantity it's soaring. it's often used to talk about numbers , isn't it? on a graph , the number is going up , they are soaring. yeap. prices are soaring, sales are soaring, in the headline it's used as an adjective we can also use it to talk about it as a verb. to soar, absolutely S.O.A.R to soar. so they soared as well. temperatures soared in England in the summer. they did actually , we did. a few days. not particularly long. ok, how about the next adjective , what else you've found? ok, next adjective we're going to look at in the national geographic website, and the word is "plummeting" so plummeting here means falling quickly and suddenly. so it's the oppisite of the soaring essentially yes it's pretty much direct opposite, yeah, the first meaning of plummeting is to fall through the air that bird goes up and up and up and then some reason they got shot #%$$^$% hopefully not. and then something horrible happened to the bird and falls, nothing stops it. plummeting means falling with nothing to help you slow down you're just falling down directly. so we use it with direct meaning. and we have idiom to mean , falling steeply and quickly. so if numbers plummet, they don't gradually decrease they fall dramatically. the uses of plummeting fish stocks ,it doesn't mean that fish are falling it means numbers of fish are falling ,they are fewer and fewer fish in the ocean. ok, and this is not for only number you can talk about moral plummeting or yeah, big (redundency) or something really bad happens and the other way to stop to feel plummet ( this part is quite confusing me :-) ) ok, and how about the next word that you found? ok we have staggering the next one. so we're going back to Guardian ok, staggering here means very shocking and surprising so it's another extreme adjective, isn't it? it is another extreme adjective , it's actually another adjective which is related to movements so if you stagger, it means you can't walk very well. usually because maybe you had a drink maybe something really shocking happened ,aahaha I can't believe that you can't walk , not balanced not even any movement and so idiomatically if something is staggering it really shocks you. so it literally ahahahahaahha. so when you came in , the other day , and then shouted at me at work. you are horrible lady. ( not even any emoji I couldn't find to suit this moment, sorry!!! ) I was actually staggered . I was staggered, I was staggered. so you can use it as an adjective to describe not only this thing your behavior was staggering , I was staggered staggered by my staggering behavior. I was staggered by your staggering shouting Sian. it wasn't really very nice. ( ) it can be positive, it can be nagative and ( ). we never use it in a positive sense , isn't it? not generally,no. it's usually, because it's sort of stops you ( ) it's something kind of wow where are that come from? me getting angry and shouting wasn't positive thing. not really , it wasn't nice exprience. ok how about the phrase we found? bear the brunt of, Ok, so National Geographic again. ok, this comes from phrase "bear the brunt of" and that means to suffer the worst part or fact , something bad or harmful. so what here is the bad ,harmful thing we're talking about? ok, the bad and harmful thing is global warming. and it's had an effect on many, every aspect of human life on the plaent. so global warming has an effect on the sky , the air, the mountains, the enviorenment , the cities, the rivers. but the worst effect is on our waters. so this is expressed by saying our waters have borne the brunt of global warming. meaning the worst effect of global warming has been on the water. according to this headline. I've also had a lot of with anger so for example the other day. when I came in and shouted at you. I didn't shout everyone elses as much. I shout barely at you. so you bored the brunt of my anger. I got the worst of your anger, ( $^%%#%$%&^%%# ) Im coming out very badly this story. I bored the brunt of your anger. because you shouted at everybody but you shouted most at me , Sian. and I shoud be putting in the complain. I think that's justified. ( Who else wanna look at Sian shouting loudly, LMAO, lol , ) ok, now let's listen to the report from ( ) who is marine biologist. and he is talking about the soaring temperature of the ocena. and what we should do next. =================================================== this warming has real consequences through our life here. one of the things which is different with this report to them anything we've done before is taking this comprehensive view one of the priority should be actully to bulid on this report to have a discussion around evidence we're showing and then actually to work to plan for the future with information that we know we all need to be able to cope when we see of aggresive changes on the ocean. ==================================================== out of time. thans bbcle, Sian, Catherine. everyone in the world wherever you are. have a good day. see you later.
