HERE ARE THE LYRICS FOR ALL TO ENJOY : Standing there alone, the ship is waiting All systems are go, are you sure? Control is not convinced But the computer has the evidence No need to abort The countdown starts Watching in a trance, the crew is certain Nothing left to chance, all is working Trying to relax, up in the capsule "Send me up a drink", jokes Major Tom The count goes on 4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us Drifting falling Floating weightless Calling calling home Second stage is cut, we're now in orbit Stabilizers up, running perfect Starting to collect, requested data What will it effect, when all is done Thinks Major Tom Back at ground control, there is a problem Go to rockets full, not responding Hello Major Tom, are you receiving Turn the thrusters on, we're standing by There's no reply 4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us Drifting, falling Floating, weightless Calling, calling, home Across the stratosphere A final message, "Give my wife my love" Then nothing more Far beneath the ship, the world is mourning They don't realize, he's alive No one understands but Major Tom sees Now the light commands, this is my home I'm coming home Earth below us Drifting falling Floating weightless Coming home Earth below us Drifting falling Floating weightless Coming home Earth below us Drifting falling Floating weightless Coming coming home Home Home Home Home Home Home Home Home.......

In an Isaac Asimov anthology, I read a short story based on this. Or maybe Bowie based his song on the short story.... I don't know. At the end, when he knows he is entering the Earth's atmosphere and will burn up, the astronaut thinks, "I wonder if my life has been worth anything. Have I made anyone happy? Will I ever make anyone happy? I wonder if anyone will see me at my re-entry?" The last paragraph describes a man and his son, watching the night sky. The man exclaims, "Look! A shooting star! Quick....make a wish!"

Whatever could have possessed this guy to write this song? It's not bad, but just so odd that anyone would lift such a well known story from a more famous (and better) artist. Like someone writing an alternate song about Elinor Rigby or Peggy Sue. Anyone know?
@greg76564 жыл бұрын
@Sleeping So you think that was the only reason he chose to write about Major Tom? That's too simplistic an answer and lacks any insight. Something caught his interest in taking control of another artist's creation. What was it?
@greg76564 жыл бұрын
@Sleeping I get your point and your opinion - he was doing it merely to cash in - but it still seems odd to me. Of all the things to write about, this guy chooses to rewrite a classic. I can't think of another instance comparable. I don't think this is an answer track - that's a whole different beast. This is more just a rewrite. And on top of that, the fact that he lied about not having a Bowie connection - an absurd claim just on its face - only makes me more curious. Not really looking for deep meaning - I doubt very much there is anything deep about it - just curious as to what was going through his mind when he came up with the idea. "Hmm, should I retell the story of Space Oddity, Elinor Rigby or The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia?" But Sleeping, thanks for playing along with my silly thought game. I mean that sincerely.
