Majority of Island Wiped Out by Major Eruption; Ruang Volcano Aftermath

One of the strongest volcanic eruptions on the planet in the last decade occurred yesterday. As a result, a majority of a populated island was rendered uninhabited, and hundreds of homes in addition to other structures were damaged or destroyed. This video discusses the Ruang volcano's plinian eruption, which lasted for 130 minutes. However, I want to remind everyone that Ruang is still erupting, albeit at a lower intensity than witnessed on April 17th.

Ferries have already transported a portion of the elderly population, children, and women to Manado. In the upcoming days, additional ferries will transport many more people away from Ruang. Many of the houses' zinc roofs have been punctured by volcanic stones, causing rainwater to seep inside and damage appliances and furniture. It will take a few days to assess the extent of the damage in the exclusion area. Thanks for the explanation and for the support

Last night it rained again in Tagulandang, further damaging the houses. Unfortunately the weather forecast doesn't look good, new rains are expected this week. Some locals are now in Bahoi and Buhias (in the exclusion zone) trying to fix the zinc roofs... Part of my family is now safe in Manado. Some of my oncles couldn't leave last night. Priority was seniors, women and kids.

It's always good to hear that there were no casualties. But it got me thinking that if this is "just" a 4 well, I almost shudder to think what a higher VEI eruption would have looked like. A question I had though is this: Is it possible that this eruption or any other eruption could have created a landbridge and thus united these two islands? The strait between seems pretty narrow. Or would some mechanic have to come into play aswell for that to happen? EDIT: Thanks to everyone for the replies.
@rizkyadiyanto7922
@rizkyadiyanto7922 26 күн бұрын
i think it would be the opposite. when volcano explode, it will collapse and create a caldera, and the volcano island will dissappear (or most of it) under the sea. krakatoa and the tonga volcano were like this.
@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 26 күн бұрын
It will probably be hundreds to thousands of years of eruptions before a land bridge could be created to the larger island northeast of Ruang.
@SticksWithPicks
@SticksWithPicks 26 күн бұрын
That's quite unlikely simply by volume. The island is about 4km across and now approximately 700m at the summit. At the narrowest the two islands are about 1km apart and the water is reasonably deep. If the northern flank of the volcano would collapse [like Mt St-Helens for example] it would probably not be enough material to slide over that widest part of the island and into the strait to fill it all up to form a landbridge. If additionally large amounts of lava would be released after the collapse, and followed the same path as the landslide it would increase the possibility of a caldera forming, where the landmass collapses inward into the cavity that formed underground from the magma spilling out, which would in turn make all or most of the island disappear under water until the volcano builds it up again in future eruptions.

The list of volcanoes was quite interesting in revealing the basic stats about the VEI, SO2 released and so on. 500,000 tons of SO2 was reported to be released by this eruption of Mt Ruang. This seems like a lot until compared to the eruptions toward the top of the list. El Chichon produced 750,000 tons of SO2 which was enough to produce minor global cooling in 1982. Mt Pinatubo produced 12,000,000 tons of SO2 which led to a 1 F global cooling for about a year. This is an indication of the huge amount of SO2 necessary to significantly cool the climate.

OK, this video has disabused me of a long-held notion I had, and that is that effusive and explosive style eruptions just don't happen at the same time. I've often been critical of 'Dante's Peak', which showed the volcano producing vast quantities of volcanic ash Hawaiian style pahoehoe lava flows before producing a caldera-forming explosion that sent pyroclastic flows sweeping over the nearby town. Doean't happen like that, I've said, Hawaiian style lava is too fluid for it to cause a major explosive eruption. Well, looks like I was wrong, if this volcano produced a Plinian eruption with a tall ash plume, pyroclastic flows AND a lava fountain. So, I have to ask the question: how does a volcano known for explosive eruptions and associated forms of activity, get magma thin enough to produce a lava fountain?

I thought everyone had been evacuated from Ruang Island. I hope the person capturing this amazing event is OK.

All of the video is from the island to the northeast of Ruang called Thulandang about a km away. Everyone was evacuated before the big eruption.

How many feet is 3 centimeters or would that be inches? Either way, that sounds like a lot of pebbles, rocks and/or dirt. The explosions were heard how many miles? 😢

2.5 cm is approximately 1 inch. So just over an inch
