All he had to do is record it with his phone and play the video via the projector and flip the projector upside down for an inverted image. All that is needed is a projector. If you try it through his method , all you will see is a bright light entering the room , no image (not even blur)

when the child came with the camera, the camera's name is pinhole camera it is very easy to make and only takes a few steps it may be not clear but keep it in light although you'll see everything but upside-down that's all.
