Oh wow I remember making one of these using painter's drop cloths ages ago. Your tutorial is a great DIY . Only thing I would suggest - from experience - is to add a ridge pole instead of relying on your rope. While it might seem like just adding more tension to the ropes and more spikes to the bottom will be fine, any good amount of rain will make the canvas too heavy, everything will sag and you'll end up soggy. Otherwise, this is a brilliant tutorial.

such a perfect build as a person doing armored combat you can have room for a armor kit, weapon rack and a throne sized bed in there. such fantastic work man

Two things of advice for anyone interested. 1) If you plan on wearing armor at a larp, you want a tent that is tall enough for you to stand in. Crouching while putting on armor is a pain. 2) if your tent has guylines, I recommend using glow in the dark or reflective paracord (or just tying something glow in the dark or reflective to those guylines) so that you don't have people tripping over them, especially at night. Bonus tip: Boots before corset. Always.

Watching roll around on the grass made me nostalgic for the days before we had sooo many ticks. I vote for another tarp for a floor.

Love this build, I'd recommend having some sort of "floor". I've been in rain and without a floor, all your stuff will get really wet.

For waterproofing, NighthawkInLight did a video recently using silicone caulking and naptha that makes a near perfect flexible but sturdy waterproof coating that can be painted on with a thick paintbrush or roller. Not too expensive either considering it comes from things almost any major hardware store should have

I mathed it out! 7ftx8ft floor space, 6ft 3in center height.. use 3 8ftx6ft tarps and one 8ftx10ft tarp. With a coupon for the 8x6 tarps (limit 3) and a 25% discount on a single tarp for the club membership, total cost around $100. At that size its 1 6x8 + the 8x10 for the walls, and one 6x8 each for the ends, with sufficient overlap. I simply cut cardstock to the dimensions of the side walls with allowance for overlap and taped them with a piece approximating the floor, 1inch = 1 ft; then scoring the walls at a 3in/3ft height, placed it on end on a 6x8 piece and outlined a flap with overlap, aligning the corner of the tarp with one side of the wall; cutting that out left enough scrap to create a second flao without overlap and only adding a small piece at the bottom. There's still enough left over to make a line cover so you can have a little porch overhang at the top!

It's much easier to simply trim off the edges you intend to sew together, thus lessening the thickness your machine needs to go through. Any older all metal sewing machine will be more than enough to sew this #10 canvas. I recommend using V-92 thread (nylon - all weather type for sails), and needles for jeans/denim. When trimming the edges, fold them over so you have the material interlocked. Tape them together with basting tape, available at sewing centers. That will hold them while you manipulate all that fabric through the machine. Waterproof with naptha and silicone by mixing it in a large mortar tub and pushing the fabric into the mix until it is absorbed. Messy, but it works. Or, get a clean garbage can and use that. For two tarps sewn together you will need a couple gallons of naptha and four tubes of silicone. For about $100 you will have an excellent waterproof canvas tarp that will be the equal of those costing $300 - except for the cheesy grommets, which can be augmented by sewing on canvas loops adjacent to the grommets. Loops are MUCH stronger and won't cut through. When it's done, set it up and roll on more mixture if there are any "dry" areas.

If after a bit your tent does lose it water shedding abilities, you can spray( use a weed sprayer), Thompsons water sealer on it. It's normally used on wood decks to seal them against rain. I'm a living history renactor, and many people make their own tents, or even the store bought ones get the "treatment" to waterproof them. Easy to do. Do it in sunny weather.

Super dope tent, alternatives could consist of a pair 12x15 drop cloths and several cans of waterproofing spray. Total would be around 120 or so depending on how liberally you apply the waterproofing.

I’d love to see you make a pavilion tent. You can cut the square tarps into triangles and make an octagonal dome roof. I’m sure you could use painted pvc to make the wagon wheel/umbrella style support poles. Add a few more tarps hanging down and you’d have an awesome pavilion that looks a little more medieval.

To help wrangle large and unwieldy fabric like that, roll each side of your seam onto a long tube( think 2" pvc or the like). It will make things go much faster and easier. It's something a friend of mine does with blankets.

Very neat! I hate camping so this one's not likely to cross my bench anytime soon, but I'd suggest when you put in the... nose thingies (something else I was in the midst of suggesting when you brought it up!), you add in another leather patch or something to reinforce where the posts rub up against the roof.

Sewing in loops is a real pain in the butt for those mid tent tie outs. That said if you take a coin or small mouth rock, you can push it tight against the canvas from the inside, and wrap a loop around the outside, then pull the line tight. Also seal your seems, water will find a way.

I use a set of sawhorses and 4 x 8 sheet of foam insulation board as a support table when sewing long lengths of fabric on my sewing machine.

We always use Thompson Water Seal on canvas wall tents. Worked great and cheap by the 5 gallons.

Maybe you silved one of my biggest problems regarding larp there! I never even thaought about making my own tent. I'm really looking forward for the next videos.

Fabulous work here. I was less brave and went for an entry level tent from Midwest that was on a closeout for $350. Those don't come with the poles and ropes, so you still get a little crafty with it. I'm saving my creative oomph for the interior, following the same stars of "Foundit", "Thift", and "Modded" to guide me that you use on your journeys. I'd love to see your take on a Viking "A-Frame".

A monkey hut is the way to go. Its good for all seasons. Build a hoop house with PVC or tent poles. Then build a smaller hoop house inside that one using half of the space under the outer hoop. I used poly tarps for the outer hoop house. With some overhangs on the end and vents. The inner hoop house is made with canvas tarps. Never again do I have to put them away wet. Just my cheap poly tarps. Having the double wall helps tremendously in keeping it warm or cool. The outer hoop house is 8' by 12' the inner is 7' by 6' leaving an area 6' by 8' for a table and chairs. It can either be closed off, open or screened. I use a schade mesh tarp for screening the ends. They are very durable. This summer I might add 4 feet to it with the outer hoop all in mesh shade tarps making an open screen room! So easy to make. Strong in winds. Spacious! 5:06

Thinking you should combine this with the backpack. For larping events. That way you can carry more. That would be even more awesome

Love the build, but I recall someone using chemicals you can buy at harbor freight to make waterproof tarps from bed sheets... was curious if you would do something like that. Would likely be far cheaper and lighter than this one so I'm sure you could make it much bigger for say a war tent (not sure what the strategy tent would be called with all the maps sprawled in the center).

Fun note Tandy leather can order you Reindeer pelt that can be used for bedding/blanket... OMFG you will not be disappointed by these Reindeer pelts either insanely soft and THICK

I made my own tent with the Harbor Freight tarps. I used three 8x10 tarps. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

I bought one of these to make a waxed canvas rucksack,really heavy duty canvas and alot cheaper than buying it by the yard.Thanks

I think you did an amazing job. I do 19th century living history with white canvas and my group has some standard military pattern "wedge" tents which is what you made. Your pattern is pretty well spot on, save for one thing. Those use a ridge pole across the two end poles with vertical pins that go through the ridge pole and out the top of the tent through grommets. With that structure no guylines are needed. We just run stakes down each side and stand it up. Standard issue was 6' long and 6' tall with 4 stakes down each side, and two more across the back. 4 infantrymen would sleep head-to-foot across the width of these tents like sardines. For your size i would recommend 5 or 6 stakes down each side, and about 3 across the back. You dont even have to pin the ridge pole, just let it rest on top of the notches you have and poke out those end gaps you left and I bet you wouldnt need any guylines at all.

I used the silicone and micro center to seal canvas is mix it in the pan and brush it on with a brush that soaks in pretty readily when you get the right ratio and waterproof it for a while

Amazing video. I've seen those at Harbor Freight and thought about doing it. The sewing part is my biggest hurdle since I don't have a machine to punch canvas like that other than my two hands.. Anyways I look forward to seeing your future larp builds.

Linseed oil will water proof canvas. It's what they use to make oil cloth. Saturate the canvas with the Linseed oil, then let dry. Repeat 4-6 times and ta-da water proof. The canvas can be used for everything from clothing and tents to sails.

Need to make a small rope bed to go with that tent. Used to have a good piece together one when I did ren-fares back in the day.

I've waterproofed canvas tents with Thompson's sealer and a one gallon sprayer.

If you find a way to anchor the to poles you can use a hammock in that tent.

Love the work mate but I was thinking you might want to add a sod cloth and bug netting in the hole in the door Also you should take a look at a Icelandic patrol tent for ideas also you need to relook at you guy ropes and pole setup for the size of you canvice cause if the wind picks up your tent will fly also use wood pegs(stakes) or large pegs as again big tent small pegs tent flys

Awesome! A hammock is still totally period correct, provided it doesn't look like rainbow nylon. I too hammock camp.

If you have an awning company near you they sell marine grade canvas sealant. I'd recommend investing in a gallon of it to waterproof it just a bit better. Get one of those garden pump sprayers fill it up and go to town.

I have a suggestion for a project: I'd love to see you make a traditional French/ Italian style tassel. Wooden form, fringe held in place by wires, wrapped with your choice of decorative materials and suspended from a twisted rope. The colors in the rope should be reflected in the fringe. I realize this leaves the field pretty wide open for what it will look like, but I'd be fascinated to see what you would do with it! Consider the suggestion. Thanks!!

Take one of those tarps and paint he back with flex seal and use it on the floor and you won't have to worry about dew or any rain water that may puddle in the tent. In a sense it's like the old civil war gum blankets. I did two layers of flex seal that's 1 1/2 quarts

I would suggest a tarp as a ground cloth cause ground is damp and makes sleeping interesting… and uncomfortable. And cold. And damp. So…

If you shortened your poles... you would create more hip shoulder room with a more vertical bottom wall. Experiment with Bottom Width on Ends... to pull it further out on Bottom Mid Point Grommets... more hexagonal Videos are awesome, fun to watch.

I have painter's drop clothes from HF and a can of linseed oil. Now I'm just waiting on my sewing machine (same as yours), then to pick up some mineral spirits and a bucket and I'll have a 9'x12' wall tent, 7' at the peak with 4' walls. I had to wing it while standing at HF due to the selection of sizes (trigonometry in public, yay!) so we'll see how it goes. All-in: $250, including sewing machine.

I wanna make a smaller one that I can stitch onto a messenger bag kinda thing so I can set it up and use the bag as a pillow then in the morning fold it up and tuck it into the back of the bag.

You use two ladders as feed tables. Roll into the seam, then one ladder sloping towards the machine. Another sloping away. The slope & gravity will feed the material nicely.

I used to work at a summer camp with canvas tents roughly the same style but kept the grommets (the hole for tie down) and knotted the lower corners together to keep it low cost wind resistant

Super cool project. I think I would opt for more of a style type tent. Even with a small budget and some 3d molding one could make an hexagon type tent and still be stick to with in the 8 tarps size. Either way super cool for what you had to work with.

I was thinking on making the same exact tent but I was going to cut out the grommets where I was sewing. Then I was going to water seal the seams just to be safe.

As a former boy scout and current Soldier, you might want to work out some kind of flooring. Sleeping in the mud sucks. Cots sink and become unlevel, muddy shoes get on everything, and having a barrier between you and and outside keeps the creepy and crawling out of your shoes

Just found your stuff and let me tell ya, absolutely phenomenal! So! To add my appreciation, how about a projekt idea? Since you already have a bunch of leather gear, how about some Gambeson armor? If you wear the leather on top, it looks just that much more epic!

Three poles (two uprights and one ridge role), your HF tarps, and some very basic geometry (Pythagoras FTW) plus very basic sewing skills = basic tent like your $400-800 model. Very like the one you made. And you can use the same canvas. I use ordinary lumber from Home Depot. Cutting things to size and adding a ridge pole makes it a lot easier to make things TIGHT and more water/wind resistant. You can also sew in a floor, which makes a lot of things easier, from setup to use. A simple wedge tent like that is useful for larping or SCA. (I'm SCA and have made several tents, from these to more complicated ones.)

I used two canvas drop cloths at 8 bucks a peice, I used one container of boiled linseed oil ($8) and a thing of turpentine($7) to water proof it! Check out townsends videos, they do 1700-1800’s historical re-inactment

I think i might just try to make one of these. Probably not as big though, maybe just big enough to keep a bed and my kit in. Thinking about it, I've seen "viking" portable shelves (kinda like a symmetrical stepladder with planks across the rungs. Probably not actually viking) that are triangular when viewed head on that could be made specifically to fit in one end to keep stuff on, can even tie it to the pole to prevent it falling over if thats a concern. Just need to find some good (inexpensive) cloth for it. I love yours though, if i had the space on my bike i would make one about that big.

You need a groundcover of some kind for it. Perhaps a cot or two that can be hauled with you for rather than sleeping on the ground.

I have had one of these on my tractor it repels water well but fades quickly in the sunlight.

To water proof any canvases use the clear only silicone and mineral spirits 1-1 dissolve the silicone completely into the mineral spirits and only then completely soak in a metal tub thel lay out to completely dry it will be 100% water proof for years. And it is permanent.

Use seam tape on the areas you stitched so it can be fully waterproof

harbor freight has drop cloth for pretty cheap, do you think that could be water proofed?
