Thank you so much. When a video idea isn't recommended by a viewer, we usually ask ourselves, what do we wish someone told us when we got started? Thanks again, it means a lot.

Fantastic videos!! My issue is what specifically do you use for canvas? There’s like 20 types of them. I am wanting to make a fly for the unit. Any help would be great thank you !!!

First of all this video is a great instructional as always! Thank you guys so much. I’m currently looking at starting a USSS impression (and I’m in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley so i get asked “why a yankee impression” a lot haha) after seeing your videos and reading the history of the unit. With this one I’m worried because a bit over 6 feet tall so I wonder, would taller soldiers use a gum blanket to extend the length of a dog tent if they were taller than the 5.5 foot(ish) of these shelter halves? Or would carrying two halves and sleeping diagonally work better? Thank you.

Great question. Don't feel alone, according to enlistment papers, Company D had a man your height and I'm sure had similar struggles. I just recently built a winter quarters using a dog tent roof and while taking measurements using 4ft tall uprights on the tent, I found the width of the tent at the base was 8 feet. They're short lengthwise but by lowering the upright you can gain width and just sleep width-wise. Wyman White of Co. F, after Fredericksburg got two complete dog tents off of a body so he and his comrade could make a longer tent by buttoning the tents on end. We show that in our dog tent setups video. Keep us posted if you have more questions, we'll be happy to help you along your way.

Thought of another question. The instructions call for “medium weight cotton thread for seams and hems”. I can’t find a straight answer online for what is medium weight. I have some size 50 cotton thread from Walmart is this adequate or should I look for something else?
@CompanyD2ndUSSS

Another amazing question! That should work. I use natural cotton Gutermann thread in I believe size 50. I can't attest to it's exact historical accuracy, though. It seems to match well and holds up great. If you're looking for a definitive answer you could see if Wambaugh and White could answer your question. Burnley and Trowbridge could also lend a hand with a question like that. Keep in touch if we can help more and the best of luck on your tent! Feel free to share a pic on our Facebook page when you finish.

I did some digging in the records and found that and I worked with a store called TheStampPress. The customer service was amazing. They made the contractor stamp for me and a large stamp for a Remington ammo label.

1 Sgt a couple suggestions. I've done both and both are good.Use GORILLA double sided tape to secure rolled up long material (small strip 1/4 wide) so you can manipulate it. Small piece each end. Also get a small magnetic bowl to hold pins. Can use the GORILLA double sided tape and stick it to the sewing machine. It can be vertically set it is magnetic. Then pull the pins and put them on the bowl. Drop one on the floor and find it with your foot to add $600 to your project. Love these how to videos.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jZyBgdeCntG2lYE.html, Sarge check out this olde button stitch, it's like a blanket stitch but adds knots to protect the fabric edge. Just a tip, it might help you and it deffinately looks original or hand sewn... might help in the grommet hole also, ATB Sarge have a good day. Sorry Sarge, didn't watch the whole thing first. Saw the stitch you used on the grommet and commented too soon haha although she uses doubled thread. cya
