You used "Punish" you said but I wonder, if there might be better saturators for this aproach. When I looked for comparisons I only found examples where people show saturators on pop music but not on orchestras so it's hard to get an overview.

@@niclasnightflame Hey, great question. That happens so often, you look at plugin demos and it rarely demos anything on strings for example haha. I used Punish because it is pretty mild and transparent before the final push, which makes it play nicer with the more acoustic and natural sounds of the orchestra. I do have a range of other saturators, like Coldfire and Culture Vulture plugins from Arturia, the Abbey Road saturator from waves, etc, but I find these work best when I am actually working on a rock or pop track. For orchestra, I find preamp channel strips offer the best tone. They offer subtle saturation that creates warmth, while still allowing them to breathe. There are so many to choose from, Waves, Arturia, for example, but anything that is marketed as a "channel strip" will be what you are looking for. Some of the Softube and Universal Audio ones are really nice, though expensive, and the Waves ones offer cheaper alternatives. Otherwise, Tape saturators can also be a great option. Waves Factory have a great cassette one, the Abbey Road J37 tape machine is also really nice, and loads more from other companies, like Baby Audio. All in all though, that is what I'd be looking for when it comes to the orchestra, mild saturation from channel strips or tape. Hope this helps!

I'm a total noob and not the most qualified person to answer this, but I would probably recommend making a few other very minor alterations, based on what common sense would tell you to expect from a separate instrument section: Adjust the pitch by a VERY tiny amount (like only a few cents), use a slightly different panning position, maybe EQ the high end a bit to give the impression of being further back or closer up in the mix (or use the mic placement mix controls, if ya got em), etc. I recently purchased Pacific Strings from Performance Samples, and someone suggested a similar trick to deal with the fact that the library doesn't have a 2nd violins section; He simply altered the 1st violins patch using the methods I mentioned, and it works like a charm. I probably wouldn't even use that delay trick, unless you try it and think it sounds good... To my thinking, that would probably just make it sound thicker, or slightly more stereo -- but ultimately, all that matters is if it sounds good to you. The best way to find out what works for your own unique needs is to experiment!

Hey Peter, great question and Synchromystic Media has also shared some great points on this topic. The challenge when trying to increase the sound of the library is that if we just double the parts, it would simply amplify what is already there, because everything is played exactly the same. You could use the Haas stereo technique to widen the sound, duplicating the tracks and setting one between 10-30ms delayed, but that would just adjust the stereo width, rather than the feeling of getting more players in the room. I kind of think of it the same way vocalists in pop tracks approach "gang vocals" or group vocal sections. They sing a couple close to the mic, a couple further away, a couple with their nose pinched, a couple whispered, etc. Every time the timbre is changed. Pitch variations could help, adjusting the velocity (to mimic that "whisper" technique), these could help. Though, if you really want the feeling of more players in the room, I find nothing beats combining libraries. I often combine two or more libraries of the same instrument or section, giving it a different feeling all together. For example, BBCSO and Novo Strings together creates a more full and airier sound than just one of them by themselves. I also often add 8dio's intimate strings to more full libraries, which gives the attack more bit than they would have had. See what you have on hand or which free libraries out there you can get and try and combine these to thicken the texture. It's like recording guitar double tracks, nothing beats having two different guitars and recordings rather than duplicating the same guitar line.

Haha hopefully not. I think they will see the well intending spirit of the video. They do some incredible work with their free Labs range, so I think they understand that not everyone can rush out to buy their big libraries. Tips like these can hopefully help in the meantime.

Hey, someone else did also mention this as well and I think it might have something to do with other BBC versions. I own the BBCSO Pro, so I think when I switch it back to the "discover" version, it has a couple of extra articulations. Which is strange, the whole idea of switching versions was to be able to share your sessions with others who didn't have the paid version, but I'm not sure 🤷‍♂️
