Here is how we were able to fit a bigger washer and dryer in the same old space. Our DIY solution was making a pedestal that allows us to vent the dryer out the bottom and gives us two drawers for storage. Included are a couple of tips on how we solved problems along the way.

wow, was not expecting dovetails, and in plywood no less. very impressive!

Thanks! I practice dovetails and joinery techniques any chance I get. Plywood drawers are no exception , and in some ways made it easier.

I was surprised about the dovetails as well. So.....I kept watching! Great job, my washing machine is acting up and it won’t be long for a replacement, may have to build a pedestal similar to this very soon. Thank you, this is very helpful.

This turned out to be so much more than I was looking for. Very nice dovetails!

Thanks for the compliment, Mark! Of course, the drawers can also be made with much simpler joints. Box joints and plenty of glue, rabet and tongues (with the sides being where the groove is and the inside of the front and back the tongues), and many other options. I hope you found it helpful and maybe you’ll check out some of our other videos! Thanks for watching! Post a photo of your completed pedestal when you’re done. Love to see what you make!

I like your idea for this pedistal. Amazon has magnetic dryer vent connection. It helps in tight spots like yours.

I realize this video has been out awhile. I love the idea we have issues with the size of our laundry room as well. By any chance do you have a video on how to vent the dryer out of the bottom? Love your style!!! Thank you
@SkyValleyStudio
@SkyValleyStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don’t have that video. Check your dryer manual to see if there is a knock-out plate. We had a hard time getting the plate out, and each dryer has its own way of getting to the venting and rerouting the internals to vent down instead of sideways. Good luck!! Hope you found the rest of the video helpful!

@@SkyValleyStudio Thank you so much for your quick response!!!! I appreciate it! I did find the spot where you can add a down vent to our dryer. With a little bit of research I did find the how to. I may have to make my own vent kit though. Everyone is sold out. LOL One other question. I believe you said your height of your platform is 10". Is this correct? I realize I can make this my own, however I love how yours is set up. Thanks Again!!

Yes, ours is 10” tall, but plan what you will use the drawers for. We have green coffee beans for roasting in ours! Sometimes an extra inch can make a huge difference!

Great video, question: if your washer is on the second floor and has the drip pan how would you incorporate to this diy so there's no issue for flooding.
@SkyValleyStudio

Thanks for watching and commenting! Good question! our washer is on the second floor but we don’t have a drip pan. I assume you’d put the drip pan under the washer and on top of the pedestal. Here is a link to a video on how to move it in place: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obuJdc6VupPUdmw.html

I'm trying to solve the exact same problem with my dryer exhaust and am working with my GC on a similar custom pedestal. Love your build here! Any trouble accessing the dryer exhaust duct for cleaning with this approach, or are you happy with most of the rigid duct hidden "permanently" in the box? Edit: Also curious how you secured the ducting on the bottom? Are you able to reach in through the box with drawers removed?

Nice build. What, if anything did you use to secure the machines to the base? I thought I'd take a forstner bit and cut a recess for the feet to rest in similar to LG's plastic bracket on their base. Thx Jeff
@SkyValleyStudio
@SkyValleyStudio 2 ай бұрын
We bought heavy duty rubber cups for the feet. We still get a bit of vibration with unbalanced loads. I’d recommend a lip or trim piece in front to keep the machines from walking off the pedestals for those times you don’t realize the load is imbalanced. Or screw the cups to the top before putting the machines in place. That may work even better.

Not a complaint but I would have liked to have seen how you put the top plywood on and trimmed. But I can’t pretty much see. Thanks for the videos. I was looking for bases with dryer access just like that.

The top plywood has a solid wood band tacked and glued on the edges. 3/4” thick by 1” wide (up and down) makes the top look thicker.

Do you have any issues with your dryer drying with that many turns in the exhaust?
@SkyValleyStudio
@SkyValleyStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Not really. It’s a short run and the only 90-degree bends are in the dryer itself, as designed. The rigid pipe is also better than the flexible or semi- rigid tubing in that regard.

What kind of footers did you place under the appliance feet? And have you had issues with “creep” (where the washer travels) and/or house-shaking vibration during spin / rinse cycles? By screwing into the studs behind, those vibrations can travel quite far throughout the upper floor. I’ve been pondering the use of MLV (mass-loaded vinyl) and acoustical sealant to combat some of these concerns prior to designing my own.
@SkyValleyStudio
@SkyValleyStudio Жыл бұрын
The feet are on heavy rubber discs I got on Amazon. The thicker the better. The washer has some creep even with those, but they help dampen vibrations. And the creep is only fully loaded and on high spin speed. Added a front lip to keep it more in place. Another cross Support May have helped lessen creep. Vibrations in our loft are less than when it sat on the floor. STABLE-PADS Rubber, Non-Slip Anti... www.amazon.com/dp/B07M9CVX8K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I didn’t include a cut list or plans because each laundry room is different. I don’t always work from solid plans, and just went by measurements to fit our tiny space. I’ll have to see if I can draw something up. Thanks for the suggestion.
