Turning an old file into a metal bench shear to cut round bar.
Burton Builds
S04E07
I need to cut hundreds of short pieces of 6mm BMS (from 3m long pieces). Previously I did this using an angle grinder and thin cutting disc but its a tedious, noisy and dirty job. Also each end needed to deburred before it could be further used.
A bench top shear would probably be better suited for this type of thing. I don't have one and don't really have the spare cash lying around to buy one (around $290 here in South Africa - around R4200) so thought I would make one from an old file.
I spend about a day on the whole project, start to finish, and am fairly happy with the result. In total this cost me around $1 (R15) for some HT bolt hardware and a bit of time... the rest was made from scrap I managed to acquire or was lying around.
Also thanks to a friend who helped cut holes through the file with a water jet (Don't worry if you don't have a water jet... slots can easily be cut with a grinder on which the bolts can pivot / clamp).
Lets hope the blade lasts!

Or BLO (boiled linseed oil). Heat up the unit in the oven to 250 - 300° F (lower than the hardening temperature of the blades, so it won't affect the hardness), and brush on a coat of BLO. The more coats you do, the darker it will become. Nice build.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the BLO tip... I'll give that a try. I cut a 'fishhook' in the lower blade because at the time i had access to the water jet, I only had a very rough idea of where i needed holes cut (was a very last minute thing). Once it came to the detail of mounting the blades and where i needed the 'sheering' holes, the only thing I had on hand that would cut a file was a grinder, so ended up grinding the 'fishhook' to get the sheering edge to the correct location. Would have preferred a hold though and to have retained the section above the hole for strength. This actually ended up being a week point and the lower blade split when i was trying to cut stainless steel... should have never tried that. I must have cut close to 1000 pieces of 6mm BMS but only managed to cut a few pieces of 304 Stainless before it snapped. Did an update video on this breaking... check it out at the 1 minute mark. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5d1f5N8vr7WfKc.html Guess a new design is in order.

Hi Souna Samdy, you’ll see the old file (or ‘tool’ as you say) from 02:45 onwards. It was an old file that was used and cut into 3 pieces (the 3 pieces on the left side of the picture). One piece used as the bottom cutting blade, the second piece used as the top cutting blade and the third piece was the leftover from the file. As for the title… if you bothered to read the video description, the title would make sense. Hope this helps and have a nice day.
