If you want to push the limits of realism for your wire model trees, this video might be your answer. I've show how-to build this highly detailed wire tree using some easy techniques. Needless to say that I am really proud to show it off! If you want to see how I made a bunch of diffferent types of trees in batches, click here: • How to Make Attractive...
With a little patience and some out of the box thinking, you can build a truly fine scale tree that looks real even when you zoom in three times and then watch it in 4K! If that sounds like fantasy, then keep watching. :)
This particular tree is made as a medium size tree in HO scale which can pass as a large tree in N Scale (The leaves might create some issues in smaller scales of course).
To build this tree you need:
1. A bunch of florist wire
2. Some multi strand electrical wire - thicker the better
3. Some poly fiber
4. Spray paint and matte acrylic paint
5. An airbrush will help a long way but is not really necessary
6. Some dried leaves
7. Noch leaves of various colours
8. Some patience. :)
That's it, you're on your way to make a model tree that you can show off with pride!
By the way check out this channel by master model maker Vikas Chander who inspired me a great deal in building fine scale trees and be a better model maker as a whole: / @vikasch1000

Wonderfully done. My suggestion: applying polyfiber through the static grass applicator as the fibers land perpendicular to the surface of the wire. Tried this making cypress trees and it came out really well. All I had to do was give it a blow of air from bottom to top and let dry. Apply finely ground foam (earth colour) for old growth and a layer of green finely ground foam. Looks rather cool.
@TrainsandDioramas
@TrainsandDioramas 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, that's what I thought at first as well, but since the poly fiber I used are taken from my dog's chew toy, they were very twisted! So much so that I couldn't get a better flow through my static grass applicator. 🙄 May be I should build a new one with a larger mesh just for this purpose. Thanks again for looking. Cheers!

Thank you Norman - that means a lot! Yeah, the idea was to build a tree that looks 'really real', so I was not really trying to take the easy route! However, as I went through the process I realized, it's not as difficult as I initially thought it would be, especially since I am not making a lot of them. The effort seems justified when I look at the end result. Taking it out in daylight and photographing it is a real treat.

Yeah, both the techniques, finer wire and the shredded microfiber to make twigs and stems were experimental, but after seeing the results, I think I'll stick to it for my foreground trees. The shredded microfiber piece is good way to bring balance in time and effort after all that wire twisting. Have to admit, it's VERY boring to twist all that wire!

I am really glad that it helped! There are other leaves depending on what is avilable near you.

A superbly produced video and a great tree. I was with you all the way until you added the finest wire and then I thought you are insane LOL Take that in the good humour it was meant. You truly have the patience of a saint! Then you surprised me with the addition of the fibres. From then on, everything was pretty much as I expected and the result was predictably superb. However, therein lays the problem. Unless these trees are kept in glass cases or hermetically sealed rooms, they are the most powerful magnets for dust and at times, cobwebs and keeping them clean is a nightmare. They don't stand up well against accidental knocks, or indeed playful cats, either. So, do you have any tips on how to clean them? I myself prefer to make 'indestructible trees' which look realistic, but can be jet washed with a water-loaded airbrush or even vacuum-cleaned without any damage whatsoever. Yes, I sacrifice the super-realism that you can achieve, but not by much. The only downside of my method is the fumes from the CA glue! They are not trees for making indoors. B.

Yes, I am a bit of a nut case when it comes to details, but these trees are not as fragile as they look - the beauty of making trees using wires. What you said is right if you’re making seafoam trees. For these trees, you might lose some foliage to the vacuum (and you can always attribute that to the season!) and might need some leaf refill once in a while, but other than that, these trees are hardly enough. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers! Kaustav

Great work. Aplain background instead of paste jars and tools would make the viewing better for us viewers. In other words, please keep unnecessary clutter out of your camera shot. The shot while airbrushing is perfect.

Great vid - thanks. I had sculpted the main parts of my first tree with Milliput but this wire/crackle paint approach is very effective.
@TrainsandDioramas
@TrainsandDioramas 3 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped. Milliput or even sculpting clay will work fine, however if you ever want to use reshape your branches, then you might not be able to. I use a more malleable acrylic modeling paste used by artists as the base, alternatively Woodland Scenics Latex Rubber is also a good option. If you've enjoyed this video, then take a look at this, with some newer techiques: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbuVY5amqq-7dKc.html Thanks for stopping by. Cheers! Kaustav

What is your paint to water ratio when using the emulsion pain for dipping your tree? Does it cover the wires well or do you have to use latex rubber or putty?
@TrainsandDioramas
@TrainsandDioramas 3 жыл бұрын
The emulsion paint works like a primer - I use roughly 50-60% diluted paint for florist wire. The ratio will depend on the type of wire you use. You need the paint to be fluid enough for florist wires that already has a thin coat of paper. On bare metal wires, you need relatively thicker paint since otherwise it won't 'stick' - I always recomend a few test run. And yes, once the paint 'binds' wires properly and preps the surface, I use a scuplting material to sculpt the trunk and the bark - Latex Rubber or Acrylic Sculpting paste. Here is a recent tree that I built which is a variation of this method where I use the acrylic sculpting clay directly on the florist wire, and the results were pretty encouraging - especially if you want to retain the ability to twist your wires /branches: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbuVY5amqq-7dKc.html Hope this helps. This is the most over engineered scale tree I’ve ever seen!! I guess that’s why it’s the best scale tree I’ve ever seen. Me: that’s a nice tree, would look awesome in my diorama. How much would you take? T&D: (sounds of pencil scratching) mumbling mumbling mumbling .. that’d be Four Hundred and seventy three dollars plus shipping.

Haha! Yes, this tree was meant to be over engineered! But I can tell you it really is not that difficult once you're in the flow. Wire trees are possibly the only way to get these type of details in a tree. I am now hooked to making detailed wire trees after building a couple of these highly detailed ones.

Trains and Dioramas true. I prefer wire trees but have never went this far. I’m doing a small dio with a tree on a burm so it is a focal point even tho it’s not. Plan on using full method you illustrated. Thanks

Lovely! Keep me posted about how it works out for you. As you might have seen, my next video will be about making a lot of trees so I'm also trying to find shortcuts to my own methods. From my experience so fars I'd recommend that you use the 'shredded poly fiber' method more than those individual copper wire twigs. It's actually fast and easy, and the effect is very natural. I am using that technique full on for all my trees now. Cheers! Kaustav
