This is a tutorial on ow to make a 19th century animation device called a phenakistoscope.
It was invented in 1851 by Joseph Plateau and it is sometimes referred to as a magic disc.
This is because it is a circular disc with a series of drawings and slotss in it.
When you hold it up to a mirror, spin the disc and look through the slots the drawings
turn into an animation. Simple and fun little animation device.
In this tutorial I show you how it works and how to make one. I also have a template packet for this
so you can download it, print it and make it yourself with just a few very basic supplies. In the
packet I also give you three animation discs and a blank disc so you can make your own animation.
Want to hop directly to the animation to see what it looks like spinning? Go to 1:23 in the video.
The template is on my website here:

Clever! You can use the same idea with with the slots and animation sitting on the inside of a well lit drum, you look through the outside when it's moving.

That's super cool, kind of like how people at school would steal pads of sticky notes and the make animations with it.

i wonder if the inventor knew that your eyes are not been block and expose to each frame, rather each frame is been drawn out by the slit using parallax. just knowing the basic concept other inventions can be made.

I'm browsing the web from foamboard in and find a lot of difrent sizes. What do you use for a standard? Most importantly thickness.

epicfantasy Thanks a bunch. That seems to be standard thickness, but I see there is also 3mm and 10mm easily avalible. I know there isn't any real right or wrong, but I thought I'd check first. I've finaly found a place in Sweden, Stockholm that sells foamboard and I'll try to get hold of a coupple of sheets as soon as possible. It drives me mad watching all this stuff not being able to do any myself.
