Teet and Taavi, from HUUM, picked some birch branches and made a couple of sauna whisks. Taavi made a whisk with a rope, and Teet made it in an old-fashioned way - with a birch branch.

They are generally harvested before midsummer -- how long do they last for? Does this mean you often don't have whisks in winter?

Hi! Good question! We actually preserve the sauna whisks for the winter. To preserve them, you can either dry or freeze them. For drying, hang the whisks in a well-ventilated, dry area away from direct sunlight until completely dry. This method allows them to last several months.

If you don't have a well-ventilated room to air-dry sauna whisks, you can try this: - Shake off excess water from the whisk to remove as much moisture as possible. - Wrap the whisk in newspaper to absorb moisture. Change the newspaper once it gets damp. - Place the wrapped whisk in a warm, dry area of your home, away from direct heat or sunlight. Near a radiator or in a dry room works well. - Unwrap and air out the whisk occasionally to prevent mold and ensure even drying.

For freezing, let the whisks dry for a day or two to remove excess moisture, then place them in a plastic bag and freeze. Frozen whisks can last throughout the winter and can be thawed before use to enjoy a fresh, aromatic sauna experience even in the coldest months.

To use preserved sauna whisks in winter, if frozen, simply thaw them at room temperature or in lukewarm water until flexible. For dried whisks, soak them in warm water for a few hours to rehydrate and regain flexibility. Once prepared, they're ready to enhance your sauna experience with their natural aroma and gentle touch :)

@@huumsauna thank you for such a thorough answer! Are whisks single-use items?
